Title shamelessly coppied from hbdragon88 thread :mischief:

Users of Microsoft's free email service will have access to 250MB of storage from the start of next month

Microsoft said on Wednesday that it will boost storage limits in its Hotmail Web email service, a move intended to counter similar steps taken by rivals Google and Yahoo.

The upgrade will increase Hotmail's free email storage limits from 2 megabytes to 250MB and its paid email service, which costs $19.95 (£10.99) a year, from 10MB to 2 gigabytes. The changes will begin in early July.

"With these new offers, storage will not be an issue for MSN Hotmail customers," Blake Irving, corporate vice president of communication services for MSN, said in a statement.

The storage follows similar announcements from Google and Yahoo. The storage boost started when Google announced in April that it plans to launch a new email service called Gmail that will give people 1GB of storage for free. The service has attracted some controversy, because it will serve advertisements based on keywords found in the text of peoples' email messages.

Indeed, Google's initial steps into storage increases countered the industry's trend to charge extra for more memory. Over the past few years, Yahoo and Hotmail have both taken steps to decrease memory in hopes of convincing free users to become paying subscribers.

Earlier this month, Yahoo launched its own upgrade to 100MB for free users and 2GB for its paid users. The company said the changes would make email storage a "nonissue."

"We'll remain focused on what emailers want and need, and people can expect to see a number of new enhancements to Yahoo Mail in the coming months," Yahoo spokeswoman Mary Osako said in response to the Microsoft announcement.

Ask Jeeves also plans to grant its email subscribers more storage room. Earlier this year, the search company acquired Internet Search Holdings, including My Way, The Excite Network and iWon.com, which all serve Web surfers with free email. Ask Jeeves plans to give each of the sites' email subscribers 125MB of free storage, up from an allottment of 3MB to 6MB previously.

Separately, Microsoft said it will offer free antivirus software to scan emails before they appear in a user's in-box.

Thats for free accounts. Premium is 2GB. Hotmail just beat Yahoo. Through I migh get a Yahho account just to increase the number of accounts I have. :mischief: Google still owns free email. I still find it funny that I am in possion of the most wanted thing on the internet. Gmail invites.

Hmm, this is kinda convenient. I don't get E-mails THIS often, but I have my Hotmail through my Outlook, so I put everything important from my Pop3 thingie to my other Inbox. Its weird, but it works.

Yes, I wish I had GMail invites. I must invite people! Those that I haven't already reserved (with certain people ;)), I will probably lotto off.

I wonder if they'll have Hotmail version 2.0 invites that you can purchase or something. Sounds like a good way to make money...

I agree, it's like the movies making the popcorn sizes bigger. When given more space than one actually needs, it's human nature to try to fill up the space as much as possible, even though it is unnecessary. One such example is people emailing random pictures to each other for no other reason than to fill up space (guilty as charged).

Well, this is cool, except the fact that Hotmail is still terrible. For example, Yahoo gives you 4 months before they deactivate your account. Hotmail gives you 10 freakin' days before you lose all your contact and email, and just 1 month before freezing it and bouncing back all emails. Then they give you 3 months before they permanently delete your account. I mean...jesus...I'm not gonna log in every 10 days just to keep my contacts and email.

The account policies that govern your use of Hotmail are detailed in our Online Help. Please note that you must sign into your Hotmail account at least once every 30 days. If you do not, your account will become inactive. After being inactive for 90 days, it will be deleted. One major reason I will not stay with hotmail is because when you follow a link in the email hotmail opens it in a new page that is a hotmail/new-page hybrid. I hate that. munzy - they have text ads to the right of your message, and that's all the ads you get with Gmail. Although I hate those [insert favorite word here] because Opera doesn't support their encryption, which means I have to boot up Firefox or IE to use Gmail.

The Hotmail frame is indeed annoying, which is why I never used Hotmail for subscription forums like this one. Ad Muncher (http://www.admuncher.com) has a nice filter to get rid of those stupid frames (you have to download it; it's through advanced filters).

MSN has rolled out free e-mail anti-virus protection to all MSN Hotmail customers worldwide, making Hotmail the only free global e-mail service to both scan and clean incoming and outgoing e-mail for viruses and worms before they can enter your inbox and risk infecting your PC.
Beginning this fall, MSN will increase free Hotmail account inbox storage by 125 times its current capacity to 250MB. Additionally, you will be able to send attachments up to 10MB.

In addition, free Hotmail customers will also receive MSN Calendar free, enabling both individual and shared calendaring with your storage upgrade.

pft, they haven't said anything. They just keep saying that its "GOING" to be upgraded. But then again, last year we heard that Half Life 2 was "GOING" to be released, so I'm not keeping my hopes up.

Dell19
Aug 05, 2004, 07:57 AM
If you are playing with someone in real life then playing a game of Civ mp in real time might make more sense since it should be easier to be onlie at the same time. The main benefit of PBEMs and which makes them fun is that you can have several people playing and passing the save between each other so that it is possible to have multiplayer games where deals can be formed between the human players and it allows scenarios to be played at their best. I.e. playing the Napoleonic scenario with every slot filled with a human player makes for a very interesting game.

So PBEMs can be fun and their main advantage is that they allow a large number of people to play together when they might not normally be able to.

hbdragon88
Aug 06, 2004, 02:18 AM
If it's been a month and they haven't activated bigger accounts, I would move some PBEMs to different accounts, rather than have them embarassingly bounce back. Or tell your group of your alternative email account in case they do bounce.
