Do you use special units often when you play the game? By that I mean spies, special ops, and generals (not unique units).

Spies take way too much micro, for me at least. Those enemy spies annoy me to death, though. I usually have the scouts and generals tag along, but I don't use their abilities often. Scouts are useful for seeing spies, and generals add armor to their immediate surroundings, and that's useful enough.

I used to use the scouts to bomb enemy structures quite a lot. It really helps to being down cities fast. Recently I've become too impatient to use them. Ironic isn't it?

So most people use generals but has anyone noticed that the AI sometimes has like a quarter of their army made up of just generals? I've seen it quite a few times... and I am confused.

Confusedlike your  avatar.
They do that because they are morons.
Can a general attack alone like a rg unit?

What I thought was when they got to build generals they go "OMG t3H L337!" and just feel the need to build them.
Yes and half the time I am confused like my avatar... that's the whole point :D

It can't be...
Normally, AI have a few like 5~6 generals only...
AND each with at least 6 other units fellowing it.

Generals can't attack

I usually build generals or the senators/despots that come from the capital building. Spies are a little too much micromanaging for me.

I've seen them attack with an infantry unit and 2 generals. But I use generals, because entrenchment can be useful.

i use generals and commandos, never used spies much, but commandos are useful for making like 20 of them and sending them all on the enemy's capitol with bombs, usually quite a few make it to set bombs when i send some infantry to draw their army to some crappy city with no strategic value, and i like decoys and entrenchment with generals.

I sometimes use General's and their Ambush ability, hides about 20 infantry men nicely. 5 generals, 100 hidden troops, and with any luck by the time they arrive they have the 1000 points to plant bombs or entrench :)

I use them, particularly about 5-6 spec-ops w/ a general behind enemy lines.

I use mostly generals/patriots. Forced march ability is really nice.
Though spies and commandos are useful, they require too much micromanagement so I don't use them much.

I use generels, of course. My shock-cavalry attacking from the sides in big battles get slaughtered without a general.

And I sometimes use ambush to sneak a small army into an enemy base to destroy a wonder. But first I send a spy along the planned route to check for watchtowers. The human players I've played against are often too lazy to build those towers.

I oftenly use Generals and Patriots (from RoN:T&P).

In T&P, I oftenly like to use spies during spy missions during the Cold War campang ;).

Unless it's a cold war espionage mission, I don't use spies. I use special ops and generals. Special ops, when the coast is clear, are really useful for blowing stuff up.

Spies are, IMO, more annoying than dangerous. But nevertheless, I use explorers along my armies to detect them.

the scouts, i only use them in the beginnin of the game
i put them on auto explore
i used a spy once, wasted my time
i use general and special ops VERY frequently.
i like targetin buildin and farms, just to be annoyin, so when i rze the city, it wont be sayin "raze all civillian buildingsfirst"
and i use ambush with the general
im dope.

Yep. I use them because:
* They are useful, both in attack and defense.
* They can be a relevant fact of the battle.
* They are good at mantaining positions.
P.S: Sorry my english.

I tend to use Patriots more than Generals, but I can use both.

Spies annoy me to hell, but I always end up with a free one when I build the Kremlin, my favourite wonder.

for general, ill always have one wen im defending, entrenching and having your light infantry on stand fire is very useful. and for attacking, ill have 2 generals, one to hide and the other to create decoys to go in tanother section of there territories.

and for spies, ill use them for defense. If i ahve no army wat so ever, ill make cheap easy spies and bribe there whole army with about 4 clicks. and if i do have an army, then ill bribe there artillery and supply wagons.

for scouts etc, i dont use them much, ill use them a little to counter enemy informers and ill use them to destroy a wonder, but thats pretty much it.

I only use Spec Ops, but I rarely use them, stealth/stealing/assassinating are a bit over rated to me, I like the old fashioned ways of war, where you'd meet your enemy on the battlefield and the victor gets the right to march on his enemy's capital(or city).

Explains a lot, doesn't it?

But I still feel like my armies are completed with a general and supply wagons. Makes it feels like a real army.
Little do I know that the generals don't work if I don't do anything.

Spies and generals and all their special abilities add a level to the game that most people would not use to its full effectiveness outside of custom scenarios. A lot of these games have a tendency to offer more options than the average user will ever touch upon, and it's a darn shame.

I always send generals along with my army, but I say that using commandos for sniping and sabotage is always wicked, especially when they're cloaked:scan:

I use Patriots mainly but generals also. Both are quite useful. Scouts I use in the beginning of the game and never build them again later.

As for spies I find them useless.

i typically just use spies to get line of sight on the enemy cities, scouts to explore, and generals to back up the infantry line.

scouts on auto...
generals to entrench my forces...
the spy for nothing.

Special Ops, General and Millitary Patriot (depost and monarch) rule.

but spies are annoying, because of this i modded the bribery ability off (and increased sniper ability range and made it able to kill peace units)
