Sniper
:sniper:

This is a general sniper for use in the Industrial or Modern Ages.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/SniperPreview.gif

Credit:
The original unit creation was by Balou as a UN Peacekeeper (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=54319), later modified by dog to be more of a Special Ops (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=54319&page=3&pp=20) [post #48] unit, and finally modified much further - to this final creation: the Sniper.

Files:
Included are animations for attack, death, default, fortify, and run. Sound files include attack, death, fortify, and move. The remaining files are the INI & unit_32 files.

Unzip the files into your [..\art\units\] folder.

Edit: New Sniper zip now contains the additional work done by Vuldacon, including tweaked sound & ini files, as well as several unit icons.

Basic download removed after 1337 downloads.

Great! What about the suggested stats and skills?

aaglo
Aug 04, 2004, 03:24 AM
I'd say
Attack=5 (large guns, not suitable for attacking fortifications ect.)
Defence=8..10 (allways hiding in the most peculiar places)
Move=2 (this could be also 1)
Bombard=6 (representing 'stealthy' attack)
Range=1 (duh!)
RateOfFire=1 (to make it not too powerful)
Stealth attack-ability (the low attack does not make it too powerful)

Costs a bit more than infantry

Follow the link that Kulade posted above - it's a great tutorial. All the files you need are included in the zip, but there are a couple that I haven't figured out how to create yet (icons). They aren't needed to use the unit, but are rather just 'eye candy' in various menus of the Civ game. I'll add them later.

This is a Superb Unit sourboy...Love your modifications  BTW, are there Large and Small .pcx files anywhere?

sourboy
Aug 10, 2004, 02:38 PM
I've been looking for a good one, but have not found anything yet. If you or anyone else should recommend one - I can definately adjust the size or any other aspect if needed. In the meantime, maybe use the smart weapons crosshairs? You know, I think I'll put a request in with one of the icon makers.

Here are the Large and Small .pcx Icons and units_32.pcx icon For the Sniper unit by sourboy.

I Modified "Half-Life" Crosshairs and the "Modern Infantry" Unit by Balou to create these Large and Small pcx files.
...note that some detail is lost with the Small Icon due to size but hope it will suffice.
...I moved the Snipers legs together more to look better (IMO) for the units_32.pcx Icon.

Hope these will work for you until better ones can be made.

Glad you approve sourboy...just wanted to provide some Icons that could be used for your Sniper and I didn't really want to use plain Crosshairs for them.

Perhaps using the Scope with Crosshairs alone would work for the Tech Tree?
Here is a preview of a slightly lighter grey area with Crosshairs alone:

Most people agree on Stealth Attack & bombard (1 rate of fire). As far as a/d/m - that's up to you, based on what timeline you place it in. I would think something with a fair attack, good defense, and minimal movement. Maybe 8/12/1 with 6 bombard (1 range, 1 rate of fire), Stealth Attack, Ranged Animation, Lethal Land Bombardment? I personally plan to use it in a way that minimizes the number of these units. Either 4 per city, like Armies or auto-produced from a building (1 per four+ turns). Up to you - I haven't had time to play a game with it yet.

Hey sourboy. Let me say I love this unit. I use it for special forces :-D. I was just wondering if you'd be able to make up a paradrop animation for it, or have anything that can approximate better than the white, generic paradrop anim i'm using now.

sourboy, I have modified the Fortify and Move sounds for the Sniper to fit the unit timing in the game better. Also changed the .ini speed to 200 in order to slow the game speed for the sniper a little more. All game tested and although not a hugh change, it works well with the Sniper.

...I agree with crimson238. A paradrop would be a nice addition for the Sniper. IF you like the Camo Green paradrop and paradrop sound I made for the Covert Ops unit by Kindred72, feel free to use it.

here is the small zip for the modified Sniper sounds and .ini :

Sourboy, do you know if there is a way to actually limit unit production to 1 for every 4 cities like the army? The reason I'm asking is because I'd like to do the same thing for the Makou cannons in my FF mod (so that every city doesn't have stacks of 8 makou cannons, despite the 500 shield cost).

BTW, I like your sniper unit, and even though I don't have any immediat uses for it, I've got it earmarked for "future projects."

i guess you could give the unit the army flag
but then it would conflict with existing army units
(8 cities will only support one army and one makou cannons, instead of two of each)

Hikaro Takayama
Nov 25, 2004, 03:13 AM
That would work, since the Makou cannons are almost as powerful as an army (30 def, +1hp and 50 tile bombard range), in terms of defense, and require slightly more shields to build.

