View Full Version : New Unit: Lycon Legion 08/29/04
A Viking Yeti Aug 29, 2004, 08:28 PM This is a werewolf-swordsman replacement unit I made for the CFC User's Mod (see my sig)... The cape is now all civ colored. Also, sorry for the very dark civ colors. I may fix that in a little while, but I don't have the time nor initiative to do it now.
Anyway, it come with all the .pcx's and required file, but the sounds just link over to the legionary sounds. It'd be great if someone could make custom sounds for 'em ;)... Special thanks to Dease, Husky, Muffins and everyone else in the OpenFX help thread, and everyone else that helped me with my many mess-ups that I forgot to mention.
Questions, comments, and complaints are all welcome... Well, maybe not complaints :p. :joke:
EDIT: Forgot the preview :p...
UPDATED: Fixed the .ini, sounds should work now, sorry 'bout that.

Uh... Really? I thought he looked grey. There isn't any green in the palette, other than the smoke colors, so it may just be you ;).

 Yeah, I think the civ swords (other than maybe the swordsman's) are too short, though I prefer long swords... Wow, that sounded bad. Swords, as in made of steel, just to make sure no one's thinking anything else *cough* namelesss *cough cough* :D...

Chukchi Husky Aug 30, 2004, 07:20 AM The full name for this unit is the Lycontine Legionnaire. I thought of the original idea for this unit.
Here's some wolf noises (from Black & White) that could be used.
A Viking Yeti Aug 30, 2004, 10:18 AM Yeah, but I'm too lazy to type the whole thing :p... Actually I used "lycon" since in just means "wolf", so "wolf legion". And I forgot all about the "naire" part. Thanks for the sounds, by the way.
Drift Aug 30, 2004, 10:25 AM I've been hoping for a werewolf unit for some time, but this isn't unfortunately the kind of werewolf I had in mind. ;) Unit looks good though. :goodjob:

Actually, someone else already came up with something similar: http://www.palladiumbooks.com
In the Rifts RPG(r) and Palladium Fantasy RPG(r), both of which are published by Palladium Books, there is a race of humanoid wolves called the Wolven. The wolven have a culture and government that's similar to the ancient Roman Empire. As a matter of fact, when Earth gets virtually wiped out by a massive magical cataclysm in the late 21st century (Rifts(r) timeline), one of the few surviving pockets of human civilization is the Itallian penninsula. When the cataclysm went off, rifts to other places and dimensions (including Hades) opened up, and many supernatural creatures and aliens came to Earth. In this game's timeline, the Wolven, who are originally from Palladium World, came through a rift to Italy, where they helped the humans rebuild and form the New Roman Republic (with power armor that looks like Roman and Wolven Legionaries).
As a matter of fact, I'm thinking about doing a Rifts (r) mod, if I can get Palladium's permission, and If so, I'll use this as one of the UU's for the New Roman Republic in that mod (it'll be called the Wolven Legionary).
Oh, and Nice unit, BTW. :goodjob:
Dease Aug 30, 2004, 11:41 AM Great unit :goodjob: The attacks are my favorite
The death is rather abrupt, but overall I like it :D
have you tested those sounds ingame? quickly looking at the .ini I don't think they're reffering to the correct directory :hmm:

My idea (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=2121973&postcount=17) is similar, but different, as my idea is alternative history (read the civilopaedia). I couldn't write all the history as I reached the caracter limit.
I never heard of Rifts until now (probably because I live in England).

No, haven't tried the unit out in-game yet. Didn't think the sounds were off, but I'll check. If it is, sorry 'bout that.
BTW: Attacks are my favs too :)...
A Viking Yeti Aug 30, 2004, 12:58 PM I copied the sound file names directly from the legionary .ini file, so I know they aren't off; the directories I typed in by hand, but I can't see anything wrong with them. Exactly what looks off about them  ?

..Civilization III\Art\Units\LegionaryRun.amb
should be ..Civilization III\Art\Units\Legionary\LegionaryRun.amb
the way I would do it is ..\Legionary\LegionaryRun.amb
A Viking Yeti Aug 30, 2004, 07:02 PM Oops, I'll get that fixed... :p
EDIT: Sound .ini fixed, check the first post. :D
odintheking Aug 30, 2004, 07:51 PM Will you do any more wolf units?
A Viking Yeti Aug 30, 2004, 08:26 PM Yeah, I'm going to do a Lycon Cataphract, but I don't plan to do anymore after that... I'm working on two mechs right now (both of which you know :p)...
pinktilapia Aug 30, 2004, 10:22 PM Lovely gree... erk... gray wolf. Couldn't it be used as a skaven unit in a certain mod... No, don't hit me!

