View Full Version : DG Website
GeZe Jul 29, 2004, 02:47 PM Current Website (http://demogame.civfanatics.net/civ3/html/index.html)
1. The site is out of date
2. The design is ugly
3. It is not up to the coding standerds
4. Nobody uses it
What should we do about it?
I might be willing to redesign.

1. It is out of date.
2. I don't think it is "ugly".
3. Haven't got a clue.
4. I used it.
Black_Hole Jul 29, 2004, 02:54 PM well its form dg3, so it very out of date... its not that ugly, but i havent used it since it was out of date
GeZe Jul 29, 2004, 03:10 PM do we need the website, when almost everything can be done on the forums?
Inkstier Jul 30, 2004, 12:52 AM The site has a lot of information about the history of the DG for newbies to check out, I'm a newbie and I learned some stuff from checking out that site. Not to mention the link to it is directly on the mainpage of Civ Fanatics therefore it's getting attention by those means. In fact, that's where I first discovered that this game even existed, I had perused the forums before but I never really paid enough attention to realize the game existed.
Cyc Jul 30, 2004, 01:06 AM I like it. Especially the Demogame 1 History. ;)
If you're considering anything, contact Fionn before you develop that thought much.
And yes, we need a website.
Inkstier Jul 30, 2004, 02:00 AM I couldn't agree more Cyc, I don't know if it's completely a necessity but I mean who the hell is it hurting?
Chieftess Jul 30, 2004, 05:28 AM I was the origanal developer of it, so I can tip my hand in again if you want.
FionnMcCumhall Jul 31, 2004, 12:23 AM the person who said it was ugly should be careful what they say when the developer is part of the game. Im working on a redesign of the site. As i told OCt X about the site, i can continue to do this site but i need a team of people who are willing to work to help me update the site each time we have a TC and when we add new provinces. Mapmakers and someone needs to be able to write up reports so i can post them up ( ie news items. )
MSTK Jul 31, 2004, 12:48 AM Well, I'm "official" cartographer, but I will be away until the 19th.
Yes, I love weaing that title. Don't break me :(
Chieftess Jul 31, 2004, 06:51 AM I also have a file upload system that I'm going to rework for the demogame webpage so that we can upload files there.
Reason? Every once in awhile, Thunderfall deletes files and forgets not to delete ones wtih "DG#" at the front of the filename...
MSTK Jul 31, 2004, 10:35 AM Yeah, I know that  Some of the DG4 files, even, are now corrupt.
Coinich Aug 04, 2004, 08:38 AM I found the site incredibly useful and it really helped not to have to search the forums to find info - especially for a newbie like me. Please please please - make the site for DG5. :D
Arigato :hatsoff:
Espírito Aug 04, 2004, 09:06 AM I tried to find the site useful but all the info was outdated so I had to go onto IRC, please update the site, because its a lasting testimony to our not inconsiderable efforts to force stupid players to vote the irght way (j/k)
FionnMcCumhall Aug 08, 2004, 04:31 PM ok here we go a new look to the dg website. middle info not added because we need to decide what goes there.
truckingpete Aug 08, 2004, 06:00 PM very nice..:D
Comnenus Aug 08, 2004, 08:00 PM That's a nice, clean look. What does the writing at the top translate to?
FionnMcCumhall Aug 08, 2004, 10:27 PM civilization 3: democracy game
:)
Cheetah Aug 09, 2004, 05:03 AM It's great! :D
Real Pave Aug 09, 2004, 05:21 AM Fantastic! :D
Ankka Aug 09, 2004, 06:00 AM Very nice, Webmaster McCumhall.
*bows*
Cyc Aug 09, 2004, 08:52 AM ok here we go a new look to the dg website. middle info not added because we need to decide what goes there.
I believe that screen shots with narrative should take up the bulk of it, but we should also have a list/narrative block for "WHAT'S HOT!". This block could hold links and/or info on such things as current Constitutional/CoL polls.
FionnMcCumhall Aug 11, 2004, 07:35 PM keep in mind cyc a map center should be up or at least an importnat link to it directed to the forums
GeZe Aug 12, 2004, 02:22 PM Hows this?
Red is the main colour as it is Japan's colour. The other colour makes colour harmony with the red.
EDIT: How the nav would work: when you hover over the nav text, the navagation would slide out horizontaly.

msz4 Aug 12, 2004, 03:55 PM Praesent dapibus, magna nec carsus ullamcorper, leo neque egestas odio, non blandit quam quam et messa... :crazyeye:
what is it mean?
GeZe Aug 12, 2004, 04:12 PM Oh, thats dummy text. It means nothing yet, to the eye, looks like English. http://www.lipsum.com/
EDIT: Oh, do you like the design?
FionnMcCumhall Aug 12, 2004, 05:49 PM where in the blue heack did you learn to designa website, that is so darn plain and has nothing to do with japan. at least mine is themed on it. Thats me being nice. while its very clean and medical like. its graphically challenged.
Chieftess Aug 12, 2004, 06:16 PM @msz4 - That's one of the preview settings that I think Dreamweaver uses. The "latin" is a placeholder.
@Fionn - Tone it down a bit. Not everyone is a great (or professional) web designer. It would be better to say, "It looks nice, but maybe you can try this..." without resorting to flaming.
truckingpete Aug 12, 2004, 09:25 PM All I know is basic HTML, I taught it myself.....its been awhile since I made a website....

Sorry, I didn't mean to step on your territory. I just had an idea and drew it up in Paint. I am going to post a redone version Monday addressing the "sterile" and "theme" issues. I advocate "clean" design, written mainly with CSS, as it has faster loading times, better user usibility and I like how it looks better then graphic heavy designs.
It is interesting that this was your response after what you said earlier in the thread:
the person who said it was ugly should be careful what they say when the developer is part of the game.
If you still have a grudge against me becuase of my earlier comments, I am sorry, I did not know that designer was part of the community. If I knew you where part of the community I would not have told you that I found your designs were ugly. Please forgive me.
Happy designing!
msz4 Aug 13, 2004, 12:52 AM @GeZe Your project is simple. Most of simple ideas are the best. But I thint that your design is too simple
FionnMcCumhall Aug 13, 2004, 10:45 AM i apologize, you caught me on a bad day. A little constructive criticism. you can have a graphical diplay with CSS as much as having a sterile design much like you had for more info go to cssZenGarden.com. you middle idea is very good tho, and seeing as how with my being in school it would make sense for you to be on the design team to help me update the site. perhaps you can focus on developing the supporting pages. My main index page is still in development as i still need to some minor tweeking to the menu's and such
Babbler Aug 13, 2004, 03:45 PM There should be a website for the present demogames (civII and CivIII), as well as a history (in fancy RPG-style writing, of course) of all past demogames.
