View Full Version : 2004 CFC Fantasy Football League (NFL) Thread
El Justo Jun 17, 2004, 09:16 AM I open this thread with the intention of probing the interest of an official ;) Civilization Fanatics Center fantasy football league for the 2004 season.
There would be no $$ involved. It would simply be for bragging rights and the opportunity to talk some smack and get hyped for the best sport on this planet!! (Sorry :hatsoff: to our European friends!)
I could arrange to set up a free league with a website that could host such a league. I have 10 yrs of commissioner's experience w/ my own big-time league that I run.
A draft could be done on-line and everything would be completely formatted.
What do you say? Have you got the skillz to win it all and be crowned the CFC Fantasy Football champion?

well, if you're familiar w/ how fantasy football works then here's a snapshot:
all teams in the league would have around 15 or 16 players on their team.
~2 QBs 2 Kickers
~4 RBs 2 Defenses (entire team defense)
~4 WRs
~2 TEs
Of those players, each team would start/activate each of the following for each week of the NFL season:
1 QB ~~ 2 RBs ~~ 2 WRs ~~ 1 TE ~~ 1 Kicker ~~ 1 Defense
Points are accumulated (or subtracted for fumbles lost, interceptions thrown, field goals missed) by each player for the following statistical catergories (if applicable):
~Touchdowns scored
~Total yards passing
~Total yards rushing
~Total yards receiving
~Feild Goals & extra points
~turnovers forced; ie interceptions and fumble recoveries (all by defense)
a schedule would be drawn up (assigned by most websites that host a league) pitting each of the teams in the Civ Fanatics Center FFL against each other; each team in the league would play each of the other teams at least once during the yr (depending on how many teams we would get to join). Thus, each team would accumulate a Win/Loss record and standings would be kept. In order to record a Win, your team would have to score more pts in that given week than your opponent. Simple enough, eh? Standings would be kept recording all wins and losses, etc. A playoff bracket would be set for the last few weeks to determine the Champion.

TE = Tight End; a sort of offensive lineman and wide receiver hybrid who makes a few catches a game.
RB = Running Back; takes handoffs, runs and catches the football and scores the majority of his touchdowns on the ground. Also the most valuable of all fantasy football positions.

any website we'd use ALWAYS has a 'cheat sheet' type list where they rank each player at all of the positions. this is an indespensible tool for any fantasy football mgr.

to everyone interested in the CFC Fantasy Football League:
the NFL season starts around the last weekend of Aug/first weekend of Sept so we would try and set up the on-line draft some time during aug. the trick would be to have everyone agree on a time and day. the exact day and time is specified by the host site. the earlier we sign up, the more time slots that we'll have to choose from.

working with a money/salary cap could be a little advanced for our purposes though it is done in many leagues. choosing whomever you'd like kinda defeats the purpose of the draft. anyhow, there's only one peyton manning, randy moss and clinton portis to go around :p
the draft is all about strategy...that is, making the right pick at the right time and 'building' your team, one pick at a time.

Now that Kurt Warner is finally gone, Marshall's going to have a huge year.
They don't feel compelled to put the ball in the air 40+ times a game, just give it to Marshall and let him run roughshod like he used to do. Oh, those were the days....

I think a fantasy league should have a maximum of 16 teams. That way, everybody has an actual starting quarterback as their backup.

i would agree that 16 is probably the max. we could always set up another league if we get more interst. after all, it's free!

It's really not that complicated. All you really do is pick your players, then trade around. When the season starts you find out how good your team is.
Will we use CFC PM's to discuss trades, or should we spread around AIM names?

the website that we'd use would be designed for trades, rosters and anything else fantasy football.
for anyone out there who may not have the NFL knowledge they think they need to win, let me know...there are a TON of free websites i know of out there that can familiarize you w/ the top players (and the bottom ones for that matter).

I just don't want to be stuck having to manage more than 4 teams this year. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to juggle that many teams in multiple leagues.
And i certainly don't want to have a "dead" team as I hate those types of teams in my other leagues. :)

the only reason we'd have more than one league is to accomodate all of those who would want in. this doesn't mean everyone would have to join 2 leagues. one league could be 12 or 16 teams while the other could be 8 or whatever. it depends on the #s

i'm figuring we can use yahoo.com for the league host site but they haven't started up with the sign-ups yet. soon though. prolly a week or 2.
we should try and keep the teams at an even # like 8/10/10, etc so the schedule isn't all out of whack.
also, there may be 2 different leagues for the CFC dudes so anyone interested in joing both (in the event that we need to fill spots in the 2nd one) should say so. i'll do both if i have to. who cares? it's all free.

:lol: Oh, it's so brother. It really wasn't that bad. Towards the end of the season I slipped up a couple of times but only on accident. I swear. :mischief:
I'm sure they have fancy sites that can do it for you but I was too lazy to find one. We had a 'mom & pop' type of thing going.

fyi to all interested in FF for this yr:
yahoo.com will be the host site for us this yr. they have just launched the new season and FREE commish program, etc. we need to determine how many teams we want in each league. according to yahoo, they can host up to 20 teams/league. that's seems a little too much to me. 12 teams is perfect if you ask me.
who had the last head-count anyway?
speak up now b/c i will start to set everything up in the next few days. i believe i'll need email addresses so that you can receive the invitation through a link.

yes. this is true. however, in order to receive the invite, one must first supply their email address so as to receive the message/invite.
THEREFORE, for all of those interested, please post/PM your email to me so that i can put through your invite.
ALSO, [VERY IMPORTANT]...please specify an approximate time-scale (US eastern daylight time) that would be best for you to do the online draft.
for example, "anywhere from 6pm to 10 pm is good for me."
lastly, please note if there is any 'bad' days in late august for you. by this i mean that if you are going to be away or unbale to draft on a certain day.
once i receive all of the above-referenced info, i will set up the league on yahoo.com.

