View Full Version : The Chronicle of a Lion...(succession game)
Little Raven Nov 15, 2001, 06:08 PM Author’s notes:
1) AUGH! I cannot find a way to post more than one screenshot without having a webpage, so you’ll only get the end-of-the-reign report shot. I’ll try to remedy this situation before my next turn.
2) The first time I started the game, we ended up as.....the Americans! Hah! As promised, I restarted, but I thought it was amusing none the less.
And now...................the Chronicle of a Lion...............
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was the year 7824 AT and the space module had just crashed into the mountainside. Over 100,000 people had been on board. The smoke was roaring down the mountainside as I gazed on in shock and fear. What had caused the sudden catastrophe?
I remember chatting away with the girls from section C4, when the alarm bells went wild. Explosions had rocked the ship, gravity had been lost almost immediately, and smoke had erupted everywhere. Everyone had immediately sought out the escape pods, where, to my good fortune, I had found my best friend for the past 10 years. We had ejected only moments before impact and I was still shaken from being thrown around like a sack of beans.
All our supplies had been aboard: the laser weapons, the e-books, our water supply, the food replicator, the robotic defense units, needed medical supplies, the uranium depot, the... A string of curses from my friend had shattered the shock of those of us who had made it. We all stared at each other in shock. "What do we do now?" could be heard on everyone's lips.
There couldn't have been more than 10,000 of us left. Worst of all, those in the forward sections had never had a chance to escape. Only the rear sections - family - had survived. All of our experts, military leaders, heroes - my god, every important person - had been killed. We didn't even have a leader left! And here we were on a new world, unexplored and no place to call home...
Later on, over the fire that someone had been able to raise (how one does it without a laser pen, I didn't know - oh the knowledge that had been lost!), representatives from our group met to discuss what we could do. Despair reined! Story after story about our doom began to take hold. Someone has to take control of the situation and lead our people to salvation!
I stood, and spoke more eloquently than I ever had before: about hope, about our collective history, and our open future...
Later, I found myself alone. I listened in joy to the sounds around me. These people depended on me. In universal acclaim I had been asked to lead us to a new life! I had accepted - I was their leader - I only hoped I would lead them well...
- From the memoirs of the first Emperor, Savior of the People and Guardian of the Realm
And lead he did. Over deserts and mountains, through jungle and blizzard and rain. But nowhere could the people find peace. What seeds they had would not grow in the strange new land. Desperately they foraged, but they would quickly exhaust the resources in the area, and so would move on. The elders died, and though they tried to teach the children what they knew, almost everything was lost. Only our alphabet and knowledge of pottery remains today. We do not know how long we existed as nomads. We have no records other than the Holy Memoir, and though it is constructed of a wondrous, near-indestructible material, much of it has been rendered illegible over the centuries. And yet we are still one people; the long years of hardship have not shattered our resolve. At long last a new leader has arisen! No more shall we wander! All hail, Emperor Raven of the English!
4000 BC – The tribe has assembled, ready to follow our new leader. Raven has ordered that the fittest of our young men be made into scouts, to search for the resources our new empire will require. Surely they have been blessed by the gods, for already they have entered a village of Celts who have graciously given our emperor a gift of 25 gold!
After much deliberation, Raven decides that we must march for a while longer. Though our people are ready to settle, he insists we move to the west, next to a river.
3950 BC – At long last, our people have settled. The town of London has been formed along the Thames river. Our people are grateful to have a home at last, but our worker has found wheat that will be outside our reach because of the move. Our scouting party locates rich dyes in the forests south of London. Raven orders that warriors be trained.
3900 BC – Wise men appeal for funding, but every advance will take many centuries, so Raven turns down the funding and sets them to research writing.
3800 BC – Workers complete a road near London. Moving north, he discovers flood plains and more wheat! Ah, cruel fates! A cornucopia of food that London shall never enjoy!
3750 – Our scouts find gems in the mountains to the northeast.
3700 – A new company of warriors has been formed at London! Raven orders them to scout the northwest, and begins training more.
3650 – Speculation that London may be built on an island is laid to rest by the discovery of large, fertile plains to the northwest.
3600 BC - Our scouts move into a village to the northeast. They were so overwhelmed by our presence that they immediately abandoned their village to follow us! New citizens for the empire! But we have also contacted the first of our rivals; a cunning though hygienically challenged group of people who call themselves Russians. We trade our alphabet for their knowledge of Bronze Working.
