In a game I'm currently playing, I am losing on culture. Or so I thought. The culture limit is 100,000 points (standard size map). Now, according to the F8 screen, one of my rivals have a total culture of well over 100,000. It's been three or four full turns since the civ in question passed the 100,000 barrier (now it's 101,500 something) but I still have not been told that I have lost the game! How is this possible? :confused:

Could this have anything to do with the fact that I razed three of this civ's core cities late in the game, in an effort to stop it from winning a cultural victory?

A lot of my late-game decitions, most notably the decition to send all of my military on a suicide mission to try and raze as many of this rival civ's cities as possible, but also the decition to stop researching techs, have been based on the knowledge that I would soon lose on culture. Now I don't know what to do! :(

Anyone?

To win a 100K cultural victory, you have to have 100K total culture <b>and</b> have twice as much culture as any other civilization. So there is another civ that has at least 50,750 culture, and that is preventing the 100K civ from winning.

If the 50,750+ civ gets destroyed and the next highest civ has less than half the culture of the 100K+ civ, the 100K+ civ will instantly win (or maybe it's not until the begining of the next turn).

If you are a big-shot (culture-wise), I would
1) Make sure your cities all have all cultural improvements.
2) Start building new cities and rushing cultural improvements.
3) If the rival civ's culture is growing faster than yours (and even if not, assuming you can spare the resources), start capturing or destroying his cities to slow down his rate of growth.

Jason is right on the money with his explanation above. Either eliminate the next highest culture civ, or at least slow their culture growth down.

But why on earth doesn't the civliopedia state this? I have never lost on culture before as far as I can remember, so it's more or less impossible for me to know this. Also, is there a good - exact - way to tell how much culture the second highest civ has? I know it's not me, 'cause my total culture is just 40,000. Is the histograph my best bet, or is there a utility anywhere?

Hmm, seems that razing their main culture-producing cities was not completely wrong, then. Especially since also I managed to destroy both the UN and their spaceship. :) I just wish I hadn't traded away my science for gold, and stopped researching techs...

In C3C, use the F8 screen. I guess you're not using C3C though....
Razing the cities doesn't remove the Civ's culture - it just stops them gaining any more from the improvements and wonders in that city.

That's how I lost one GOTM - I stubbornly resisted Germany, and even took several German cities. Then Bismark made peace with me then declared war on the Greeks and proceeded to wipe out cities until a culture victory was triggered.

Oh, I use C3C alright. But F8 only shows my culture and the culture of the civ with the most culture. What I need to know is the culture value of the second highest civ... Anyway, I ended up using the histograph and a ruler. :lol: It turned out that the culture value of the second highest civ was around 60,000.

Go to the culture histograph, take a screenshot, paste it into paint, and measure the amount of pixels on the lowest line. It's not exact, but it's close enough to give a ballpark estimate.
