What is it was one terabyte of email space? :D
Google ups the email storage ante - again

Stephen Shankland

Tell us your opinion

The battle of the gigabytes continues - for some email users, Gmail is now offering a terabyte of storage

Google just escalated the email storage arms race by a factor of 1,000.

Several users of the search engine's Gmail Web-based email service noticed on Tuesday that their storage limits had quietly been raised to one million megabytes, or one terabyte. That's four times the typical capacity of a new high-end PC's hard drive.

The Gmail service still is in testing, and it wasn't immediately clear how widely Google will offer the higher storage limit, under what conditions, or to which users.

Google didn't respond for requests for comment late on Tuesday.

Detroit resident Rajiv Vyas, who has been using Gmail for about a month, was wowed by the change. "It's great. Although I am not sure what I will do will all this memory," he said. "In the long run, it would help me store not only photos but every file on my desktop. This is 10 times more [storage space] than what I have on my office or home PC."

Others who spotted the change posted notices to Web logs and Web sites.

Google triggered a rush to offer more storage space for Web-based email services with the April announcement of 1GB of capacity. The move pressured the dominant Web-based email service providers, Yahoo and Microsoft's Hotmail, which currently charge subscribers $10 to $50 per year for a much smaller amount of email storage space.

Yahoo responded to Gmail with a plan for 100MB of space. Lycos began offering 1GB for a fee. And the Macintosh-focused competitor Spymac offers 1GB for free.

Gmail's liberal storage limits may be popular, but the service's terms triggered privacy concerns because of Google's plan scan the content of email messages in order to serve up targeted advertisements.

More Gmail news:

Gmailers can now import address books stored by other email services into their email account

Google has quietly added a feature to its free email service that lets people import their address book contacts from rivals Yahoo, Microsoft and America Online.

Since the weekend, Google's free email service, called Gmail, has been letting its users transfer their address book contacts from Yahoo Mail, Microsoft's Hotmail and AOL Mail. Yahoo allows immediate exporting of its contact lists onto other clients such as Gmail, but for Hotmail and AOL in particular, people have to build their special files through a spreadsheet, which means the process would normally involve more steps.

Gmail's software also lets people add contacts from Microsoft's Outlook email client, a feature supported by Yahoo and Hotmail as well.

A Google spokesman confirmed that the tool, and other new features, launched over the weekend. He declined to comment further, citing the company's quiet period before it goes public later this year.

The launch of the feature illustrates the rising tide of one-upmanship surrounding free email. Google in April began offering a test version of Gmail that included 1GB of free storage. The launch altered the free email landscape, dominated by Yahoo and Hotmail, and caused Yahoo to increase its own free storage limit from 4MB to 100MB. Hotmail then raised its storage limit from 2MB to 250MB.

While Yahoo and Hotmail have the advantage of many years of service and millions of users, Google's entry could shift the balance of power. In fact, Google has launched a number of properties, such as its Orkut social networking site and Google News, that have put it in closer competition against the Web portal giants.

Yahoo spokeswoman Mary Osako said the new tool doesn't change the competitive balance among the services. "Yahoo Mail users have enjoyed the ability to both import and export address book information for years, and we hope that others in the industry will share our commitment to providing consumers with a highly useful and convenient service," she said.

Microsoft did not immediately comment on the new features. The Gmail updates were first reported by Microsoft Watch.

In addition to its contact import tool, Gmail now gives users the option of including a signature at the bottom of messages. Gmail also began supporting Apple Computer's Mac OS X's Safari Web browsers, for versions 1.2.1 and newer.

Google also last week began promoting on its home page a link to Picasa, an online photo site that the company acquired last week, the spokesman confirmed.

And the worst news yet

Google has altered its Gmail membership policy to stop people making money from the sale of popular email addresses

Google changed its Gmail membership policy this week to prevent people from profiting from the sale of popular email names.

According to Google's new policy, altered on Monday, the Web search company prohibits Gmail subscribers from selling, trading or transferring the free email accounts "for any unauthorised commercial purpose." It also bars people from setting up multiple accounts in violation of the policy.

The changes are designed to deter people from creating multiple email accounts with the purpose of reselling or trading them, according to a source at the company. The policy alterations do not target people trying to barter Gmail invitations, which allow people to sign up for a new membership.

The search company was probably responding to instances of individuals and commercial ventures attempting to profit from the popular, yet not widely available, service. For example, an eBay auction for Gmail account names "Bush04@gmail.com" or "Kerry04@gmail.com" -- for the respective campaigns of the top Republican and Democratic presidential candidates -- could violate the rule.

Google began publicly testing Gmail in late March, in a move that rattled rival email providers with promises of vast improvements to free Web-based email. Gmail, for example, offers users a whopping 1 gigabyte of storage and lets people search unlimited archives of conversations. At first, Google let only select family and friends open accounts, yet it has slowly opened up membership more broadly to friends of those already holding accounts.

Yet the clublike demand for accounts has inspired entrepreneurs. Online auction site eBay has as many as 2,000 listings for Gmail invitations for sale, ranging from 1 cent to as much as $30 for 10 accounts. Web operations such as Gmail Swap have cropped up to help people exchange invitations for goods and services. And the Institute for Spam and Public Policy recently started a Web site and campaign called Gmail 4 Troops to encourage people to share their Gmail invitations with military fighting in the Iraqi war.

