Field (not feild ;) ) Hockey is a no-contact sport. That's a big difference.

About the technics of handling a stick and ball:
A field-hockey stick has only one side that may be used: the left side. All field hockey players thus have the stick to their right. If the ball is to your left, you simply need to twist the stick and use the short end upside down: not easy.

Your left hand always is at the end of the stick and always holds firm. The right hand is free. when controlling a ball, it is in the middle and not holding firm. When hitting the ball, it is near the left hand, and holding firm. In ice-hockey, it is common to keep your hands far from each other at any time.
