I am highly addicted to Civ III. I have heard the phrase "Just one more turn..." and you end up spending 20 more turns. Mine is more like "Just 20 more turns...." so you can imagine what kind of exponential that leads too.

One thing that drives me bonkers, that I've yet to figure out is this:

The uber-production mode that a civ goes into when I begin conquering them. How do they swarm me with units? is that an AI trick or what?

I am playing the Civ III conquests Middle Ages scenario, which I dearly love. I move down to crush the Burgundians, who have half the cities I do, and some how they can produce twice as many units, their cities are garrisoned with 5 units each (while I can barely afford to field an army and two units per city).

The reason may have to do with the difficulty level, or maybe they have been building military for a long time.

Again, I will not waste space by putting useless junk in the otherwise white space.

Also, Computers are known to be Draft-Happy.

Sometimes the AIs make themselves go bankrupt by building to many units. Usually, that is why they have 0 gold, I would assume.

what about the computer not managing tech/money every turn?

i dont see how computer build A LOT of units.. usually they get more cites than me and fankly they need the extras... but 2-3 every city max so far i see.

but you can adjust money spent every turn if you feel like it. i feel the comp. doesnt always do that. or do they?

They do, but they manage it wrong. The computer isn't human.

In higher levels (above Monarch, beleive), computers get a production bonus (their units take less shields to build than for you) and research bonus. Even higher and they start with extra units and settelers.

But if you are just wondering why they have so many defenders, computers just Rush Production a lot. They don't care about the countereffects.

Well, on Monarch the AI is on even terms with you, on Emperor it only pays 80%, I do not know how much the discount is on Deity. It also gets extra starting units and so on. But the extra units are only for normal epic games, so I do not know why they have so many units in the Middle Ages scenario. They start out with some units even there right from the beginning, and well, they might built a lot of military units instead of inftrastructure.

Longasc,

I think that Monarch gives the computer a 10% advantage. Regent is an even game.

Each level up has a 10% greater production advantage. Emperor is 20%, demi-god is 30%, etc. Also, the computer hasd a LOT of other advantages as the difficulty increases.

The AI on high levels seem to build a lot of military units, but as everyone says, they don't use them well. Generally, the better use of military units seems to be the human player's biggest advantage.

They wouldn't be so bad if they had a better offensive:defensive unit ratio.
As it is now, the AI builds too many defensive units that they just stick in the cities that don't need protection (in the middle of their empire).
I usually play with all AI, defensive unit 'build often' preferences unchecked. It helps. A little...