3550 BC – The emperor decides to settle the new city slightly overlapping with London, on the theory that once the jungle is cleared, there will be plenty of food for all.
3450 BC – The city of York is founded! Though not far from London, the two cities are separated by a thick swatch of putrid jungle. Raven hopes to clear it one day, but for now the worker is busy building a road to a new city site.
A new warrior company is formed in London. The emperor decides to gamble, and send him scouting to the south, while training yet another warrior.
3400 BC – The people rush to expand the Imperial Palace. Raven chooses a nice set of stairs. Scouts have contacted yet another people to the north. They are called Germans, and their envoys are friendly. We trade alphabet for warrior code. However, the emperor is concerned that things are becoming a bit crowded. In reflection, he laments not forming York closer to the Germans. Fortunately, London has finally grown. Warrior production is shifted towards a settler.
3350 – Scout uncovers incense near the Germans! Our warrior in the west regions contacts the Phoenicians, who give him maps of the area.
3300 – Our warriors to the south have found nothing but ocean. We must expand north, towards the Germans and Russians.
3250 – Southern warrior is recalled to London for garrison duty.
3200 – More warriors are pressed into service at York. Unfortunately, food is short there, and it will not grow for some time. The emperor decides to use new knowledge to build trained spearmen, who will better guard our nation.
3100 – Russian borders are sighted. They are farther to the north than we had thought, almost above the Germans. The emperor is relived to discover this, as it leaves more lands open for English settlers.
3050 – Craving more knowledge, the emperor orders that York produce a scout instead.
3000 BC – The far western tip of the continent has been found. Disturbing news reaches us from our scout in the north, a Russian settler has been seen moving south. London, however, is on the verge of producing a settler as well, and a road to new site near German territory has been completed.
But it will fall onto others to complete these tasks, for the long years have taken their toll on the emperor. Unable to continue the line of Raven, he orders that his most capable commander, Captain Ludd, assume leadership of the English people. “Carry us forward into glory, and forget not our origin, lest we choose someday to return…”
When Captain Ludd took over, our world looked like this...
Little Raven Nov 15, 2001, 06:09 PM She's all yours, Captain. Hope I didn't screw you over too badly.
Thorwahl999 Nov 15, 2001, 06:24 PM Hehe, im really enjoying your stories - also following your Rise of Rome thread. Just wanted you to know your writing good stuff:)
Keep it up!
Thorwahl
Little Raven Nov 15, 2001, 06:33 PM And now...let the peanut gallery open fire!
I'll start. Were I still in charge, I would take the settler that London is about to make and move it up the road between the hill and create a city there. The floodplains should give you a ton of food, though the city will occasionally suffer disease. If you can mine a hill you should get plenty of shields. I'm not quite sure what I was thinking when I ordered York to produce a scout. (probably "Scouts are cool!") At any rate, I'd change it back to spearmen if nothing better. Once you build the spearman you can send the warrior scouting if you really want to.
I have a feeling we'll have to kick some tail before too long. There just isn't enough land to go around...
Little Raven Nov 17, 2001, 03:11 PM Ack! The empire needs an heir! Jhigham, ready yourself; for if the Captain cannot be located soon, the empire may call upon you!
Captain Ludd Nov 17, 2001, 06:04 PM Sorry...just this part of the week is busy for me. But Sunday I have all kinds of time so I'll take my turns and see if I can write something of interest for the gang.
I've already downloaded the game and taken a quick look at the screenshot.
Again...sorry for not letting you know I was stilll here. (But I do part time work on the net so I'm pretty much on ten times a day)
King Ludd the first will report back tomorrow:king:
Little Raven Nov 17, 2001, 06:17 PM Ah....jolly good. Was getting worried for a moment there....
But don't worry, I completely understand...life has a pesky way of interfering with computer gaming time! :)
Good luck with your reign! :king:
Ilspana Nov 18, 2001, 05:07 PM Well I'm back. What's the situation with the turns? am i to seize power after Ludd?
Captain Ludd Nov 19, 2001, 08:51 AM From the hands of the Founding Raven, Captain Ludd accepts the torch of leadership. Shortly after being fitted for his throne he quickly decides that the most important project for his people is the expansion of their borders to include both room to settle and resources to thrive. Both will be in high demand given the confined territory that "The Three Nations" find themselves in.
2950 BC - In his capital of London Ludd inherits a fully equiped group of hardy settlers eager to move to new lands and open them for the empire. He decides to send them north to help fix a proper border with the Germans and claim a region rich in incense.
