It is cold up there. So why do scots wear those dresses and whats the history behind them? And do they wear underwear or is that just something others say as a joke?

It's because (and they'll deny this vehemently) they're a wee bit girly ;)

Why not? if they werent so damned expensive, I'd buy one and wear it (I was in scotland for a bit, and a Kitl is not a simp,e as say a tunic in its construction)

I wear a kilt when it's too warm to wear pants or shorts. With underwear under it.

The kilt was actually invented by a English (!) tailor. Hr recieved a request from a factory owner who employed scots to make their native dress-the plaide-more practical for a factory enviornment (it was a long blanket folded somewhat like a tunic). The tailor responded by shaering the garment in half, the bottom half being the kilt. They were mildly popular in Scotland, then the English banned them following a revolt, so naturally they became infinitely more popular. ;)

The real Highland dress (the sort you see in "Braveheart") is actually very warm.

Other parts have practical applications. The sporran is a useful bag, and the Sgian Dubh is a wicked little knife that's easily accessible in a tight corner.

That would be the modern kilt as "invented" by Rawlinson in the mid-18th Century. Prior to this, and going back centuries, the Scottish traditional dress has developed since the Irish ancestors came and colonised the Highlands - the dress then was a long shirt, with pleats, that ended at the knee. This was called a leine. It was accompanied by another piece of cloth, of which I can't recall the name, that was wrapped over the shoulder and breast.

Today, we don't wear them unless on special occasions such as weddings although, if you visit other places in Scotland - from Fort William, northwards - you'll maybe catch sight of an older generation Scotsman walking about in his kilt.

As for wearing underwear under our kilts then a true Scotsman would never wear underwear. It's up to you to determine if someone wearing a kilt is a true Scotsman or not. ;)

The only reason I wear underwear is because every one wanna lift my kilt and see if I have underwear on.

See? Told you they'd deny it's because they're all closet transvestites ;) :D

That's why, in places such as Aberdeen, they make their sheep wear wellies.

next one to mention kilt in the same context as "dress" or "skirt" and I'll come round and give you a kicking ;)

I'm not 100% sure why we wear kilts, although I did hear that people from Aberdeen wear them because sheep got used to hearing zips :mischief:

edit:Greetingts Abulafia :D nice to see another Scot in here, you join an elite community of........erm........... 4

So they don't get mistaken for being English, of course.

As for underwear, it depends... personally I don't.

1 cuz it's warm down there and
2 leather PANTS weren't popular back then (or healthy, back then they treated leather with pigeon droppings) :nuke:
