View Full Version : Can't install 1.29f patch twice?

I want to run two installations of Civ 3 vanilla and I'd like to run them both patched. I already have one installation with the Double Your Pleasure mod patched. Tonight I installed Civ 3 again, ran the patch, and it automatically asked me if I really want to uninstall the patch. Next, I tried unzipping the archive to a folder and found that there are two .cab files in there that probably contain the files the patch adds to the game. I can't unzip those files. WinRAR says the files are either a format it doesn't support or damaged. It supports .cab files and I somehow doubt that the files are damaged when this is what I used to patch my DyP version of Civ 3. Has anyone found a way to install the patch to two copies of the game?

There are ways to install two different versions of the patch. I believe how it is done is to patch the game to the lowest level that you want patched. Then copy that directory to a different directory, and then patch the original directory to the higher patch.

Now, I'm just going off the top of my head here, so it might not be accurate information. I haven't actually tried this myself.

Uninstall everything, and reinstall Civ3. Then patch it to 1.29, and copy that civ3 folder to another folder. Then patch it to DyP.

But one thing I don't understand is why do you need a patch of 1.29 for regular civ3, and one patch for DyP? DyP is a mod in it's own directory. It shouldn't do anything to your regular installation files.

DyP installs its files to the same directories that your normal game files are in. At least that's what the setup told me. "Make sure the path above corresponds to where you have actually installed Civilization III." As a result DyP currently resides in the art and text directories of Civ 3.

That is a good idea though. I'd never thought of that. But you can just skip the lower patch by installing the most recent patch and then copying all the now-patched game files to a new directory, can't you? What I did last night to switch between the two was just uninstall the patch with add/remove programs and then reinstall it to the directory of the version I was going to play. That only took about 30 seconds, but this would be even easier.

DyP is a mod, and therefore mods the rules. But it has it's own seperate directory inside the Civ3 installation. At least, it's supposed to.

Might be a good idea to post this question in the DyP thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=19742).
