View Full Version : Best size for micro-flag
stormbind Jun 16, 2004, 07:00 AM Hi all,
I have problems. The US flag doesn't like being scaled down - there is too much detail and it turns into a blurred blob.
Can anyone do a micro US flag? I was aiming for about 15px high.
Perhaps it would be better to make something that looks like the flag but isn't technically correct? Any suggestions? :(
Gogf Jun 16, 2004, 08:56 AM I'll try. If I can't get it, then perhaps using an incorrect number of stars/stripes would be the sollution.
EDIT: Here is a normal 15px (I'm working on an unaccurate one now):
Gogf Jun 16, 2004, 09:10 AM Okay, and here is the altered version:
stormbind Jun 16, 2004, 09:12 AM The first is a similar result to mine.
The best looking image I had was with the stripes showing white at the top, and blending to all-red at the bottom. Although it looked nice, it would be exceedingly hard to make all flags follow the same theme (uniform effect) :(
Maybe there's another way? Lots of sites have UK/US (ordering) or US flag for English-language... but when you need ideas, such sites go into hiding... it's sod's law :p
The second.. with 3 stars?
That's a different flag. I don't know if any nation uses stripes and 3 stars, but there are definately others like stripes + 1 star etc.
Sadly, I discarded most of my attempts so I cannot show what I tried, but here's one I found floating around in My Documents :p
I think it's actually 13px high.
Gogf Jun 16, 2004, 09:26 AM Well, at least sharpen the image..
I don't think anyone uses three stars, and IMO it looks better than just blue.
stormbind Jun 16, 2004, 09:32 AM That was sharpened :undecide:
The colours are the similar at the bottom in an attempt to disguise the disproportional bars (some are thicker than others).
Here's another attempt at hiding the errors.
stormbind Jun 16, 2004, 09:40 AM Or going the other way. This one hasn't enough light though :(
Gogf Jun 16, 2004, 10:10 AM Well, it's impossible with something 15 pixels high to even have one dot-per-star because you can't have a dot smaller than a pixel.
stormbind Jun 16, 2004, 10:22 AM At a distance, the stars become a pattern (which looks mono-colour). That's why the ones I did don't have any stars.
Blue background: #081873
Average of white + blue: #2C3A87
This is with a pattern, but it's not accurate.
Gogf Jun 16, 2004, 10:33 AM Well, it just seems odd to not have stars.
stormbind Jun 16, 2004, 10:35 AM Edited ;)
I still think it's far from optimal though :(
Gogf Jun 16, 2004, 11:46 AM Wow, that is very nice. Now just let me take at shot at editing it ;).
Gogf Jun 16, 2004, 11:50 AM Here is a slightly sharper version:
Souron Jun 16, 2004, 12:48 PM My attempt: 13x26
