View Full Version : A very very odd thing just happened MarineCorps Jun 09, 2004, 07:51 PM As can be seen I do not have MSN running. I also unistalled windows messengera week ago. What is going on here?   Amenhotep7 Jun 09, 2004, 08:22 PM :hmm: What the hell is that conversation? Are you being difficult, MarineCorps?;) FireBall Jun 09, 2004, 09:21 PM Oh yes, that... I used to have the problem too, that WIndows Messanger was automatically laucnhing at startup and logging in via my MSN passport. Forget how to kill it now though :(. stormbind Jun 10, 2004, 06:16 AM Yeah, but MarineCorps is not logged on (see systray icon)! How did the message come to his console? Dell19 Jun 10, 2004, 07:36 AM That might be one version of messenger whils he actually has another version running as well which he is signed in with... MarineCorps Jun 10, 2004, 02:01 PM :hmm: What the hell is that conversation? Are you being difficult, MarineCorps?;) Good Q. I have no idea what was going on with that. He just said FINE!. @dell: Nope I expanded the tray and WM was not running. If it helps at all I unistalled it from the add remove programs thing, Hakim Jun 10, 2004, 02:12 PM That's the Windows Update icon in the tray, are you installing something? IIRC it's only visible when installing or downloading and it can't be the latter since you're offline. BTW, MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger are different programs. MarineCorps Jun 10, 2004, 02:34 PM Yeah. I know they are two different programs. Windows update thing always appears when ever I turn on the computer. Never bother to look at it. stormbind Jun 10, 2004, 03:05 PM My hypothesis is that MC was connected to MSN, and that message arrived just before disconnecting. Would MSN add a line to the message window saying it had been disconnected? (I don't use that software: see http://www.jabber.org) MarineCorps Jun 10, 2004, 04:28 PM Nope hadn't been on for several hours. MarineCorps Jun 10, 2004, 10:17 PM DAMN YOU M$! :amd: Aperently removing windows exploer from the add remove panel does nothing besides not allow you to open it from the start menu:rolleyes: I found a thing in the usefull threads thread about removing it. Hopefully it is gone now. ainwood Jun 10, 2004, 11:26 PM It may even have been invoked by the buffer-overrun security hole. I suggest you visit windows update and download the security patches. :) nonconformist Jun 11, 2004, 07:54 AM MC, out of interest, why are you getting rid of messenger? Dell19 Jun 11, 2004, 08:39 AM He might be trying to use trillian instead... nonconformist Jun 11, 2004, 09:35 AM Is that the one that stands in forr all IM programmes? Dell19 Jun 11, 2004, 10:21 AM Yep... Btw did you make sure to actually exit MSN messenger completely before uninstalling it rather than just logging out as that might cause problems... LordKestrel Jun 11, 2004, 10:39 AM You may want to take a look at gaim as well. It hasn't been plagued by the security holes that trillian has, and it's truely free (gpl license and all that). It lets you do all the standard things as well, such as chat on multiple services, transparancy, minimize to tray, tabbed chats, all the normal features. http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ MarineCorps Jun 11, 2004, 11:14 AM MC, out of interest, why are you getting rid of messenger? I unistalled Windows messanger. Not MSN. @ainwood: buffer-overrun security hole...? And as to the patches, I am on 56k. :( |
