View Full Version : Best way to deal with a hacker
Smash Jun 12, 2004, 01:05 PM Lets assume we're all safe and the hacker has failed.
We are aware of the attempt and have IPs logged.
What can we do?
What should we do?
Knight-Dragon Jun 12, 2004, 01:09 PM Report them to the authorities?
stormbind Jun 12, 2004, 01:12 PM Inform their ISP immediately. The IP address you have may be a middle (compromised) computer and the ISP can contact the owner to let them know so they can improve their security. You need the IP address, the time of the attack (because IPs change), and the type of attack.
Normal ISP policy: 3 to 5 seperate complaints = banned.
Smash Jun 12, 2004, 02:27 PM How do I know what/who their ISP is?
How bout some of things I could do rather than should?...though I much prefer the things I should do.
muppet Jun 12, 2004, 03:13 PM Hey Smash.
Didn't you use to live on the other side of Canada?
What you doing in Vancouver?
Smash Jun 12, 2004, 03:17 PM I've always lived here
stormbind Jun 12, 2004, 04:08 PM You check with a WHOIS database to see which ISP owns the IP address. No database has all IP addresses so you may need to hunt around :(
This is the one I use, but only because it covers IP addresses in my area.

Smash Jun 12, 2004, 08:03 PM Thanks.Thats good to know.
I found it is coming from RoadRunner in Virginia.
Its kinda funny actually as what I am being "attacked" with is Newtear. This is a nuke from 1998 or so.It won't work on anything thses days.
I figure some kid got the Junior Hacker Kit from E-Bay or something  .I'd like to put a spook into him/her
FireBall Jun 12, 2004, 08:45 PM Well, you could always try a nice little Net Send, though it likely won't work, I've done it before when I nboticed someone trying to get through my router, sent them a little joke... The lighthouse one.. :D
Net Send:
Go to Command Prompt (MS DOS window)
Type in net send (IP Address) (message)
Press Enter, wait
If it works, your prompt will tell you 'message recieved', if not, it'll give you an error.
crystal Jun 13, 2004, 12:46 PM I'm a hacker to some extent but I don't attempt to compromise people's computers. You know, hacker and cracker are two different concepts.
shadowdude Jun 13, 2004, 12:58 PM You know, hacker and cracker are two different concepts. What does a "cracker" do?
Perfection Jun 13, 2004, 01:17 PM What does a "cracker" do?
 Crackers are the internet vandals, they're the ones who break into websites and do naughty stuff.
Plexus Jun 13, 2004, 03:50 PM Cracka!
stormbind Jun 13, 2004, 03:55 PM What does a "cracker" do?
All crackers are hackers, but not all hackers are crackers. Crackers break the law :p
Smash Jun 14, 2004, 04:21 PM Let me just check this
I type in Net Send with a space between the 2 words. Then a space and the ip# in brackets. Then a space and the message in brackets
That right?
KaeptnOvi Jun 15, 2004, 12:54 AM actually, most likely it wasn't even a cracker but just a stupid script kiddie. damn them.

No, it's
net send IP message
No brackets....
Ballazic Jun 15, 2004, 09:55 PM Crackers should be arrested.
funxus Jun 16, 2004, 05:53 AM What program is it that receives and displays the message sent on the receiving computer? When I try to send a message to the comps in my network, it says it has the wrong message alias, which probably means that the computer doesn't accept the incoming message.
