View Full Version : Scenario Development: D-Day
citizen001 Jun 24, 2004, 01:56 AM I am in the process of creating a D-Day scenario AFTER the allies have landed on Normandy beach but with only a small foothold. I am making everything from scratch a have even made my own map (although accuracy is a bit of a problem). i have finished placing the cities on the map and added the units, but tech tree needs fixing. if any of you have any suggestions, or are interested, please post them here. i don't know how to post screenshots yet, but once i do, there will be plenty.
Unlike other D-Day or WWII scenarios, this one isn't going to be massive, about 100x100 map with about 4000 units. load time won't be a problem as it's going to be under a minute on a 800mhz, so yeh.

Sarevok Jun 24, 2004, 02:46 AM Interesting... though I think the map should cover a larger scale.
citizen001 Jun 24, 2004, 02:50 AM yeh, although that would take heaps more time and load times would skyrocket as this map already has over 100 cities.
El Justo Jun 24, 2004, 07:36 AM good idea for a scenario. watching Band of Brothers over and over had me thinking about something just like this...4000 preplaced units?
i'll keep an eye out for this one
Amenhotep7 Jun 24, 2004, 07:53 AM May want to cut back on pre-placed units. But otherwise, Looks real good!:goodjob:
Daniel Khan Jun 24, 2004, 10:01 AM Awesome looking! Can't wait for it to be done!

The landings took part on a larger part. If you want to mimic the actual landings, your map is too small.

I couldn't disagree more. There are too many mods out now which are too big to play. I was thinking if anything this should be smaller to represent the action at a single beach as we don't need the whole theatre on one map but this should be okay if there aren't too many preplaced units. You could even make sequels.
Citizen, you need to add some custom units. You can get excellent Panzer IIIs and IVs from cd group website. Also, you need to add immobile machinegun emplacements on the fortifications or the dumb Ai will just vacate them on its first move and give up its positions for no reason. Just add a new unit using the same machinegun unit with a new name and flag 'immobile' & 'zone of control' then preplace on the forts.
Al Zan Jun 24, 2004, 12:16 PM that's alot of detail. i said cut it down a bit to make the gameplay go faster.
Gogf Jun 24, 2004, 01:04 PM Very interesting! I will follow this with interest!
citizen001 Jun 25, 2004, 03:23 AM about the too many units thing, don't worry, the load time is less than a minute on slow computers (like mine). and yeh there are many mods and scenarios out there with massive maps of Europe and all that stuff, mine just focuses on the liberation of part of France with really heavy and intense resistance on the part of the Germans so the game won't be a quick and easy victory for either side.
at this stage i've finished the bulk of the scenario, maps, units and placing, i just have to do the tech tree and civilopedia which will take quite a while. with the tech tree, i think it's pointless having one as you can't research any major technologies in a matter of days or weeks, but ill add some techs to represent the unit upgrades during the time with the Panzers and other stuff. The map needs fixing a bit and i'll post a rough version of the scenario (without the art) soon, just to give you guys a preview (the art takes ages for me to upload anyway).
also, i prob need more MF units so if you have any or know where to get any (i already used the ones in the CFC MF section) please post to enlighten me. i'll definitely visit the site which unsratchedfoot suggests to get the Panzer units.
Amenhotep7 Jun 25, 2004, 08:11 AM It's not the load time, it's just... Do you know how long it will take to move 4000 units on the first turn???
citizen001 Jun 25, 2004, 04:03 PM there's only about 2300 on the side of the allies and bout 1600 on German side. most German troops are defensive, and plus, there's that stack function where you can move stacks of units in one go.
i originally placed this many so that there would be intense fighting, but now i guess since you guys want to, i'll cut back a bit.
El Justo Jun 25, 2004, 04:08 PM yeah, that 1st turn will be hellish...but keep up the good work. unit diversity in such a scenario could be neat.
citizen001 Jun 26, 2004, 05:52 PM yeh, i'll be dling from cdg forums, so you'll get to see some cool ww2 units from ripptide.
citizen001 Jun 26, 2004, 06:26 PM do any of you guys know where i could find any PTW extras MF units? (for all of them
citizen001 Jun 30, 2004, 01:24 AM it seems like this scenario will be delayed for a while.
Amenhotep7 Jun 30, 2004, 06:12 AM Why's that?

Don't lose your lust for battle. You should continue cause we need more smaller scenarios as relief from the gravy train of megafatso mods that keep coming out.
Rik Meleet Jun 30, 2004, 09:08 AM Shame, I'd love to play this scenario.
Just wondering.... Isn't the unit upkeep cost for the Allies be enormous seeing the Allies have few cities and lots of units ...
ripptide Jun 30, 2004, 10:53 AM think I'd tend to agree with unscratchedfoot. While huge scens/mods with hundreds of unit type are neat, Normandy would lend itself very well to a series fater paced smaller scens, maybe based around a capture the flag style where the objectives would be much the same as the real ones (ie securing key areas for XX number of turns etc). But looks great so far either way )

that can be adjusted or a certain # of units can be flagged as free...DL/load/turn time and file size will be the main issues.
mr ripptide is right i think...a 'capture the flag'-type set-up would be nice. the 101st AB Div. assault on those gun batteries in Band of Bro's would be cool.
citizen001 Jul 08, 2004, 09:28 PM time constraints, way too much work
