Anyone but Mao Tse Dong and those other people who lived in the more recent period of Chinese history. So no Sun Yet Sen, or Chiang Kai Shek.

Emperor Kang Xi or Qianglong would be good choices. Just pick some random emperors from Chinese history and make that the Chinese leader for Civ IV. Please PLEASE PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE........ don't make Mao the Chinese leader in Civ IV again....please don't, just don't......I beg of you............

It appears to me that you particularly dislike Mao for some reason. Or please correct me if that is not the case...

Anyway, I think Kang Xi, Qian Long, Qin Shi Huang (the first emperor of China), and perhaps even the Dowager Queen Ci Xi could work. Also, perhaps a few Tang and even Shang dynasty emperors could be considered (seeing that the better known emperors are generally from the Song, Ming, or Qing dynasties).

However, I do not really see any significant problem with Mao Ze Dong or Sun Yat Sen being used. If the leaders should be drawn from the periods of China's "greatest times" (Golden Ages  ), then there would have to be some debate on this issue. During the time of the emperors, China seem mysterious and formidable to the outside world in its isolation. During the time of the Communists, however, China seemed to have finally succeeded in throwing off the yoke of European imperialism and reclaimed itself from foreigners. Whether one period is "better" than another is difficult to say.

Well, I am a Chinese, but I am from Taiwan, so I hate that guy. No offense to any mainland Chinese. I just don't like that guy. And I hate Chiang, too, cuz he massecred all these Taiwanese people.

I prefer emeperors from Chinese history than Mao or any other modern era figures because I think these emperors is prolly a more suitable representation of the major part of Chinese history and culture than some leaders of communist or republic party whose political philosophy is totally irrelevant to a Chinese culture and history that is founded on Confucianism.

Honestly I think all these Who Should Be Leader things don;t really even matter. Who is going to be the letterhead doesn;t even make a difference in the gameplay. I don;t really care if it's Mr. Hanky just as long as they make the AI better...

I am also Chinese, but my parents are from the mainland. No wonder I hold a somewhat different viewpoint! Anyhow, I understand and acknowledge the points you bring up, and personally, in the context of civ, I agree with KabeDerlin. There is little significance in "who should be the leader of X civ" questions since they do not impact actual gameplay.

Yeah, I know......its a minor issue, but still, it won't take too much effort to change the leader, so why not. But yeah, I admit, there's no need to make a big deal about it. I hope I don't sound like I am making a big deal over it.

Funny, all the emperors mentioned except Qin Shihuang were Manchus. Not meaning to split hairs, but shouldn't the emperor of the Chinese really be a Han?

I figured since Manchurians today have been absorbed into the Chinese culturally and increasingly ethnically, then it wouldn't matter that much. Besides, Tang dynasty, which many historians consider the golden age of Chinese history, was founded by an emperor who is not totally Han Chinese himself. Sui dynasty, too. In general, Chinese culture and history hasn't always been all about Han people themselves. At many times, foreign ethnicities had make their mark on the Chinese civilizations, although these same foreigners were absorbed into the greater Chinese culture.

Right. Mr. Hanky should be the leader of at least one Civ.
