Enjoy. A friend just told me about it, I am still downloading.

I recommend the Bittorrent-Link, all others are already full. :(

Well, let's see if it is really that great. :)

Yes!
MTW is getting a little stale after so many games, this will be a welcome breath of fresh air.

Managed to get a download on the Australian server. Stable at 94 KB/second. Be done in 30 minutes.

My problem is I know it will never play on this computer (it probably will play on my laptop, but there's no way I can transfer a 162 MB file).

Couldn't you set up a temporary network to transfer the file?

I wrote about the demo in the Total War Forum -> www.totalwar.org

No, it is not THAT great. Still promising, but it has some issues.

Graphics are not that great in real gameplay and camera control is awkward. But some things are better than in previous Total War games.

Still, I recommend downloading the demo and discussing it in the Total War Forum of TotalWar.org.

I'm unsure about it, but then demos are very often different from the real thing.

I find command and control to be much harder in RTW (demo) than in MTW, the unit being alot less responsive. Due to the increased speed of the game and the difficulty in controlling units you'll find yourself either using the pause button alot more or going much more head-on upon your enemy.

Another 'feature' of the demo is to place your forces so close to the enemy and the so-called "ambush" already set up that it is quite tricky (at least as Carthaginians) to deploy in a better formation (not that you need to really).

P.S There is a patch for the demo to allow you to play as Rome.

I think I'll just wait until the game comes out.

If it wasn't for the fact that I've just moved and am on dial-up for a week or so, I'd be downloading this. I'll just have to wait. :(

Please grow a brain, I was clearly talking about the demo as I wrote that I was

Now I'm mad.

The demo was great! I personally preffered playing as the Romans in the tutorial, but Carthaginians weren't so bad. :goodjob:

LLXerxes
Aug 23, 2004, 09:01 PM
Personally, I thought that was the worst tutorial ever...

I thought it was a wonderful tutorial.:p

Aug 23, 2004, 09:53 PM
Well, it showed you how to play.

I just beat the tutorial, and crushed Rome as Hannibal :D.

@KOC: Where can I get this patch?

Armored elephants are great, they cause so much havoc.

This thread contains alot of different "mods" and "patches" for the demo e.g play as Romans, more units added and the Romans starting across the river.

THIS IS FOR THE DEMO!!!!!

Er, after going through the demo again I decide its OK...

In this thread?:hmm: All I see in this thread is a link to the demo which doesn't allow you to play as the Romans on the Trebia map. But you say there is a link to a patch for the demo that allows you to play as Romans on the Trebia map. I would like to know where it is, so I can kick some Carthaginian butt!:hammer::)

Plus, you also know what troops they have amd you also know about he suprise cavalry
Only trouble is they will have perfect timing, and you don't know hen that its...

Amenhotep7
Aug 24, 2004, 08:48 AM
Yeah, but I didn't hafta play the game to know that. I could crack open any book about the Punic Wars, and it'd describe to me the Battle of Trebia...

Gogf
Aug 24, 2004, 09:38 AM
Heh, I just replayed it, and at the begining reorganized my troops, and "pulled a Cannae" :D.

@KOC: Can we have a link to the patch please?

Finally downloaded the demo and wasn't amazingly impressed with the amount of content that they offered since I would much rather have seen some of the campaign side of the game.

Yeah, I do wish they'd introduce us to the campaign map.:(

The added negative is that there was a TV program based on Rome Total War and one of the episodes that I watched was the Rome - Carthage battle so I had already seen the terrain and knew what would happen so it wasn't really that new.

Am I the only one who found the demo to be particularly underwhelming?

* The graphics: Yeah, they're 3D, but they don't look that great (edit: let me rephrase that... up close they look good, but when you're scurrying around the map, they almost look worse than the 2D sprites in MTW). In fact, it looks very similar to MTW. I heard a rumor that it might be due to the fact that they're rendering everything via the software (as opposed to sending it to your card).
* Is it just me, or is the Rome vs. Carthage fight easy as heck? Even on the toughest difficulty setting.
* Everything moves real quick, and dies real quick. Also, I found it somewhat disturbing that I can perform frontal light cavalry assaults (against spear) to great effect. Uh....

Basically, in the end, it seems easier and it's more "forgiving" than MTW -- even at the hardest difficulty level. Other than that, it plays/feels almost identical to MTW -- w/ the exception of the ancient era 3D units.

For me, personally, it's all about the strategic game. The tactical battles are pretty fun, but, generally, they're pretty easy (unless you're grossly out-classed and out-manned).

Oh well... still looking forward to the release.

Volstag your an old hand at MTW you should play as the Romans who are tired by the time they start moving up the hill. As well as lacking in calvary units
But I have to agree everything moves so fast. Then i noticed the map being much larger, This is likely to accomidate large forces. (As well as Huge trees which look awful.)

ATTENTION: RTW demo players
Make sure you check out the 15Mb flash file/presentation that comes with the DEMO. theres a lot of great screenshots and information, as well as shots of the campagin map.

Well I have to say the demo was ok, not that I expected much, it seems like alot of people thought this demo would come with half the grand campaign, a dozen historical battles, and multiplayer, demo's just don't work that way.

Think of it this way, imagine you had never played MTW, and you got a demo, you had only 1 battle, a huge army of peasants vs a big group of spearmen and some royal knights, if thats all there was, you would get pretty bored.

The demo is not ment to be a standalone game, just a minor taste of the games full glory. I do think the battles look far better than anything from the total war series before, however you have to use the right view, alot closer to the ground to see the real coolness of it all, looking from a birds-eye view like the old total war games is just not the way to get the full graphic enjoyment. I frequently paused the demo, then worked positioning the camera at different angles to view an elephant or horse charge, or a volley of skirmisher spears, and from the low down angles its a thing of absolute bueaty, of course your gonna need a hefty system, or the battles will NOT look that great. And we all know the real bread of the total war series is the strategic map, I have friends who don't even play the tactical battles, just the strategic map on MTW.

There is another weird thing I noticed about the demo, I got almost the same graphic lag (mainly at the start before the troops got wittled down) on nice high setting with gleaming helmets and shiny watter, and high-res textures, as I did with things cranked way down to the bottom, the improvment was not really much regardless. I still had to play the first minute or two with pause orders and then going in close to watch the battles.

The added negative is that there was a TV program based on Rome Total War and one of the episodes that I watched was the Rome - Carthage battle so I had already seen the terrain and knew what would happen so it wasn't really that new.

Actually, not exactly. On the battle of Cannae episode of decisive battles, they give a quick run-through of Trebia, mostly Hannibal ouflanked Rome, and used his elephants, nothing to giving away. Of course, you did see the terrain.

The campaign map doesn't look so good, from what I've seen, but it could just be I'm used to civ, and it will be good.

No thats the American one... I'm talking about Time Commanders where they did an entire episode where the team played as the Carthagians and then for the last 5 minutes the 'experts' went through what actually happened.
