View Full Version : New nasty IE-hole
KaeptnOvi Jun 09, 2004, 03:08 AM a new IE-Hole allows a website to write a exe-file to the local disk. It's even possible to replace a welll known exe (like mplayer) and then by suppling a media-file start the new file. As to now there is no patch for this hole (except using an alternative browser ;) )
a german description and demo of the bug can be found here:

Hakim Jun 09, 2004, 09:17 AM :hmm: ZA sometimes report Explorer to be a "Changed Program" when it want to access the Internet. Same with other common programs...
stormbind Jun 09, 2004, 10:08 AM I fell victim to that months ago. I didn't know it wasn't public knowledge :(

Plexus Jun 09, 2004, 04:49 PM I'm lost as to why anyone would still use IE as their main browser.
Dell19 Jun 09, 2004, 04:57 PM Because its what windows comes with...
Plexus Jun 09, 2004, 05:19 PM Well, make that anyone remotely computer savvy.
Dell19 Jun 09, 2004, 05:27 PM One reason is that I am lazy and can't really be bothered to move my list of favourite sites... and IE works fine for browsing...

That and the fact that I live with tech dead parents who would not understand what a browser is.

You could easily install another browser and use it whilst your parents use another...
Thrawn Jun 09, 2004, 09:23 PM I only use IE when I have to. All the rest of the time, I use Firefox. So much better than IE.
@Dell: I believe Opera has an option to import IE bookmarks. Just export it from IE, and then import in opera. Dunno how well it works though.

Firefox automatically imports your IE favorites when you install it. It stuffs them into the "Imported IE Favorites" folder in the bookmarks.
Dell19 Jun 10, 2004, 04:54 AM Well if IE ever stops working I might try it then...
Rheinmetall Jun 10, 2004, 06:28 AM Well this doesn't concern me because I don't use IE. Now why would anyone be using IE anyhow.
Dell19 Jun 10, 2004, 07:32 AM Well this doesn't concern me because I don't use IE. Now why would anyone be using IE anyhow.
Because it comes as standard and it works in general...

Firefox at least has this option.

Mostly I use Opera, but sometimes a web site won't work with Opera and I have to use IE.

Exactly. I still find myself having to use ie when something doesn't work quite how it should.
