View Full Version : why did the ottomans enter world war 1 bigmeat Aug 25, 2004, 03:10 PM why did they enter ww1, if someone could give a detailed answer i would be grateful :) Longasc Aug 25, 2004, 03:30 PM The English article of the Wikipedia is not very elaborate, but perhaps can you speak a little bit German: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman The Ottomans already lost a war in 1912 on the Balkans against Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, Montenegro, even before, in 1911, Tripolis to the Italians. It was clear that WW1 the Ottomans could not fight alone, and they tried not to be drawn into the conflict at all. Enver Pascha, who was in Berlin and recruited a lot of Prussian officers for the Osman army, convinced the parliament, even reluctantly, to join the side of the historical partner Germany. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enver_Pascha This guy was rather radical and lead a genocide against Armenians and his unrestricted warfare made the arab world very biased against the Osmans. They tried to gain lost territory back from Russia and they really got back some provinces after Brest-Litowsk. Enver Pascha had however to flee from the new chief of state, Kemal Mustafa (Atatürk), the founder of the first turkish republic that succeeded the Osman Empire. There is more about it, but close ties to Germany and the not unrealistic possiblity to regain some lost land, paired with the "panturkish" idea ( basically nearly the same as the Pangermanian idea of the Nazis later) let them chose the Axis side. This not really paid off in terms of territory, they lost in Palestine and anywhere else. bigmeat Aug 25, 2004, 03:36 PM oh, okay, thank you airrahul Aug 25, 2004, 03:55 PM Also, the Ottomans bought two German battleships at the start of the war that were at the moment, shelling British possessions in Africa. This really ticked off the Brits and led them closer to war with the Turks. |
