Take A Number...

PLEASE DON'T POST UNLESS YOU HAVE A REQUEST... SEE RULE 3

Here's the deal, from now until Monday anyone who has a unit request may post it below. Monday Night I will randomly pick one of those requests to make. This idea came from another thread where Goldflash suggested I buy a Bingo roller and start picking numbers... It went on from there :D This may only be a one time deal or it may turn into a fairly regular event... So pick your requests wisely, and may the best randomly generated number be chosen.

Several Ground Rules:
1) Only one request per person.

2) Only one unit per request (you can't request a complete line of spearman, just one).

3) Please don't post other messages, because if the number lands on that one there won't be a request and I get off the hook and you might just upset some people :D

4) If I am already doing almost that exact unit I won't pick this one up... For example I'm already working on Bond, don't request Bond with a machine gun instead of his pistol.

5) Pictures of what you want are not needed until a number is picked, then I'll request pictures of the winner if the request isn't obvious.

6) I'll try to complete the unit in a timely manner but obviously the more complex the request the longer it will take.

7) All random results are final. No complaining will be tolerated. If the winner changes their mind within two days of the results being posted then a new random number will be chosen.

Addendum: Seconding someone else's request is fine... I'll count it exactly as if you had request it in the first place. And as someone said it will increase the chances of a particular unit being done. Although that counts as your request :D

To be as open and transparent as possible with the selection this is the site I will be using to generate the winning random number. It allows a person to enter the first and last number of a range and will pick any number of numbers in between... In this case I will be chosing from 2 to the number of the last post when I close the thread.

Decisions, decisions, so many choices....

A guerilla fighter with an Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) launcher (instead of an assault rifle). Prefereably something that would look suitable in either a modern brush-fire wars type scenario or in a post-apocalypse style scenario.

Thanks for doing this lottery Kinboat. I hope this turns into a regular event.

Might as well submit the picture nonetheless, yeah I trust me lucky charm. :mischief:

These Indo-Iranian boys rode around and ruined many a day for Romans, Scythians, and whoever else dared disturb them. The heavy knight-like rider here was armed with a very long lance and some also used bows. A full charge of Sarmatian knights was an unpleasant event indeed.

Since this feels like a once in a lifetime opurtunity (unless you want to do this often), I'm going to request the first request I ever made

Numidian Cavalry

This is a much better uu for Carthage, and probably would work for any African civ, and Rome as well. I would have wished Kryten had finished it, but I'm not sure that would happen, and this seems like a better idea (give Kryten a break to just work on Hoplites, or retire, or whatever he wanted to do ;) ).

Of course I have pics, just check my sig.

Kinboat
Jun 28, 2004, 09:04 PM
Well after 87 posts the requests have died down... maybe because everyone has already posted? At least the more frequent visitors. I'll be generating a number shortly and posting the results here.

I can only assure you that I will truely take the first number pulled and will not keep picking one until I get one that I "like" as someone suggested. Although you have nothing to go on besides my word, I would hope that would be enough.

If there is any major objection to this method and I decide to do another one of these in the future I suppose I could pick an impartial person from these boards that everyone would trust to generate the number without prejudice... Not sure if that is even possible but it could be one option to calm people's concerns.

Although now I have something of a puzzler on my hands... The number that came up was 70. This was Redking's request for a Zulu type warrior on horseback. Number one... not everyone has heard this but I have Kal-el's Zulu concept sketches on my to-do list already, so I'm planning on making a very similar unit at some time in the future. Number two... DPII has recently posted a preview of a similar unit. It's up to Redking at this point. If he wants to request a different unit... or I could try for another type of African Horseman, different than the Zulu on Quagga idea.

Shamless wishful thinking.

How about my Numidian Cavalry (see sig).

It was an African (Numidian) Light Cavalry that was very important as a mercenary to the army of Carthage, especially Hannibal's cross over the Alps. Their typical strategy would be to ride very close to the enemy (such as Roman Cavalry), fire a bunch of Javelins, and quickly ride away before they could be persued. They were also great at harrassing the enemy on a wide scale, and once drew the Romans into pursuit long before they were ready for battle (while giving time for most of Carthage's army to slowly prepare itself).

Unfortunately, the great usefulness of the Numidian Cavalry was the reason for Hannibal's loss. When Scipio landed on Africa, he made a deal with a Numidian King, and Hannibal's cavalry deserted him. He was forced to attack before Scipio and the Numidian King could unite his forces. He chose to use the other thing Carthage was famous for, their Elephants (African Forest Elephant, smaller than an Indian Elephant, believed to be extinct). Unfortunately, Elephants are very timid fighters, and it wasn't long before they were routed, trampling much of Hannibal's army. This proved that it wasn't Elephants that won victories for Hannibal (most of them died crossing the Alps anyway), it was his Numidian Cavalry.

I have a suggestion for Kinboat that obviously is not meant to be part of the lottery... Make parts.

For example, I was going to suggest that maybe Redking ask for a Mali Camel Rider for an African cavalry unit... but then I realized that you'd have to make a camel model, and also, indirectly, negate my usefulness ;).

BUT on the other hand, I could make this unit if I had some additional props that I can't find on the net. This also means that Kinboat doesn't have to worry about posing/rendering/compiling into storyboard, etc. So you might want to think about it as a way of easing the strain on yourself. If you make a number of costume items for the paperdoll and distribute them, then other Poser modelers can make the units themselves. Indeed, with Daz Studio (free) other people can even make them too I believe.

In fact, I will go one step farther... Kinboat, I think you should open a store at Renderosity or one of these places to sell these accessories. I know I would pay for them. And I'm sure other non-Civ players will buy them for their own purposes as well.

Kal-el
Jun 29, 2004, 11:21 AM
DPII, you would have to be using Kinboat's "Marc" model rather than the stock "Michael" figure in order to use any clothing he made.

That said, I would hate to lose Kinboat to simple prop making. He is far too valuable as a creative genius to forego the animation process. Now if he some people wanted to apprentice under him and relieve him of the rendering/compiling/storyboarding aspect, i.e. the tedium, I would whole-heartedly support that. In fact if KB wanted to work that way I would make it my mission to find an apprentice or two to help him out.

Dom Pedro II
Jun 29, 2004, 11:25 AM
I'm not saying he'd have to quite the unit-making biz altogether for the purpose of making props. I'm merely saying that it could held to alleviate some of the workload, and make a little money for himself at the same time if he decided to sell them...

But if he wanted to establish an apprenticeship program, I might be compelled to offer my services.

Edit: Also, if by the "Marc" you mean the Paperdoll figure he put on the forums a few months ago, I already have that.

I can always count on Kal-el to make more work for me... But now Dom Pedro II is doing it too :D
I'm actually on version 3 of my Paperdoll human figure that I use... I think I posted the second version. Number 3 is rather better in my opinion (not so humble opinion). One of the problems with making props and posting them at renderosity or somesuch site is that the props I do for Civ are rather low detail. Another problem (at least with the making money by selling) is that I'm generally opposed to the market society... personal grievences which do not need to be brought up here.
If anyone wants to use one of my models I'd be happy to send something along. I do get more enjoyment out of modeling something then out of the whole process that follows (although animating can be fun it often gets tedious trying to find the 50th way for something to fall down dead :D ). If you need a camel I could probably whip something up.
Maybe if I had a faster internet connection sending these large Poser files to someone else to compile the images wouldn't be so bad... But then I'd feel sorry for whoever got stuck with the job. All the work and none of the fun.

Oh, sorry guys

Didn't consider the collective anxiety angle.

It's a Zulu 19th century rifle-cavalry, along the lines of my original (late in the year 2002?) proposal, but a "regular", as if Shaka's empire had continued and increased in structure and material, and perhaps continued on it's way toward it's own brand of fascism. And yes, it's on a quagga-coloured horse, so it's doubly hypothetical.

Look at the first pic in this thread for the way the horse is requested to look.

The request was changed to be more of a Cavalry replacement for the Zulu, riding on a Quagga patterned horse... Not a Quagga but a horse that has either been bred to have similar markings or painted (whichever theory helps you get up in the morning).

Dom Pedro II
Jun 29, 2004, 05:59 PM
Kinboat, it was always II ;). Dom Pedro II was the last emperor of Brazil... Dom Pedro I was the first. Yes, Brazil after independence had a king from 1822 to 1889. The only sovereign country in the Americas to have a monarch. Woot? :crazyeye:

Also, I understand if you don't wish to sell your models, but really, my intent was not to add more work but to rather to ease the labor by having more people making units so you wouldn't have to. Are you at least accepting donations? ;)

I think you still could sell them though. If you've ever been to Turbosquid, you'll see that some people set very audacious prices for true garbage (which your stuff certainly isn't), and I'd imagine that they do it because somebody out there is willing to buy it. For somebody doing computer art, your stuff may not be worth them spending the money, but we're hardly the only people doing computer graphics out there. Just a thought anyway.

Also, I don't need a camel. I've already got one. It might not be as civvy as one you'd make, but I think it does the trick. Although if you'd really like to help me, hehe, I could use cataphract for a horse and a camel.

Kal-El does have a good point about apprenticeship though I think. You do a lot of work here, and I think anybody here would be willing to do whatever it takes to ease your workload. As long as it's not reducing requests... :nono:

Solution? Make what you have, or what is truly needed, not what they want. Chances are you will please enough poeple. Congrats to Redking for winning the unit lottery! :goodjob:

That being said however, I still feel that we should try to focus our collective energies on the unit making process. BeBro pointed out the sheer number of requests that he gets nearly every week for new units. From the comfortable distance of NOT being a unit creator/designer, I would say that that weekly flood of requests would drive me insane and quite possible frustrate me right out of the business.

I think that unit design should be coordinated based on time period. That being said, I feel we should start with ancient units and gradually progress our way up the temporal ladder. There are ALOT of ancient units left to be made for each civ, while there is an alarming number of modern units.

I have suggested in a previous thread AGES ago that perhaps we could start by using the Explore Armies section at this site http://www.dbaol.com/ . Is this not a sound and coordinating proposal? Would also lend some impartiality to this design process while providing some temporal focus.

BTW, what has happend to Mr. Kryten?

Well thats fine. I fully support creation based on want and need.

However, we are a big community of wanters and needers hehe. I just feel that SOME coordination should be tried here to produce a full RANGE of units.

The joke originated in the Peloponnesian War Senaro Development thread. TRhe scenario couldn't go anywhere becuase Kryten hadn't finished the custom units yet. And he had mysteriously dissappeared. so when I said 'HE's busy working on our units, and I'm putting on headphones so I won't hear you discourage me:p', one of the team members parodied the muslim prayer 'There is no God but Allah and Muhhamed is his prophet', and said 'There is no Kryten but Kryten and he is busy working on our units'.

Personally, while I was gone, I wasn't even checking the site or my topic threads because I didn't even want to see what was piling up for me... it can get to the poin that you don't want to do it anymore.

But I also threw a lot of previews out there and then had to follow through on them, so I put a lot of the pressure on myself.

But basically, you can't let it frustrate you. I take the requests as suggestions. Sometimes, they give me an idea for something I'd like. Sometimes they don't. And if they don't, I tune it out. You just smile and nod your way through it.

EDIT: But I've also not gotten anywhere near the volume of requests as other creators.