In the barren village of York a scout is produced. He is sent off along to explore northwards along the east coast so that a better understanding of the lands can be gained.
Both London and York are set to produce armed spearmen. It would be prefered that more settlers be built but the population grows slowly.
In the north our other scout continues his work.
2900 BC - Our workers build roads in the north. Clearly we must drive in this direction lest the German people hem us in early.
At the south western tip of the continant our roaming warriors spot another distant land off shores. If only we had some way of crossing such a body of water. Perhaps in times our people will walk on those very beaches.
2850 BC - The crown is heavy as work continues. Our scouts report that in the north the shore has been reached. Truely this is little more then a island. Not fit to hold three peoples.
2800 BC - Our scouts find the Russian capital of Moscow. They are not overly impressed.
2750 BC - A disaster! Just before our settlers could stake out the incense rich valley for our own the Germans lay claim to the area with the building of the sqalid village of Liepzig. Dis-heartened our settlers turn west instead in hopes of establishing a town that will be the source of great wealth in gold for years to come.
2710 BC - Our workers continue to build roads. Captain Ludd gives many speaches about the value of "infrastructure".
2670 BC - Magyars! Two bands of warriors seemingly bent on pillage and plunder are found in the western reaches. Our warriors attack one such band across the grasslands. After a great battle our warrior is victorious. They are wounded and weary but can now count themselves as veterans. The Magyar village is sighted.
2630 BC - The second Magyar band attacks our warriors and is crushed easily. Our warriors advance on the Magyar settlement but are handed a bloody deafeat. These magyars are of a tougher mettle then we had thought! Our people mourn and plans are made to avenge our fallen warriors.
2590 BC - The great town of Nottingham is established. Built on the heels of a military defeat our people feel a slight rush of excitment. The town is close to fertile flood plains and rich veins of gold. Both of these will be of value as we seek to grow. Right away the people of Nottingham are ordered to build more settlers...it is hoped that this city may on its own establish the northern border against possible German encroachments.
2550 BC - Our workers connect the town of Nottingham with our beloved capital.
2510 BC - London and York raise spearmen that will aid in the empires defence.
York is then tasked to build workers so that it may aquire the means to grow into a thriving city. Clearly the lands around it need to be worked by our hands. Their warrior is sent to Nottingham to secure the city.
London sends its warriors towards the Magyar camp. Blood is on their minds while the city begins to produce more people to settle far off lands.
2470 BC - Our scouts have now a very good understanding of the continant we share. Over the next few years they will probe our neighbors territory. Some say to learn their ways...others whisper about "The greater Empire"...and idea that the entire continant belongs in the hands of the southern peoples.
2430 BC - Our workers continue to improve the area around Nottingham. It's growth is unquestionable. Population pressures will have an effect before too long it is hoped.
Negotiatons are entered into with the Germans. For the price of 60gold they trade to us their knowledge of "the wheel". It is then found that horses are an ample commodity. A note is made that we must secure some of these beasts for our own use but the issue is not pressing.
2390 BC - Writing is discovered. As our people are to be occupied with with growing our borders for some time it is felt that philisophical questions should be raised now. More practical advances can e obtained at a later date. Scientific research is raised. An edge is sought.
Our warriors, having travelled from London, come across Magyar warriors in the hills.
2350 BC - Our wariors are attacked by the barbarian Magyars and win a bloody battle. They are ordered to rest before continueing their campaign.
A Vandal band of warriors is spotted noth of York. Their primitive clubs will be no match for our advanced speaman garrisoned there.
2310 BC - York produces some workers to toil in its fields. The townspeople then set to the construction of a granery to facilitate their growth. This project may be change prior to its completion.
2270 BC - The vandal warriors attack York in a fruitless endeavor. The mighty spearmen don't even exert themselves enough to gain any valuable experience from the tawdry affair.
The people decide to expand the Palace. More out of apathy then anything else Ludd suspects. He decides that he would like to move out of the cave...so some rooms are built. Heating remains a problem.
2230 BC - Our warriors attack the hated Magyars camp and crush it with their stone axes. A bounty of 25gold is taken for the coffers.
Work on a goldmine near Nottingam is begun. Ludd rubs his hands together maniacally at the thought of diverting such wealth to his men of learning.
2190 BC - The warriors now turn east to root out a suspected nest of Vandals lurking in the region somewhere north of York.
