View Full Version : Problem with resources.pcx
Mungaf Aug 21, 2004, 08:09 PM So, i'm trying to put some resource icons in a little mod i'm making. I'm copy/pasting icons from other sources and putting them in my mods resources.pcx file, right? The icons are saved and in the right places in my file, but they don't show as icons in the resources editor. What am I doing wrong? Please don't tear me up, i'm new to resource modding.
truckingpete Aug 21, 2004, 08:15 PM What program are you using?
Mungaf Aug 21, 2004, 08:21 PM IrfanView.
truckingpete Aug 21, 2004, 08:24 PM I don't know what that Program is but...make sure the resources are in 256 colors...
that's all I can help..

Mungaf Aug 21, 2004, 08:29 PM Thanks for the advice, then.
Well, the source and destination are both 256 colors but have 249 and 253 unique colors, respectively. Any ideas?
truckingpete Aug 21, 2004, 08:36 PM Thanks for the advice, then.
No problem :goodjob:
Mungaf Aug 21, 2004, 11:42 PM Come now, SOMEONE knows how to make mods with resource icons.
GIDustin Aug 21, 2004, 11:53 PM post your file here and someone can look at it. See what you did.
Also, if you are making a scenerio, make sure the resources.pcx is in an art folder in that scenerios Search Path

ASA Dragon Aug 22, 2004, 12:03 AM In respects to the "256 colors", it's not how many unique colors there are, but the color depth - for example 16 colors, 256 colors, 16 million colors .... each one has the possibility of having that many colors, therefore greater variation and quality. PCX files used by Civ must have 256 color depth, but may have any number of those in a particular file, depending on the colors used for the units.
Could you post the file here? Perhaps someone could look at it, and see if they can figure out what is wrong with it ......
Hope this helps ....

Mungaf Aug 22, 2004, 12:39 AM All i'm trying to do is take certain icons out of the resource file used in the TETurkhan scenario for PTW and use them in my own. If someone could direct me to a tutorial about this, that would be great. The files should be attached.
ASA Dragon Aug 22, 2004, 01:04 AM I tested it in a test scenario, and they seemed to work fine ...... what exactly are the difficulties that you are having?
Mungaf Aug 22, 2004, 01:13 PM I put the icons in the resources.pcx file for my mod, and they just don't show when i try to set them as the icons for extra resources i create. Just an empty pink square.
ASA Dragon Aug 22, 2004, 04:30 PM The resource file you posted has 46 icons, with two spaces between the last icon, and the previous one. This is the one you are trying to use, yes? When you add a resource to your mod, it should have a corresponding icon to go along with it. After you add a resource, go down to the icon. Next to it is a number and a up/down shift. If you have that number set to a space that has no icon (in your case spaces 46,47, and everything after 48) then it will appear blank. Does this help? If not than a bit more detail, and I'll look at it again.
Mungaf Aug 22, 2004, 06:40 PM No, i'm trying to take icons from the 46 icon file and use them in the 26 icon file, which is what i'm using for my mod. I'm copying icons from the former and pasting them in the latter. Is there some other way I should do this to get them to show? Again, if any tutorials exist on this, I'd like to see them. And if I sound dense, it's because I am.
Zurai Aug 22, 2004, 07:04 PM I would help, but I have no clue how to use Irfranview. If you downloaded the trial version of Jasc Paint Shop Pro (www.jasc.com) I could help. Actually, with PSP, since the files should have an identical color palette, it would be as simple as you're wanting to make it - just copy from one and paste in the other. I've done it myself many times.
ASA Dragon Aug 22, 2004, 07:25 PM I think I know what may be going on ..... I did this, so see if any steps are not in sync with what you are doing.
1) Dragging an area in the original pcx (let's say the apple), and once you have the area selected (within the square), you go up to the toolbar and select copy.
2) In the seperate pcx (your modified one), you drag a similar square area in a blank box, go to the top and select paste.
3) Once you have copied and pasted all you wanted, you save your modified file.
I tried that and it worked for me (using irfanview).
ASA Dragon Aug 22, 2004, 07:27 PM Perhaps you just closed the irfanview window, and did not save ..... I do not know if you can set it to prompt you to save/overwrite before closing like some programs.
ASA Dragon Aug 22, 2004, 07:30 PM Also, if you are modifying the pcx file while the editor is currently running, the changes will not appear. You have to shut down the editor, make your changes, and then when you restart the editor, your changes will be available.
Mungaf Aug 23, 2004, 12:02 AM ASA, I've done all that many times. I'm downloading PSP to see how that works.
Mungaf Aug 23, 2004, 01:42 PM OK, now I have the icons showing, but now all the icons appear surrounded by a pink square when placed on the map, and when I play in debug mode all resources are black squares. What gives?
Arne Aug 23, 2004, 02:47 PM Sounds like a palette problem. Make sure, the last coulours in the pallette are used only for background and border.
Ozymandias Aug 23, 2004, 04:43 PM I had the black square problem -- VERY bizarre as it only happened when I put the resources.pcx in the mod's file path. I couldn't find any problem with the pathing (no spaces, etc.). Out of desperation, I simply over-wrote the .pcx in Sn00py's terrain and it's worked fine -- not that I consider this an ideal solution!
