View Full Version : Suggestion: Consolidating rules info
DaveShack Aug 01, 2004, 10:08 AM A new player was asking a question in the #civfanatics chat room, about GOTM rules. He was having trouble locating the actual list of exploits and cheats not allowed, and also missed the basic rules located on the GOTM website. (http://gotm.civfanatics.net/gen/1st_visit.shtml)
Maybe it's time to consolidate all the places that rules are stated into a concise sticky thread. Also that webpage is downlevel, it still mentions PTW patch level 1.14 and we're at 1.27.
AlanH Aug 01, 2004, 11:50 AM Civ_steve's excellent GOTM Reference Thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=71788) is stickied in the main forum. It should really be your starting point for all questions relating to the GOTM. It includes lots of useful links, including one to Ainwood's most recent summary (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=73719) of the rules and general code of conduct. That post includes a section on exploits that points to the permitted and prohibited exploit list (http://gotm.civfanatics.net/gen/rules2.shtml).
ainwood Aug 01, 2004, 02:00 PM Its a good point though. When the website revolution comes, its something we should do. :)
Longasc Aug 02, 2004, 05:01 AM Hi, I was the player that asked about the rules.
I will participate out of competition this month, because I scouted the area for quite some turns and well, I finally got to the conclusion that this violated the spirit of GOTM. ;)
Still looking forward to see how people placed their initial cities.
But well, back to topic:
The RULES are basically a hyperlink IN THE TEXT.
I read the text, but cursory... blablabla... where are the rules. I really did not see them until DaveShack told me the same page I was just looking at, then I noticed, aah, there is a link.
It would be beneficial if the rules would have a section in the sidebar. And even if it is considered to be reasonable, part of the rules (no reloading or going back to older saves) is not in the rules but in the preface before the link to the rules.
civ steve's thread is surely great, but the rules and such stuff should be located on the "Your First Visit to the land of GOTM", this is where I started at least - and this it what this page is intended for.
This would make things easier, more logically organized, and the best thing, it is not really much work either! :)

I agrtee with that. Its a case of how the game has more evolved over time than been set up initially. cracker spent a heck of a lot of time setting up the website initially, but then with all the other commitments he had, he didn't have time to maintain it to the perfect detail, and I haven't either. We will improve though!
AlanH Aug 02, 2004, 04:45 PM I've updated the 1st Visit page. Let me know if you think this helps ...
Longasc Aug 02, 2004, 04:55 PM General Rules... yes, this is better. :goodjob:
