Offside is a rule designed to prevent goal hanging - I think. Anyway, it serves to slow down the game and reduce goals.

In the interest of making after-match tie-breakers less common, who thinks Extra Time should be played without the offside rule?

It is one of the more sane ideas I could come up with to rid the game of the much hated penalty shootout, and there were quite a few wacky ideas... :p

They got rid of the offside rule for field hockey. I think it actually improved the game.

Offside is there to prevent cherry picking. It's so you can't have someone hang around the opponent's goal to get shots off any loose balls, or so nobody can just pass it all the way down the field for a one on one with the goalie. Or i think that's what it is for.

Anyway, if it wasn't there people woud be getting a lot of breakaways, which would be exciting, and I can't really think of a con, except for it harder to play defense.

There's more emphasis on marking strikers when there isn't an offside trap. The defensive play is therefore more tiring, and somewhat different in style, but it's still a team effort.

I can't think of a con either. I think that teams cannot win with the offside rule, then they should try without it.

To have such an extra time is also a gradual evolution from normal play to penalties.

Why do people always want to mess about with the beautiful game? The offside is an integral part of football and it should remain so. Why don't we get rid of goalkeepers and put greased pigs in goal. That would liven things up. How about we introduce three or four extra footballs...

Playing without offside is terrible. You end with a game with no midfield, with a group of tall strikers next to the goal and the ball whacked into the area from 60 yards away. The offside rule was introduced to prevent teams packing the goal. Imagine 5 or 6 players inside the 6 yard box all the time!

without offside, football becomes too much like american eggball. A long pass and a goal. Midfielders would become obsolete. You just need 2 guys that can play a perfect long ball (Heitinga,Frank de Boer), 2 guys that are really good at man marking and some really fast runners...

Keep the game as it is. They say never change a winning team. Football is a winning team.

Football without the offside rule is no longer football... Simple as that.

I appreciate that this is an idea to eliminate the artificial horror-show that is penalties, but at least penalties are exciting. Football without offside would be excruciating.

I am for keeping the offside rule, but they should get rid of that jackassed active/passive offside, which only leads to bad referee decisions.

Offside is one of the most fundamental rules of football!!!! It is impossible to change it without totally changing football!!
As has been said, without offside the ball would simply be punted from one box to the other with no midfield. It would be horrible!

I coached my daughter's Rec league team for about 6 years and hated the
offsides rule until I finally figured out what you posted  . I always
thought it was the D's fault for letting someone get behind them, not the O's
fault for doing it. But now I have seen the light ;) :D .

In order to play attractive attacking football (don't use the s-word please), the off-side rule is 100% needed. Simple as that.

Apart from that: nothing wrong with penalty shoot outs, after 120 minutes of undecisive football.