Sourboy, do you know if there is a way to actually limit unit production to 1 for every 4 cities like the army?

Another option, which is what I use to limit the Sniper unit (& Covert Ops units) in games, is to make it auto-produced from a small wonder or swap it with the army - and make that auto-produced. That way you can directly regulate their numbers, and reward the limits according to how quickly the tech was discovered & implemented, rather then by cities. This allows more Britian, Germany, Japan style Civs to still have power, not just America, Russia, China types.

Personally, I think it is fine for new people to post about a unit they like.

They were not hear to post when the unit was first introduced and no offence, but it is actually more annoying to view a post that was made just to point a "damning" finger at someone as if they committed a crime when they merely made a nice post about a unit they just found and like.

This is Not a situation where an Older Post was brought back from the "Dead" just to make a post for the sake of gaining a post count.
...There are many others who missed units when they were first posted and they probably appreciate seeing some of them ...besides, the Administrators do a Fine Job and really don't need help "policing" the site :)

by the way...make a few units and see if it "bothers you" when someone likes them enough to post that they do...even if they don't see them until much later than others. :)

People make Posts about older units quite frequently and generally it is ok and doesn't really clutter much at all... CIV III still has a following and I am sure it will for quite some time to come but there are not as many people participating here now and the new people who discover units they like for the first time should be able to post about them.

Perhaps there should be a New Sticky Thread called "Older Unit Graphics Post" where anyone can make a post regarding a thread that is over one month old.

This would accommodate OK posting about Old Threads without Cluttering the Newer Threads. In Fact, it would totally avoid Older Threads mixed in with the New Ones. Then IF someone Posts an Old Thread in the wrong place, they can be informed about the "no no".
I am sure Unit Makers would not object to this :)

I agree with Vuldacon. I would definitely be flattered if someone went back and bumped up one of my "older" units, especially if it is a compliment. I personally wouldn't discourage it at all.

Besides, I agree with Warhead, this is one of my favorite Civ units of all time, next to the Spetsnaz (sp?) unit. When great units like this get bumped, newcomers have a chance to find them a lot easier. otherwise they may never know it's here unless they rummage through the units library with a fine tooth comb.

BTW @ Warhead, have you seen this unit yet, it is truly amazing!

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=37451

It's Balou and Steph's Spetsnaz unit. The previews have long since become defunkt but the download link is still good.

I think it's good to keep alive the old Civ III units and all the great work my predecessors have done. It reminds us all that Civ III is still alive and well. :goodjob:

Dec 08, 2007, 04:53 PM
Well, it wasn't my intention to start any ongoing discussion that is off topic on this Unit Thread. Not sure it can be done easily due to the fact that these older threads were posted here and if anyone makes a post on the same thread, it will be placed in the same area ...unless all threads older than one month are automated to show in a new area.

In any case...here is a Sniper Update I made and added to Escape From Zombie Island for the upcoming Game Update.

I made the Default, Fortify and Run translucent to represent invisible and stealth. Also added a much better Attack.wav with a nice report and a new Death.wav.
These files are the additional/changed files as well as the original files for completeness and simplicity.

Spacer One... In this case there are some new files for the Unit anyway...
More than likely, there will not be an "Old Unit Thread". IF a File is Updated or something new is added...it is ok to post it and as I have said all along, if a New member wants to post something about a Nice unit they were not here to see when it was released...it should be ok as long as it does not get out of hand. So Far this has work well on this Forum. I also want to add that this Forum is not the Most Current anymore so we all are making "new" files for an Older Game. What I am saying is No Worries, we really don't have any problems here. :)
Adding the Date to the Unit Files helps one to know if a Post is Older and most Unit Makers do this now anyway.

The great units never die, they only fade away... then get bumped.

