1-Natural Disasters-Obvisouly this has been stated many times before, but I have a comprehensive list of natural disasters and their effects set up. They're not too overbalanced, but they're not too underbalanced either. ;) Also, in the world setup screen, create an option of the frequency of natural disasters. You couldn't switch them off completely, but to suit different personal preferences you could have a Calm World, a Normal World, or a Violent World.

2-More world setup options-Make an option in the game setup screen to adjust the amount of resources on the map. You could make it High, Medium, or Low resources to add more variety. Playing on Low would be interesting, because there'd be more competition for resources. Also, be able to adjust the number of offshore islands. I hate the fact that almost no Pangea map ever has offshore islands.

3-Tourism-You could set up certain tiles as a tourist destination. If you click on it it could list its tourist potential. Forests, beaches, strange desert terrain, mountains, edges of jungles, etc could have more tourist potential. To create a tourist tile though, you would have to have some certain technology. A tourist site would generate a steady amount of income into your treasury with no negative effects. The more sophisticated the government, the higher its tourist potential, and the longer its been a tourist site, the more income it generates. However, if you're at war or if a specific tourist site is near a warzone the income generated from this will drop dramatically. Also, with wonders, the more spectacular the wonder the more tourist potential it has. If the wonder goes obsolete, there is a huge boost in the amount of income it generates. One last thing. If you declare like a forest or jungle tile a tourist site and then chop it down, it will have negative effects by making the people in your empire (especially in nearby cities) unhappy.

4-Negative effects for chopping down too many trees-If you chop down too many trees and jungles it accelerates the pace of global warming. THis has been suggested before and I'm suggesting it again. Also, global warming could be even worse, by not only drying up tiles but also flooding coastal squares. It would have a better chance of flooding marshes, deltas, deserts, insthmuses, flood plains, and plains squares, but would never flood a hill or mountain square. Also, if you're really unlucky, it could possibly flood your city or cut off your city and make it an island. If the city is flooded it may or may not disband and if it disbands it may or may not create a settler. Also, tone down the global warming effect of pollution. EDIT: Also, have the option to toggle global warming on or off.

5-Slight climate shifts-And by slight I do mean slight. Slightly drier climate periods will transform a few plains squares into deserts and grassland squares into plains squares. If it lasts a long time it might kill a citizen or two due to dehydration and may also slightly ruin food production. Slightly colder periods would see an increase in tundra and a decrease in food and possibly production as well. Slightly wetter periods would increase food but would also cause more floods, mudslides, and flash floods (a few natural disaster ideas that I have). Slightly warmer periods would have do nothing except maybe dry up plains tiles (just plains tiles).

6-More pronounced polar caps-I hate the fact that it just has the ice at the top. Maybe they should extend the ice. Although I'm not one for spherical maps it might be necessary for more pronounced polar caps. :p If you REALLY want to break the ice (like its strung between islands or something) then you could build icebreakers, but whether that would be costworthy or not is questionable. Also, the ice could melt during slightlywarmer periods, and it would melt much faster during global warming periods.

Well, hope you like these ideas, and please comment on them. This forum is full of debate and this should add more. I will think of more as I go along but starting tomorrow night I'll be gone for four days. Feel free to point out anything that should be done differently in these above ideas. :p

I liked the way continents could connect to the polar ice in Civ II. While it wasn't very realistic for a unit to walk across the polar ice, find another continent, and then make a new city, it certainly did put a different spin on exploration. In Civ III the top and bottom few rows of tiles might as well not exist since they are completely useless unless you mod the game.