2150 - Our scouts in the south west discover the hiding place for Jute warriors. Though these people have never threatened us they have been seen to glare menacingly. There time is short.
Captain Ludd nears the end of his reign. His succesor is unclear but he is confidant that certain projects will be continued. Most importantly the securing of proper borders with the Germans and the aquistion of valuable resources.
So ends the reign of Ludd the first :king:
******
Hope that's okay...my fist time and all. I'll attach the game and hope it uploads. I'm not sure on how to do the screenshot...I'll see if I can work...but if not could the next in line post it for me 'till I figure it out? Thanks in advance :)
Little Raven Nov 19, 2001, 11:24 AM Good work, Ludd! May the English continue to prosper!
And now we must choose a succesor. I suggest that Ilspana take over. That way we can keep the turns as close to the original order as possible.
As for screenshots, I'm at work, and won't be able to download the game and take some till I get home. Posting one isn't hard, all you have to do is attach it to a post, like you did the game. (just make sure you resize it otherwise it'll make the page hard to read) Posting multiple screenshot in one post seems to require use of a seperate web page. I'm trying to get that sorted out right now.
As for the game, sounds like we're doing ok all things considered. I definately subscribe to the "Greater Empire" theory...though now is probably not the right time. We need more settlers! Must expand......
Little Raven Nov 21, 2001, 09:21 AM Ilspana seems to have disappeared. If we don't get a message from him by tonight, we must pass the torch to Jhigham. The English must march forward!
Ilspana Nov 21, 2001, 01:41 PM i havent disappeared. give me a day and i'll post my report.
Little Raven Nov 21, 2001, 02:25 PM Oh good. We should probably make it standard practice to let people know when you've downloaded the game and are working on your turn. Should help avoid some confusion.
Good luck on your reign, Ilspana! Do the English proud!
Ilspana Nov 23, 2001, 08:44 PM Sorry guys, you're gonna have to make my turn the last one... I just can't find the time to write lately and i dont see any breaks in my schedule in the near future.
So just keep going without me until the last turn. If i'm ready then I'll let you know. If not then i'll let you know anyway.
sorry again
ukrneal Nov 24, 2001, 02:37 AM Who's next?
WarandPeace Nov 24, 2001, 08:38 AM Jeez Christ that's A LOT of writing. You guys must enjoy playing RPG games too eh? UO, EQ anyone?
Ilspana Nov 24, 2001, 12:11 PM Actually, i follow mmorpgs before they come out and just post on the story boards :)
When they come out, they're rarely live up to the world our writers create in the stories so i dont even play them. Plus i really dont like mmorpgs. I like single player stuff like Morrowind will be. It will probably be a better game for roleplaying than some multiplayer games, ironically..
Little Raven Nov 24, 2001, 03:10 PM I almost never play RPGs. Fallout is probably the one exception. EQ is basically a graphical MUD, and I mudded myself out on text games long ago. Like Ilspana, I find the stories generated on forums like these are far better than anything an MMORPG can come up with.
Next in line is Jhigham. After Jhigham comes Zoidberg, then Urkneal, then Ilspana again. I'm currently on vacation, and while I have forum access, it's somewhat spotty, so I won't be around as much as usual until Tuesday. Fortunately, I don't think we'll get around to me before then. :)
jhigham Nov 26, 2001, 11:53 PM The people of England accept the without undue concern, content to live out their lives on this peaceful island.
2110:
A group of citizens in London has organized, and wishes to form a new city. After consulting with my advisors, I send them to the north, to Lake Preston. The fresh water will make at a great city, and in the more immediate future they will be able to raise horses for business and entertainment.
Our scout to the south has discovered a band of barbarians, and is being chased about. Our young band of warriors is sent off to tame the barbarian hoards.
In York it is decided that our military is too weak, and production on our Granery is halted in order to train and equip archers.
2170:
Our warriors rendezvous with the scout, who informs them that the barbarians are close on his heels. They dig in on the banks of the river, hidden in the jungle primeval. The scout continues on, intent on investigating the progress of the Germans to the north.
1990:
Terrible news! The barbarian hordes defeat our warriors in a terrible battle. The citizens of Nottingham are not worried, however, for they are well defended. I order the scouts back to try to lure the barbarians into a poor position.
1950:
Our scout to the north checks out the Russians. They have made some progress, but they will prove to be no match for us.
1870:
The city of Hastings is founded by Lake Preston. Our workers are building a road to this location, to provide horses for our empire.
1830:
The barbarians have been lured into attacking Nottingham across the river, and our warriors are ready for them. The scout remains vigilant for further incursions.
1725:
London produces Archers, to further our military and possibly defeat the barbarians. They are sent to the north, to defeat a barbarian encampment that threatens York and Nottingham. The barbarians to the south are hidden in the peaks and valleys of that small mountain range, and it would take considerable effort to oust them.
1700:
Spearmen are sent from York to Nottingham. They will defend that city, while the warriors defend the settlers that are organizing there. It is decided that York can safely be left undefended for several years, because there is no threat near to the city.
1675:
Settlers and Warrors head out from Nottingham. The Germans have built a city to our south, near a large bit of Dye, so the best land is to the west on the river. The Dyes are unimportant for now (there are Dyes southeast of London) and the Germans will have a hard time in that location (perhaps they will find the English culture more to their fitting...). The Russians have formed a city to the north of Hastings, near some incense.
1625:
Our archers dispatch the Vandal encampent near Hastings without any trouble, and recover 25 gold for our coffers.
1600:
York produces spearmen to again defend the town. Our scout heads north again, with our Archer.
1575:
Canturbury is founded to the west. It is located near a river, and has access to bountiful game. The Russians demand to learn about Writing from us! I consult my advisors, who indicate that our military is easily a match for theirs. Previously, while discussing a trade with them, I discovered that they had little military knowledge, and so I am certain that we can withstand them. I refuse to give in, and they declare war on us. Our archers will form a probe to the north, and I verify that our cities are producing hearty defenders.
1525:
With the discovery of writing we can establish an embassy with the Germans. I work on the easily swayed leader of the Germans, and give them 10 gold, one leader to another. After discussing trades late into the night (and deep into the mead), I mention my troubles with the English. The Germans, it turns out, are not particularily thrilled with them either, and would love an excuse to exercise their military. I mention this discovery of Masonry, which their scientists have discovered, and how it may be vital to our war interests. Already well into his cups, I'm sure that Frederick has forgotten that I am already at war with Russia, and agrees to teach us about Masonry in exchange for an alliance against them.
Since Germany is between us and Russia, I am certain that we will see little of the war. I inform our city govenors that they do not need to focus on the military, and can look to improving their cities. For now, we need to make sure our cities are well defended, so we continue to produce some spearmen, but in the future it will be different.
1500:
Our citizens are happy, and build an addition to my Palace. Unfortunately, I must pass the reins before getting an opportunity to enjoy this.
Settlers are gathering near London, and my successor must decide where they should go. There are not many optimal locations on this small island, so it will be a tough choice. The bountiful wheatland west of London may be the best location, although they will be too cramped to grow truly large.
Chariots are being produced in Hastings, and they may be used to harrass the Russians. They will probably not be worth much attacking the cities, where the defenders will be dug in, but hit and run attacks can wreak havoc. Our scientists are researching Iron, which is a strong metal that will give our forces an edge in any battle. With this we may choose to mount a true offensive against the Russians, or hold it in reserve, only time will tell.
jhigham Nov 27, 2001, 12:00 AM Now for a little discussion.
1) HOW THE **** DID MY WARRIORS DIE!!!! Fortified in the jungle vs barbarians coming across the river, bleh.
I think we are in good shape, but we'll need to cleanse this island, and probably move our Palace. I was worried when I first saw the map and our location, but things are looking ok. The Germans are running a little behind, and the Russians are pretty even with us, however the Germans and Russians are now occupied in a war that we probably don't want to get too involved with (some pillage and worker stealing with Chariots, but we don't have the production power or tech to really go to war yet).
I think the settlers should fill in some holes before anyone else gets any ideas. There are two wheat that can't be reached by any of our cities, so even though we'd have limited growth terrain, we can build there now and be good for growth (crank out a few workers).
I love Frederick, heh. I went into talks with him, just to get him happy (was annoyed at the time) so that he wouldn't attack us. I gave him 10 gold, and he became cautious. I realized that I had writing, so I established an embassy, and talked to him again. I lined up Alliance, and the trade looks good. I add Masonry, and the trade looks good. I thought about adding gold, but thought that I shouldn't hamstring him in the battle vs Russian (since he is lagging a little).
* Does giving a 'nice' trade provide attitude adjustment? I could have added some gold to the trade, but didn't do so. Is Frederick happier for that, or does it not matter (ie should I wring every doller out)?
