View Full Version : Sugestions; Goods Train unit
Smoking mirror May 29, 2004, 06:18 AM I want a unit to use as a treasure unit for a WWII scenario, like the trade units from the new world conquest. Its going to be a steam train with a single goods wagon probably, only modeled the engine so far, no textures yet, any sugestions? I don't usualy make units by commitie but I'm not sure of how to procede with this unit.
It will be created by a unit creating improvement, based next to a resource such as iron or bauxite or urainium. The unit have to be escorted back to the capital for an exchange of victory points. This will represent the build up of war materials during the war.
Heres the unit so far;

Wyrmshadow May 29, 2004, 09:11 AM I've got ooodles of train models if need be.

Yeah, it'd be usefull for representing some of the key commando raids of WWII such as the cassandra crossing where germany atempted to move thier "heavy water" back to germany from norway. Its a key ingredient in the production of nuclear weapons.
In the scenario I'm planning the end will come in 1990 with the end of the cold war. so during WWII gathering war materials and such will be a big part of the victory strategy, when the war ends (with the invention of nuclear weapons) the war materials improvements will become obsolete, they will have to be replaced with more up to date, peacefull materials production. Theres no point in winning a military victory in the hot war of 1939-1945 if you finish the war with no working industry or ecconomy to wage the cold war with.
Camber Jun 01, 2004, 09:37 PM Thank you for making this request, I've also been interested in a train unit, and had switched my approach to using it as a treasure unit also. My suggestion would be to make it era-specific, so that in the modern age it would turn to a diesel engine. My reasoning is that it would be pointless to have it upgradeable (AI probably wouldn't do it), and even if it was upgradeable, your industrial-era buildings would still be producing the old models during the Modern era.
Smoking Mirror, do you know whether the AI will use self-mobile treasure units?
Smoking mirror Jun 02, 2004, 11:01 AM I'm not sure realy, I've not tested treasure units properly. I also don't know if its possible to make it era specific, as far as I know only the worker, leader and settler can be era specific.
Wrymshadow, would you be able to make a train unit with one of your models? it would take you much less time than me as I'd still have to finish the unit and do all the textures. It only needs a default, a run (optional), a fidget/captureand a death.
If you don't I will eventualy...
Wyrmshadow Jun 02, 2004, 11:05 AM I might do it as a side project... I'll PM you with what I have.
Unexisted Jun 02, 2004, 12:33 PM Very good train. But maybe I'll use it for another concept. Such as a land transport. It can hold 20-50 units? And travel around 5 moves per turn (regular terrain.)
But it would need a defense? Or do the loaded soldiers battle?
W.i.n.t.e.r Jun 02, 2004, 12:36 PM then you should get rid of rails altogether...- and the AI will never load ground units onto ground units- besides- loose a train and you loose 20-50 units

All units can be assigned era specific animations, there is a thread about it in Tutorials forum, IIRC :)
Camber Jun 02, 2004, 03:28 PM then you should get rid of rails altogether.... That would be my dream. Land transports is near the top of my request list for C4 features.

That would be a very sad turn for the player
But, the attack could be the (gishi?) -the guy who controsl the the train. Comes out with a gun? :)
NateDawgNY Jun 02, 2004, 11:17 PM I definitely like the concept. I'm looking forward to being able to implement it once created.
Smoking mirror Jun 03, 2004, 11:09 AM Oooh.. I'll have to have a look at that era specific tutorial, I've got a personal flavour mod which is almost perfect but needs era specific knights in the industrial era (sort of a heavy dragoon).
gorn Jun 03, 2004, 11:28 AM Casey Jones, you better watch your speed. I'd like a Casey Jones unit to get out of the train!