Potentially more concerning, however, could be people who sign up for Gmail accounts with a common or company-trademarked name with a profit motive. The practice is similar to parties who purchase potentially lucrative, trademarked domain names and attempt to sell them to the owner, a practice called domain squatting.

Google's Gmail also has sparked criticism from privacy advocates because it involves scanning the contents of email and delivering related ads. The California Senate passed a Gmail bill that seeks to limit companies' ability to survey email for advertising purposes.

I do not see what all the fuss with gmail is about.

Why is it better than other providers?

I can chose my E-Mail address freely at GMX, 1 GB is for free, for 2,99 EUR / month I get 5 GB universal storage (an accessible data folder and e-mail combined) and virusscan plus other services like 50 free text messages and stuff.

You get 1 GB plus ads for free. This is pretty similar to GMAIL.

Invites allow people who have gmail accounts to invite people who don't have gmail accounts to create them (i.e. bring more people into it). They want to get rid of them because, in most cases, they've gotten so many of them that they've given one to everyone they know that would want one, and don't want the rest to go to waste.

I think maybe what Gmail may be doing now by giving so many invites away is trying to get everyone who would want an account in before they make it generally available to the public (i.e. without an invite), so that the rush is lessened when they do open it up.

Now we're getting there. :) Not like I need to be reissued invites. They seem to like giving them out to me. Logged in this morning to see I have 6 again. :(

I have one :) I just like labels and filters alot. Search powered by the great google is very nice too :)
And of course the space of 1 GB, not to send big emails, but to not to have to erase an email anymore, some are very important.

There are some others out there, but this is by google, so for me is the best :goodjob:

Now, I'm just waiting for Opera 7.60 Final to be released...damn...then I can finally break loose of Firefox's hell and move out...

Also, did anyone like the original look? The invitations link was on a blue bar at the top? Now it's back to the annoying link on the left-hand side and FF interprets that as a popup and blocks it (even though I put gmail.google.com as an "allowed site"...sighs).

Nah. I like this look a lot better. I must say several of the features are nice to have (through the save draft gets rid of the need for my yahoo acount. :()

Some features we know you've wanted (and one we should have had all along):

Gmail Notifier
Want to know if you've got new mail? Let us do the checking so you don't have to. Find out when new messages arrive, and even see their subjects, senders and snippets, all without having to open a web browser. Learn more

Search your contacts
With the new and improved Contacts list, search for a contact as easily as you would a message in Gmail. Add notes and phone numbers. View messages directly from the Contacts list. Stay in touch with the people in your life more easily than ever before. Learn more

Automatic forwarding to another email account
We're testing a new feature that lets you forward new incoming messages to any email account you want. It's free during the test and you can set it up in seconds. Even set up filters to forward only some of your messages. It's your mail. Get it the way you want it. Learn more

And finally... Save Drafts!
For when you can't find the right words, save drafts and find them later. Learn more

http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/ The notifier is a great addition. :)

Nov 06, 2004, 03:27 PM
If G-mail is better than Yahoo mail then maybe... But 100 megs should be enough for me. I'm currently using less than 1%, so I don't really need G-mail's 1 GB.

Yahoo has a 4-month inactivity policy.

I really hate Gmail because all they have are stupid "labels" but no "folders." I like folders, but there are none...

You can create "labels". It's really the same thing. I find it odd that they call it a label though, since a label is read-only object in programming, and implies that it doesn't store any data. But, that's what they call it.

Labels are much better. :p Can have more then one label for a single e mail. :p

Clicking the "Archive" button removes them from the inbox.

You can archive them with or with out a label. :) Archiving removes them from your inbox but you can still acess the e mails through the all mail section. :)

I have 50 to, i read somewhere that they had increased it to 50, to get more people i guess. Everybody who wants can get a G-MAIL invite now, i also saw a link to a website where they had gatherd a bunch of Gmail invites that they where sending out.

When Google officially announces gmail (in the near future, most likely), they probably will say that they already got 10 million gmail users, thanks to all those invites sent. :D

You have to give their marketing team credit for the invites idea. It somehow makes gmail more desirable, just because you need an invite to get an account.

Heh, I've got one now.
Part of the hype! Yesssss!!!!!!!

Couldn't get the adress I wanted though which seems a bit odd. Really all combinations with my first and last name were taken and it's not that my name is that common, especially since I'm dutch and the name just doesn't exist outside of my tiny country...

Oh well, now my name is almost equal to my login here. ;)

G-mail doesn't work with Opera as browser.
How do other Opera users circumvent this? Is there a plug-in or a setting I need to change? I tried to identify as IE6 but then it said it required ActiveX to be turned on. I think Opera doesn't have ActiveX but I'm not sure if that's the only problem.

Gmail hasn't come up with a
Gmail thing compatible with Opera, so yeah. But it should work on IE6 (or Mozilla or Firefox)
btw, your welcome :)

I found that if you have Opera identify as Mozilla, and click "sign in anyway", it will work. This is on Opera 8.0 Beta... I don't know if the same thing will work on Opera 7.54

ummmm........

I got a gmail account courtesy LLXerxes since my hotmail was acting all freaky and my yahoo was overwhelmed with spam.

So far the only things I miss are the white list and the Rich Text Editor. Any analogues in Gmail that I just haven't spotted yet?
