I have been a Civ III player for a long time and this is the first trouble I have had. Over the course of time I have bought/installed/patched Civ III, PTW, and C3C and played them with no problems. In feburary I upgraded my Windows 98 install to Windows XP home(I did the upgrade, not the fresh install at that time) and everything still worked fine with the game. In late July I had a hard drive glitch and had to re-install XP from scratch. (BTW I have my games on a seperate hard drive from my OS and it was not effected by the glitch.)

Today I got around to putting the Civ III series back on my machine and thats where things havent gone right. I installed them in order Civ III PTW and then C3C and I rebooted between each one just to be safe. Vanilla Civ III loads and plays as expected but PTW and C3C both have problems.

PTW will load, switch screen resolutions then it hangs with an error box which I will attach below. I will also attach the text file that error report generaes.

C3C will launch, change resolution, change resolution back and then quit with no error. If I put KeepRes=1 in the ini my display simple blinks all black twice and then nothing.

I have tried combinations in the ini file of playintro=0 and keepRes=1 and Refresh=XX and nothing seems to help this problem.

I have DX9b and I have ran dxdiag and everything checks out. My video card is a GeForce 5700 ultra with the 5216 drivers(I tried the 6711 drivers and they didnt help but they did cause problems with another game so I went back to a set that I know worked.)

Looking over some recent posts I found this
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=95861

and this
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=96019

where others have had the same problem. No solutions where found in either post.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

See if you can rollback DirectX to 9.0a. I think there's a bug in 9.0b that can cause conquests to hang.

I might try that as a last resort but from what I understand there is no safe easy way to do that.

What really has me puzzled is that I know it ran ok before I had to reinstall XP and my hardware hasn't changed and I am sure I had the latest directx version before anyway.

You might not have....updates work funny sometimes.

It could even be something not directly related to directx that screwed it up too. If you're the adventurous sort you could try to reinstall again....

If it comes down to a choice of reinstalling or no Civ III I think no Civ III would win, I am not going through all that blankity blank blankity stuff again getting my system back the way I like it.