Captain Ludd Nov 27, 2001, 12:30 AM So things are heating up on our little lot of land! (oh no...not a war!:p )
As for nice trades...I recall reading somewhere in the manual that not pressing for too much will endear you to other leaders. But since the manual may or may not be accurate...I really don't know for certain.
And for some reason (keep in mind this is my first succession game) I find myself really concerned with Nottingham (the one town I founded...the only good thing I accomplished:king: ). Sort of a paternal sense. More so then in a solo game. Funny eh?
So who's next?
Little Raven Nov 28, 2001, 11:50 AM Zoidberg is next, though he only has about a day left. I'll shoot him an email. Then comes Urkneal, then Ilspana, then me! Ah, to watch our little empire grow...
Jingham, it looks like you did a smash up job! The loss of the warrior was unfortunate, but these things happen.
Man, what I could have done with a little omniscience at the beginning of the game. If I had placed London a little better with respect to those two wheat you mentioned, we could have had a settler factory going from day one. I didn't know they were there, honest! :)
Keep up the good work, gentlemen!
Little Raven Nov 28, 2001, 09:43 PM Ok, Zoidberg emailed me and told me he was on the job. I'm not sure why he's so forum-shy, but at least things should be moving again. Once he posts his turn, it will be up to Urkneal to carry us forward into history...
Zoidberg Nov 29, 2001, 04:07 PM Finally i rise to power:
Murdering the former despot and his family so i become queen elizabeth.
Me, a man, dressed like a fag pretending to be a queen is now the only free person in the entire english despotism.
Realizing we have no army to fight the these russian bastards in the norh i am in a difficult position.
Shall i built an army or just try to get my share of the cake. i know i can't count on the germans to do all the work for me.
Still in the early stages of development we must claim as much land our own as possible so i decided not to built a city near london now, but sending the settlers to another location.
I`ll be expansionist.
Our real enemies are not the russians: the germans are. they often act aggressively and expansionist and they are close
plus many resources are located around leipzig and berlin. we should approach there whenever possible so i try to cut off some of their cultural influence while forcing the
russian people into supporting our cause by paying tribute.
the people expand my palace for that.
During my time in charge i realized that Hastings is growing fast and is good for some serious production.
by the time i will be overthrown by the next player most of the cities are ordered to build temples. WE NEED CULTURE, maybe the people of leipzig will depose, if not... we have to take it by force.
Feel free to change the production of temples at any time (maybe to build an army that kicks the germans ass.)
Another problem may be the jungle around london that will strike us with disease so i kept it small.
Oh, the germans are building the pyramids, maybe at berlin which is still a one-citizen village.
yes, i turned off the governor, he sucks ass, it's a lil bit more work to point at every resource manually, but it's worth it.
here's what i have done in detail:
1500 london produces settler and london's cultural influence expands, ordered to build temple, changed spearman to worker, need to irrigate york, it is not growing
1475 york produces worker, builds granary, our archer was attacked from minsk taking no damage. hastings is ordered to build archer.
1450 building irragation near hastings, hastings builds chariot, scouts distract warriors, york builds worker, WE MUST IRRIGATE LAND!
1425 building irrgation near hastings moving settler and leading the russian warrior directly to into german arms while watching from a mountain top.
1400 just moving.
1375 founding kalashnikov gaining acces to a gold mountain and resources on a smaller mountain while cutting german influence.
1350 near canterbury germans are moving settler and spearman south. london gets gems, expanding palace, troops approach moscow
1325 russian scout appears deep south, our forces are pillaging improvements near moscow.
1300 discovering iron working, researching philosophy to get republic, pillaging improvements near moscow.
signing peace treaty for a worker, 27 gold and 1 gold per turn.
1275 rampaging barbarian destroy the russian scout in the south forcing our scout to flee from the mountain top into german territory.
1250 nottingham builds settlers.
1225 russia fights back german forces at kiev. i am moving our forces back home.
1200 york builds spearman. the germans are contacting us and forcing us to leave their territory our scout moves automatically directly into the barabarian horseman. he's lost.
1175 our armies are falling back. the germans defeat the barbarians in the south and found königsberg.
1150 just moving. our armies are falling back.
1125 founding coventry to secure iron resource and mabye getting a share of leipzigs resources when culture expands therefore: buliding temple.
1100 discovering philosophy and i decide to go for republic though it'll take some time. feel free to change it, but i am convinced a new form of government will boost our civilization.
canterbury builds spearman. sending out warrior near london. irrigating land.
1075 just moving.
1050 sending out settler to built a new home in the fertile land near london.
oh... Little Raven are you sure the english people came from outer space while not knowing how to read and write?!
my guess is they merely emerged from an of offspread of the great-more-or-less-intelligent-leaf-of-cabbage-out-of-the-jungle, but i have no proof (yet).
at least it's what they eat.
about me being "forum shy": i hate cookies. have to kill my firewall and reset ie settings to be able to post which is a pain in the ass. the civfanatics php system is nice but too overloaded to run quickly and accurate on my machine.
i hope to be on in the next days to comment your turns ehehehe.
Lead the british empire to glory!

Little Raven Nov 30, 2001, 11:15 PM Urkneal, are you there? Unfortunately I can't send him an email. If he doesn't show up tomorrow, we need to move on. Ilspana, are you up for it? Or should I take over once again?
Ilspana Dec 01, 2001, 01:54 AM I think i can handle the three day deadline. I'll get started upon your prompting me.
ukrneal Dec 01, 2001, 03:54 AM Pass me this time around. I had to suddenly do some travelling and while I have access, I can't download or upload - unless I want to be online for hours. Get me next time around.
Little Raven Dec 02, 2001, 01:46 PM Take it away, Ilspana!
Little Raven Dec 04, 2001, 10:23 AM Still there, Ilspana?
Ilspana Dec 04, 2001, 03:52 PM I finished my turn but havent written anything yet. I'll have soemthing done tommorow. ALso, i wont be using the chronological format we've been doing all along as its getting pretty cumbersome and boring to write it like that. I will write it in an essay form and put down important dates. My rule was pretty uneventful with a few exceptional events.
Ilspana Dec 05, 2001, 08:20 PM DAMNIT!!! i just wrote five paragraphs and when i press the post button it tells me the file I attached was too big. Then i go back and everything is gone.
Nevermind this. count me out. My turn probably would've ruined the game anyway.
Little Raven Dec 05, 2001, 11:02 PM Geez, that bad eh?
Well, I guess it's me next. I'm on it. Expect something tomorrow night.
Ilspana Dec 05, 2001, 11:10 PM Well it wasnt disastrous, but it would've made things interesting for you guys. I got myself into a war with russia toward the end of my turn because she refused to leave my borders immediately. So i enslaved her settlers and killed her spearman.
I'm mostly angry about the loss of my post, though, because there were a few funny tidbits in it. For example, my assasinating the cross-dressing king's family line and then adopting his form of dress and the moniker of Elizabeth so the people would recognise me as the ruler of England. But once you lose a good post it's hard to get the will to re-write it.
Little Raven Dec 16, 2001, 01:58 PM Guys, I cannot apologize enough for my prolonged abscence. I'm lucky enough to have a job that isn't too demanding, except at certian times. Well, we hit one of those times, and since I just changed departments, I didn't really have much warning. I'm so sorry I disappeared on you guys like that. Hopefully, we can still carry this game forward.
And for future reference, if (and hopefully this won't happen again) you don't hear from me within 72 hours, please feel free to skip me and go on. I won't be offended, promise.
And now, without further ado, my post...

Excerpt from Donald Henley’s “From Cub to Hunter: An analysis of the growth of the English Empire”
--------------------------------------
The reign of Raven the Second is a particularly interesting time to historians because of the remarkable cultural achievements the English saw under his rule. Like his namesake, Raven the First, Raven the Second was a builder. In fact, the army expanded virtually not at all under his hand. Fanatical when it came to infrastructure, Raven greatly expanded the core of Imperial Engineers, and often spoke of his great dream: to see all the cities of the Empire connected by a standard road system. Unfortunately, he died before seeing this dream a reality, but so intense were his efforts only a few short years after his passing, the final road would be laid to Coventry. He also founded the city of Warwick on the flood plains of the Tames, and continued to seek peaceful relationships with his neighbors. He also launched two amazing projects, the Pyramids in London, and the Colossus at York. Death claimed him long before he could see either of these projects even halfway to completion, but history must remember him as the initiator.
But what truly sets Raven the Second apart is the virtually every city in the Empire gained a temple during his rule. The cultural growth experienced under his hand is truly amazing even today. The people of the countryside flocked to the English banner, and thousands of square miles fell under English jurisdiction. So intense was the cultural assault that valuable incense was claimed from the Germans near Coventry! Given all he has left behind, it is tempting to remember the reign of Raven the Second as a golden age for the English, where art blossomed and the people triumphed under a glorious ruler.
But the truth is far darker. Raven the Second was, in fact, a vicious tyrant who never strayed far from his whip. The glorious buttresses that even now enchant visitors at Nottingham are build above the mass graves of the wretches that Raven used up laying the foundation. It is estimated that 2000 men died in the construction of the Dome at Warwick. And at Kalashnikov, where the spires of the Rhandan reach towards the heaven, the occasional bone cache is still discovered by restoration crews. History judges Raven the Second fondly, and it must be said that the Empire emerged from his rule stronger than ever before, but it is important to remember the name he was given by the guilds of Hastings: aedificator amensentis; the Mad Builder.

Little Raven Dec 16, 2001, 02:05 PM Ok, Captain Ludd, it's all you. At this point, things are looking way up. Our military is a little weaker than our neighbors, but in every other way we're kicking their tail. Try to claim the insence as quickly as you can, that'll help offset all the people I ticked off building temples. ;)
Corruption is going to start being a problem real soon here. Actually, it already is, which is why I was killing so many people. Hope you have some creative solutions.
Good luck, Ludd, here's the game.
Captain Ludd Dec 16, 2001, 06:00 PM Just letting you know that I'm here and grabbed the saved game for my turn. I would expect to be able to post my turn by late tuesday night judging by my schedule.
And are we allowed to name cities whatever we like? (this is my first group game) I didn't know what the ettiquate is.
Hmmmm...Luddingham sounds nice ;)
As an after thought...I'm in a solo game right now that might be the most interesting civ game I've ever played. One of those games that you could actually see as making sense in a realistic sort of way. A long running feud with a neighbor. A tense border with another power. Capturing a few key cities from backwater nations.
Time to run :king:
Little Raven Dec 16, 2001, 06:05 PM You can name/rename cities whatever and whenever you like. Heck, Stalin did it, why not you? ;)
I'm glad we're getting the game rolling again.
Captain Ludd Dec 19, 2001, 09:20 PM Ludd II rose to power during a period of stability and reigned in a quiet conservative manner. For this he has been forgotten by most today. Let us take a look at a few of the highlights of the man they would can "The Despot of Knowledge".
He began by stepping lightly, contunueing the work of his predecessor Raven II. In 490bc the Imperial road was finally completed. It connected every existing town in the realm for reasons of defence and commerce.
Halfwayt through his rule he took his only bold action which would in part give him the name we know him by to this day. After watching his coffers grow he entered into negotiations with the German leader and exchanged a total of 250 units of gold for the secrets of both mysticism and map-making. His adviser had told him that the German Lord would find this "acceptable" whereas a lower amount may have been deemed "insulting".
Ludd II later encountered disappointment when it was reported that Slamanca, a far off and no doubt backward village had built "the great pryamids". Work at London was switched to the "Oracle". Ludd II was heard to say "I see how that may be of use to us in the future". This scheme would also falter as at the very end of his days another far off city built this "Oracle". Ludd II did not see that coming. Whoever was to follow him would have to decide right away what London would switch production to.
Ludd II also had a road built to the German capital of Berlin. It is hoped that this may facilitate trade between the two peoples in the future.
Luddingham was also founded in 310bc. A fine town that will one day enjoy the riches of a gold mine built close-by. It was provided by a garrison of spearmen built by another town as a welcoming gift.
In the closing days the concept of "Republican Government" was disovered. Ludd II considered switching to this form of administration but then wavered from the idea unwilling to commit to such a step. Instead he increased the amount being spent on research and tasked his people to the idea of literature. He hoped that one day England should brighten the world with her grace and knowledge.
He died peacefully in his sleep in 170bc. Rumous circulated that he was assasinated by factions eager for revolution. We are unable to comment further on this at this time.
Sorry I was late boys...gift shopping and all of that. Remember that the next person will have to switch Londons production before the computer decides to. Let's build England up while the Germans and Russians bleed each other :p
Little Raven Dec 19, 2001, 09:47 PM Sounds like we're doing just fine. Bummer about London, but there really wasn't much you could do. Win some, loose some, I guess.
Ok, Ilspana, Jhigham, whichever one of you grabs the game first gets to go. Post a message as soon as you get it!
Captain Ludd Dec 20, 2001, 12:38 AM yeah it is to bad we couldn't get a wonder going there...but worse still there's nothing really to change production too. I hate to see it shift to something trivial and have all those beautiful shields go to waste
