wisewoods Aug 04, 2004, 12:32 AM I just realized how useless the planes are...really...They should play a MUCH MUCH BIGGER ROLE in the game...I mean...look at the US military today...it has a huge airforce...and not too many tanks and ships...I would like to be able to destroy my oponents with a bombarder...not just damage them...PLANES got to be much much improved in CIV4...AND also...They got to be more effient...WHen i want to go to war in modern age...I don't build too many airplanes...This is gotta change...

For one thing, the ability for figthers or flak/SAM's (ships for that matter too) to shoot down planes should be improved, and explained better. I do not fully understand how large an area they 'moniter' or their chances of shooting a plane down based on their aerial defence value. Can anyone help me out here?
More value should be placed on fighters instead of bombers. I only use fighters for recon or a couple of them for air defence. Fighters should fight each other for air superiority. To me it's kinda stupid to have two civs with a bunch of fighters doing nothing until a bomber decides to attack. Maybe squares that you control the airspace over could be highlighted or something.
As mentioned in other threads, naval aviation should be modified aswell, to allow only fighters and possibly a new unit type of bomber.
Anyways, that's my two cents.

Longasc Aug 04, 2004, 10:41 AM Bombers are superstrong, Fighters... if you have the tech lead, you may probably only need a few for scouting.
I had for a long time no equal opponent in my games, but mostly AIs getting butchered by bomber hordes, having no Flak before flight is terrible for the AI in these cases.

I agree, especially with the offensive helicopters. Also, there should be attack aircraft (Like the A-10) and be able to attack ground units (not bombing them). Possibly put Stinger Infantry in to be able to shoot down planes.

Perhaps it should be possible to have fighters escort bombers, giving them a higher succes rate at a chace of loosing the fighters. The air superiority system would have to be far more effective for this to work, but it would add a fun and realistic dimention to the game.

yeah, after playing C3C bombers are amazingly powerful. you can destroy units completely, but the thing that really makes them unbalancing is the craters they leave :eek:

Loppan Torkel Aug 07, 2004, 10:13 AM When/if I get to the modern times I'm already winning the game and usually have a nice techlead. This of course make bombers very powerful and fighters, SAMs and flaks near useless. With some adjustments to the gameplay it might change in civ4. My point is - I'm not sure it's the units that are the problem....
Stid Aug 08, 2004, 04:17 PM i believe planes are too powerfull and really do my head in when they're shootin at me.i would like to see either more powerfull AA or more AA capable units in the game.i dont really use planes cos they slow the game down too much.stack bombardment would really change my mind about building them tho.
