Never seen them do that before. :dubious: :wow: :twitch:

I presume AOL sold your screenname to the mortgage company.

Wouldn't suprise me in the least.

I just hears a report on the news about an AOL person who was fired for selling 92,000,000 screennames. I presume he was only fired once the press found out .

ICQ used to be famous for random adverts where there were set replies regardless of what you sent...

Good thing I don't use AIM. :D

IIRC it's just the AOL Instant Messanger included in the AOL internet browser, not the downloadable AIM.

That's SPIM, and yes, it's on the increase. That's why my main chat is locked out to people on my buddy list.

That's pretty old. It's known as spim. More annoying than spam because you often can't block it. I used to get those all the time a few years ago. "Hot 18/f/CA chicks that did stuff with their friends" often IM'd me. If they were hosted on Tripod, I took the liberty of reporting it to Tripod and shutting them down. :-/

Haven't gotten a lot of spim lately... used to get it at least once a day. I figure it's been a few months.

Sadly that is true. So I can't disalble it :( :gripe:

It's on everything. Anita Hamiliton was getting them on Yahoo. What would stop spimmers from spreading to MSN or ICQ? IRC is already infected with those adverts...bots that message you and then disappear.

On MSN you have to know someone's specific email address to add them to your list and they have to confirm that they want to add you so its not as easy to spam someone like it is/was on ICQ...

I think it is possible with MSN. I'd check but ah, I forgot my password :D

Can some moderator change this topic name? It took me five minutes to understand what this was about...I thought this was some sort of joke. Something like "New from spam!"

Oops. I type to fast :D

Did you report them to AOL, MC? That's a violation of the ToS, and can get them banned.

SPIM, haha nice name. It's been around for years, and can get very annoying. It's one of the reasosn I gave up ICQ (not really though; I gave up ICQ mainly because they kept adding useless features and ads).

I don't bother reporting anything to aol. They don't do anything and just send you an e mail saying that there is nothing they can do and they value me as a customer. Most of the time I get SPIM it comes from outside of aol anyways.

One of my few pleasures in life is hitting that 'report spam' button....

Why do you have to report spam?

Turner
Jun 26, 2004, 06:51 AM
Partially to improve the spam filters, and partially to 'tell on' people.

Snitch? Me?

Oh sorry I thought I was reading site feedback so I wondered why a mod had to report posts...

I don't bother reporting spam with hotmail as I have alread blocked the maxium # of domains.