El justo, I will pm you my e-mail addy. Anytime is good for me to draft, cause if I cannot make it I will have my rankings preset for my liking, However, I am usually available at the same times you stated and also weekends.
As for league size, I really don't care I like bigger leagues because they present more of a challenge. I have run a 16 team keeper league for 14 years and did an 18 team league on Yahoo last year and it was pretty tough and fun. If you don't have all the teams in the same league, then there would be possibly 2 cfc champions instead of 1. But it really does not matter 1 way or the other to me.

IMO, they are more fun b/c my WR may have had a fantastic game, say 120 yds receiving on 8 catches but no TDs, thus no fantasy pts :mad: . yet, in basic leagues (TD scoring only), a scrub RB who gets only 2 or 3 carries a game and scores from 1 yd out gets more pts than my guy who went nuts (120 yds receiving, 8 catches but no TDs) :sad:
therefore, i am strongly in favor of the 'Scoring & Yardage' format and it's not more research time. just more in-depth as far as the stats/scroring is concerned.

I agree. This way basic scoring studs (like goal-line backs) still help your team and are viable starters, but they should not be outproducing guys who rush for 125 yards and no TDs....

i suppose...try setting up one of those 'preference' lists first. i'll have to check to see if the website is set up so that i can physically draft your players for you. if i can't, then it'll work directly from the preference list.

OneFastWarrior Jul 17, 2004, 01:48 PM sounds good, thats how I run my 16 team league. How many bench players? 6, 8, more? If we have 8 then you would have 1 backup for each starting position. If you have 6, then you could have 1 backup for each position, (only 1 WR and 1 RB backup instead of 2). Of course bench players are at tyhe discretion of each team owner. and I only keep 14 player rosters, but if you go more than 16 rounds it kinda gets down to some real nobody players.

that's kind of neat. 16 teams sort of stretches the talent pool some but i'd be willing to try that if everyone is of the same sentiment. ;)

That sounds good, as for the backups, i think what you said is good but possibly a spot for a backup defense so that you can have one for a bye week or if they just suck.

I think you need to allow people to have at least one backup for each mandatory starting position, so (theoretically) if someone wanted to draft their team at the outset, they could play the season with what they draft.
We all know this never happens and transactions need to be made, but the theory is sound. Someone might get lucky and get everyone they want initially :)
Besides, I think Yahoo makes backups position-less.. if you want to keep seven QBs as backups, feel free.. you're really out of luck on bye weeks though.
So with nine starting positions, I think having a bench of seven players (at least 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE, 1 DF, 1 PK and then an extra bench spot) gives us 16 man rosters.
16 teams means that everyone can have two NFL starters at every position if it breaks down evenly, and I think that's all you can ask for at the outset.

Actually, I looked at the league settings and you have it set so that each team will have to start 2 QB's, 4 RB's, 4 WR's, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 DEF, and we also then have 5 bench spots. You really need to change this. If you look at your team page you will see what I mean. Before the draft it only shows your starting positions and at the top it says how many empty or available bench spots you have. You can not preset the bench spots for what people must have, omly the starting positions.

I think Fisher has realized that you can't be rigid in your offensive thinking. If you've got a great QB and some good WRs, then let them throw and catch, don't handicap them just because you believe the best way to win games is to run the ball down their throats, play defense and win 14-10.
And I hate Fisher. I think he's a punk. But you can't argue with success.

also, it appears that we can't break the 16 teams into conferences or divisions. instead, it's 1-16 w/ the top 8 making the playoffs (weeks 14, 15, 16).
also, we can arrange our own draft order or have the site randomly generate it for us. what are your thoughts on this?

not sure when the site would generate it. definitely by the 19th i'd assume.

Yes. I would like to talk to my scouting staff :) which consists of my cat and the neighbours dog :sad: so we can get our draft strategy nailed down. Knowing where the 'fish will be picking will be important in helping on us decide what we are going to be doing on D-Day.

that sounds reasonable enough. also, for those of you out there who don't know how the draft order works:
rd 1 (& all subsequent odd numbered rounds of the draft)
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-14-15-16
rd 2 (& all subsequent even numbered rds)
16-15-14-13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1
thus the 'snake' method of drafting. be advised the best spot to have is right smack dab in the middle b/c you won't have to wait a long-arse time to make picks. the no. 16 pick has back-to-back picks which ain't too bad.

with the draft only 9 days away, you still have us needing a starting lineup of 2 QB, 4RB, 4WR, 1TE,1K and 1 Def, with 5 bench spots. If you don't change this before the season, then it will really be sick when you will have to be starting 3rd and 4th string RB's and the likes of William Henderson in your starting lineup.
Please set a lineup, or tell us if this is what we have to deal with. I would like to do rankings for this league, or ??

El Justo Aug 10, 2004, 11:48 AM be advised that the draft order 'snakes' back and forth each round; ie the 1st rd goes 1-2-3, etc to 16 and then the 1st pick of the 2nd rd belongs to the team that holds the no. 16 pick (me actually).
to make it much simpler:
odd numbered rds are 1-16 and even numbered rds are 16 back down to 1.
i'll update our site as soon as i get a chance

alright then...i switched the league settings around to reflect the correct amount of starting players. as mentioned before, they are as follows:
1 QB 2 RBs 3 WRs 1 TE 1 K 1 Def/Sp Team
the remaining spots on our rosters will consist of bench players and their total amount will be 8 and can be applied to ANY position.
also, the website has a chat board we can use during the draft so we can talk our shiznit. btw, i can't tell what cfc user has which team b/c the names vary. it's confusing :confused:
