View Full Version : Revised Gobal Rankings
AlanH Jul 28, 2004, 03:32 PM Well, I finally made it. The revised Global Rankings are now available here (http://gotm.civfanatics.net/rankings/global.php).
There's an explanation of the way we have integrated Classic and C3C game performances at the top of the page, so I won't repeat it here. Please check it out, and feel free to come back to discuss it here. I'm sure the debate will, as always, be lively and thoughtful ;)
And Sam'll be relieved to know that, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't find a way to get my ranking higher than his :D
Tarkeel Jul 28, 2004, 03:48 PM gptm/civfanatics.net? ;)
AlanH Jul 28, 2004, 03:51 PM :mischief: Just testing :mischief: Someone's listening out there ;)
solenoozerec Jul 28, 2004, 03:51 PM link doesn't work, there is a syntax error in URL, you need to substitute "gptm/civfanatics.net..." with "gotm.civfanatics.net..."
AlanH Jul 28, 2004, 03:55 PM I did ......
Bolka Jul 28, 2004, 04:13 PM I don't understand why CotM01 paired with GotM31, C3C wasn't available when GotM31 was current, and GotM32 came out 1.5 month after GotM31... It should have paired with GotM32.
Gah, you just paired my 2 best games.... :-(
AlanH Jul 28, 2004, 04:28 PM The pairings move along every two weeks. The pairing arrangement is the only way I could work it so that there's always a Classic and a C3C game at the same Age level. If you select GOTM 32 as the latest game then COTM 1 pairs with GOTM 32
Sandman2003 Jul 28, 2004, 04:43 PM Nice job, well done.
Randy Jul 28, 2004, 05:22 PM AlanH,
I played COTM 01 & 02 + GOTM 32 & 33 but I could not find my rank. I submitted my game as Randy.
I found my rank in the old format I think I was #172.
Edit: COTM 01 I was #169.
GOTM 32 I was # 72
AlanH Jul 28, 2004, 05:33 PM Did you enter your name in the search field? I did ;)
COTM2 and GOTM 33 haven't been scored yet, so your other two games are paired and only one counts.
samildanach Jul 28, 2004, 06:22 PM And Sam'll be relieved to know that, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't find a way to get my ranking higher than his :D
:smug: ;)
It looks good. I take it the spreadsheet will take account of the differing decays and select which score is highest in the future. What are the decays for C3C? I remember either you or Ainwood saying that C3Cdiety does not correspond to classic diety is this true of the other levels as well?
Randy Jul 28, 2004, 06:22 PM Ok, The first time I did it I used Upper case R
This time I did lower case r and it worked.
thanks Randy.
wow adding the low score COTM took me down some. As you can see I'm much better at PtW.
Dianthus Jul 28, 2004, 06:27 PM Well, I finally made it. The revised Global Rankings are now available here (http://gotm.civfanatics.net/rankings/global.php).
Thanks AlanH, thats cool . (It's also interesting ;)).
ainwood Jul 28, 2004, 06:30 PM :smug: ;)

I remember either you or Ainwood saying that C3Cdiety does not correspond to classic diety is this true of the other levels as well?We did away with decays based on difficulty, which removes this issue completely. :)
bradleyfeanor Jul 28, 2004, 06:32 PM I don't know how you get as much done as you do Alan, but thank you very much! :goodjob: I am glad you chose to go with the best score, as that will allow us to be a little more creative on the second game when we have the time to play both. It would have been nice to keep the amortization based on difficulty, but I can see how that would pose problems.
I am confused on one thing (which is nice, because usually I am confused by many, many things): when I look at my rank for GOTM32, I am ranked 64 because COTM1 pairs with GOTM32. When I look at COTM1, however, I am ranked 112 because COTM1 switches to be paired with GOTM31. Does this mean that the pairing will switch every two weeks, and the highest scoring game of the pair redetermined?
Thanks again for all your great work Alan!

From the text on the GR page:
Since the game pair in any month may have different difficulty levels we have decided to use a standard nine month aging period for all games.
samildanach Jul 28, 2004, 06:46 PM We did away with decays based on difficulty, which removes this issue completely. :)
Yup. I didn't read it did I? :) I was trying extra hard on the classics in the hope off getting an advantage on the GPR through longer half-lifes :) . Alan is far too honest - it wouldn't have been fair to keep the decays as they were
AlanH Jul 28, 2004, 07:00 PM when I look at my rank for GOTM32, I am ranked 64 because COTM1 pairs with GOTM32. When I look at COTM1, however, I am ranked 112 because COTM1 switches to be paired with GOTM31. Does this mean that the pairing will switch every two weeks, and the highest scoring game of the pair redetermined?
That's correct. This way we can update the rankings every time we release a set of results instead of updating every two games. It's true that your ranking will oscillate because your GOTM 31 will alternately be included or excluded. The oscillation range will reduce as it ages. To compare like with like you'll have to use alternate rankings. The ones published after each Classic game will obviously give you the higher score.
AlanH Jul 28, 2004, 07:02 PM Ok, The first time I did it I used Upper case R
This time I did lower case r and it worked. Thanks for picking that up. I've fixed it to be case-insensitive now. One bug down ... how many to go?
civ_steve Jul 28, 2004, 07:20 PM Great Job as always, AlanH! These input forms and displays are impressive!
Randy Jul 28, 2004, 08:03 PM ooh, I've never found a bug before!
leif erikson Jul 28, 2004, 09:39 PM As always, excellent job Alan.
Neat, clean and easy to understand!! Doesn't get any better than that. :salute:
Now, if we could only win a succession game!?!? :crazyeye:
akots Jul 28, 2004, 11:28 PM :goodjob:
How the GOTM-COTM survived without you in the previous life... don't really know.
:goodjob:
AlanH Jul 30, 2004, 05:15 PM ooh, I've never found a bug before!
You win a major prize ... just as soon as I can think of an appropriate one :mischief:
Darkness Aug 02, 2004, 05:38 AM Great job Alan! It looks really good... :goodjob:
alamo Aug 06, 2004, 02:37 PM Cool - I'm near the top...of page 2!
A nice script. Now if we only had remedial games...
samildanach Aug 14, 2004, 05:03 PM Why are the COTM1 scores not included in the GPR now? I noticed because my ranking went up a place.
AlanH Aug 14, 2004, 05:12 PM  Sam's gone up a place! Can't have that
Your plea for justice has been answered. I've fixed it, and you are restored to your rightful place in the pecking order.
Thanks ;)
samildanach Aug 14, 2004, 05:35 PM  Sam's gone up a place! Can't have that
Now if it had been thirty places.......