Since the thread lives, I'll post these icons I made for this unit. I modified the icons from the original unit, making the helmet and body armor gray and extending the barrel of the rifle.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v357/WeaselOp/SniperLg.jpg

On the subject of bumping.... personally I find it annoying but don't usually comment unless someone is just being obnoxious. I don't think having a special comment thread would work though, because probably most thread-bumpers find the thread through a search or link instead of just browsing the forum (or just wouldn't realize/care that there is such a thread). Anything automated is bad, because a thread may need to be bumped for various reasons. Something that may be helpful is (if possible on the forum platform) a notice, like the 10-character alert box, that pops up and alerts someone when they are about to post in a thread that has been inactive for over (say) 3 months..
Not that this has ANYTHING to do with the Sniper unit [offtopic]:mischief: so here are the icons:

Listen... this is a Thread for the Sniper Unit and should stay on that subject.
There are some Newer Files for this Unit that were Hacked away and I did not want to start a New Thread for an Older Existing Unit that I simply made some Updates for. Because I wanted to make sure all the Files were available in one package, I uploaded the Update in the Database under Modern Units and Linked it to this Thread. I am certain that sourboy will agree with this.

Therefore, I believe it is ok to post concerning this Unit but PLEASE...after all else that has taken place at the site lately, lets try to be friendly :)

The Moderators do a Good Job of watching the posts at this site and it is their job...Not for anyone else. Quite Frankly, I am most surprised that the Moderators do not normally tend to state this Fact to the "well meaning Members" who try to police the site with posts and images to people regarding Bumps of an Old Thread. Let the moderators Judge when someone has "Bumped" a Thread and needs to be told Publicly.

My "2 cents" is that IF a Bump takes place, let the Moderators deal with it and don't post if you do not like it. That only adds to the continuation of a Bump in many other ways that have nothing to do with the Bump and you just might be wrong...It would be better to PM the Person who Bumped a thread with your views than to Post a Reprimand yourself and become part of the Bump in doing so.

At this point, this Thread is Not a Bump but rather a continuation of a Very Good Unit that has recent files added that had been Hacked away.

No I wasn't being insultive, or threatening you. It's common practice to explain to new people that they shouldn't bump old threads without a purpose. As I already pointed out, it flocks the forum with old threads, and it's impossible to understand what's new and what's old.

@Oz: I think it's time we stopped answering him, it doesn't change anything in his manners (will the red card do?)... and maybe some day he'll do something good for the community (no I didn't mean "leave it"). And the unit is great but we should give credits to Balou at least for anims and overall look.

themanuneed... Post #1 under the Preview: Credit:
The original unit creation was by Balou as a UN Peacekeeper, later modified by dog to be more of a Special Ops [post #48] unit, and finally modified much further - to this final creation: the Sniper.
Then sourboy and I did other things with it as well.

New stuff ? What new stuff
@Vulda: I know :) I was just pointing who should be acclaimed for his great animating skills. Recoloring is another kind of job...

Yes and as I said, this was posted on page 1 in the 1st Post for this Unit. yes, recoloring is a different job...so are sounds, Flc speeds, Large and Small pcx files, CIV Specific colored units 32.pcx files and adjusted .ini files. Animating is a matter of seeing mentally what is correct or wanted then knowing how to have a program do most of the work for you. The Great animators are the Old Guys that use to do everything manually, one frame at a time. The Best animators of today are those who have the best programs and know how to use them.

Sorry T-mun (can I call you that?), I was skimming the posts and I saw Vuldacon's Sniper Update and I though he revamped the animations, instead of stuff for EFZI. (at least that's what I understood)

Why are you guys confused? I stated that this was an update to the Sniper and also stated what those updates are. These are additions for anyone who wants them. Old and New Sniper Files...Not the UN Peacekeeper.
I also stated that I posted the updates on this thread so I could get all files together in one folder. There were many files scattered for this sniper unit and others were lost when the site was hacked.

Balou is Created for the "UN Peacekeeper" and the animations responsible for the Sniper. That is and has been stated at the start of this thread.
The "Color Jobs", sounds, pcx and units_32 were remade and I remade three of the animations translucent and added a Much better sound for the attack.
This is simply to consolidate the Files as well as include the newer file additions for the Sniper unit.
From all I am reading here, perhaps it was a mistake to upload the new files for this unit on this thread but I thought some players might want them along with the other Sniper Files all together. Additional files for a Unit generally do not need a separate Thread.
I assume everyone will work out their "issues" by posting on this thread in an ongoing manner until it reaches 20 to 50 pages

Hey, I did no ask to get shot down! (I probably deserved it though :D)

OK, that clears things up for me. Thank you, Vuldacon.

But guys, we have work to do! We are only on page 5!

...was not meant as a "Shoot Down" :) I had been up a long time and just somewhat annoyed by posts concerning "Bumps" and off topic subjects that seem to take place on all threads anyway.

Probably we are all affected by the Annoying Events caused by the Hacker. Things are and will be Better here.
