How did the USA ever get to be above England? The FIFA Ranking is at the advantage of weaker zones such as CONCACAF, AFC or OFC. Indeed, the US or Australia wins more games since they play mostly against Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago or Fiji (for Australia).
The US aren't that bad in football. They are above Mexico... which is an average nation. I would consider America to be at about the same level than Belgium.

Somehow Turkey have managed to move up to joint fifth after managing to impressively lose to Latvia and failing to qualify for Euro 2004...

Mexico being 4th is necessarily a mistake. I'm less scared of Mexico than I am from Denmark (Well okay... Denmark has beaten us at the world cup so I might be biased :()

Anyway, I hate France being 2nd too. I don't want my team to be overestimated and then lose pathetically at the Euro. France should be 181th. This way, they would be even more motivated to prove their value and win the Euro !

In a nutshell, then, FIFA rankings are worthless :)

Thanks

Mexico at #4 is a mistake, but I don't care what team you have, playing at 120.000 seat Azteca will scare anybody, especially after the most recent riot. :D

Oh and FIFA rankings sucking is not a new thing.

The only measure of success that matters is trophies.

Correct. Though reaching a final or semifinal can also be a success. Being on some FIFA list or winning a friendly certainly cam't.

Iran are 19th... How exactly do they calculate these rankings?

They pull them out of a hat, I think.

Dell19
Jun 09, 2004, 05:18 PM
Then why do they always get the first team right? Do they have a discussion on who should be first and then put the rest into the hat?

phoenix_night
Jun 09, 2004, 05:21 PM
Um, yes, they do the first three, but then realise they don't know enough about football to judge the rest...So the hat it is!

Anyone want to attempt to create a system for how they would rank teams fairly? First of all I would probably discount friendlies, award points for winning games, if you win against stronger opposition (a team with a higher rank) you get more points. If you win a competition then the competition's value is calculated from the rankings of the teams that take part in it.

Hitro

The only way to rate them quite fairly is to use only competition results and nothing else. With the results for older competitions being reduced over the years.

But even that would be problematic, for instance, how would you value the Copa America compared with the European Championships?

By giving the competition a value based on the rankings of the sides competing. A bit of a circular arguement but it might just work since the WC should still end up as the competition with the highest value as the most teams compete in it.

Hitro

But as the World Cup would then set the rankings the values of the continential championships would be quite set by the number of starters they have in the WC.

I think rankings are pointless, they simply ignore one basic thing that makes football attractive, and that is the fact that not always the supposed "best" team wins.

Dell19

I guess FIFA use such an odd system so that they can justify having many teams from many different continents that wouldn't necessarily get into a WC if it was based solely on rankings that were actually accurate.

I reckon they should get x number of supporters from every country put them in a pub with an unlimited supply of beer and ask them to come up with a list of the top 200 countries, obviously they would be allowed to have an atlas.

Dell is suggesting a ladder system, I think. Since the US & Mexico starts lower than Spain & Italy, it doesn't matter how many times Mexico beats the US, they won't climb the ladder unless they beat someone rated higher than themselves... like Columbia.

Pretty much although they would still get some points for beating someone will a lower ranking, just less points...