Don't you start with the color thing too :p... I don't know what a 'skaven' unit is, but I think I'll hit you just for the fun of it ;)...
pinktilapia Aug 30, 2004, 10:31 PM  These are evil mutated ratmen from the Warhammer world, Embryohead's treasured baby.
A Viking Yeti Aug 30, 2004, 11:22 PM Ok... Now I have to hit you :D. I guess from that far away he does look kinda rat-ish.
Chukchi Husky Aug 31, 2004, 05:22 AM What colour is this square?
nameless53 Aug 31, 2004, 10:20 AM silver and grey..
NO, ITS GREEN! MOLDY GREEN I TELL YOU!
*trys to keep the insane side in himself*
uh.... that wasnt me...
A Viking Yeti Aug 31, 2004, 12:50 PM What colour is this square?
 (12345678910 :p)
Ogedei_the_Mad Aug 31, 2004, 01:23 PM Are you also planning to do a Wolf Archer sometime later? Might make a very interesting civ for a fantasy mod. :)
A Viking Yeti Aug 31, 2004, 02:19 PM Hmmm... Maybe ;)...
tjedge1 Aug 31, 2004, 06:53 PM Werewolves? Yes I can use this. Now to find a home for it. Good work, and I'll keep my eyes out for another Werewolf unit.
Hikaro Takayama Aug 31, 2004, 07:41 PM What colour is this square?
192,192,192 and 128,128,128, if I'm not mistaken (guess who's been editing WAY too many palettes lately.... :crazyeye: )
I aggree, some people around here need to check their monitors' color/chroma adjustment settings :p
And I still plan on using these as Wolven units, unless I find out about some FF game that had canine type people in it, then I'll use them as UU's for that civ.
Mr. Will Aug 31, 2004, 07:56 PM Great job! STOP GETTING BETTER! YOU MAKE ME LOOK BAD!
 j/k. Keep it up!
A Viking Yeti Sep 01, 2004, 12:39 AM *smacks head on wall a couple of times* K, done; now I know nothing about palettes... Just get me some paint thinner and I won't know how to use a mouse :D...
Thanks for the comment
TO HT:  Waaaay too much palette editing... I feel for you.
odintheking Sep 01, 2004, 07:40 PM If you make enough units, I could even put a wolf civ in my mod.
A Viking Yeti Sep 01, 2004, 08:09 PM I could easily make a warrior, spear-man, swordsman, pikeman, and possibly knight... That would cover a lot of the ancient to early middle-age units...
tjedge1 Sep 02, 2004, 04:46 PM That would be awesome! I would certainly use them! My Glantri civ will become more Lycon that way. And more unique.
A Viking Yeti Sep 02, 2004, 07:58 PM I have two mechs to do (not much left to them), and then I'll get working on your lycons :).
tjedge1 Sep 03, 2004, 06:03 AM Awesome thanks!
Chukchi Husky Sep 03, 2004, 11:05 AM First make a settler and worker.
Nwoll Jan 26, 2005, 05:29 PM sorry to bump an old thread but i was wondering if any unit creators/fixers could center this unit for me. in game it is off center (too low)
tjedge1 Jan 27, 2005, 06:30 AM I agree. I noticed it yesterday during a beta test.
Kyriakos Jul 13, 2005, 03:17 AM Very cool unit :)
i suggest you change the name though, to either:
Lykos (greek) legion
or
Lupus (latin) legion
some more lycophiliac info:
* werewolf in greek is "lykanthropos", as in misanthrop(os) which is hater of men-people.
*a well-known misanthropic (see how everthing links to everything else  ) latin saying is: "homo est lupus homini" (man is wolf to man), or in another version: "homo homini lupus" (man is man's wolf)
*there are a myriad old popular tales throughout europe of people being transormed to werewolves after dark. In the balcans a very popular twist in such stories is that it is the woman that gets transformed into a wolf.
*a wolf is a very strong symbol of many things, particularly of things of sexual nature, but also symbolises the outcast.
It isnt at all strange that wolves are very often characters in cartoons; a wolf pack can also be seen as a parallelism of elementary or highschool groups of pupils & surely everyone has once felt as if they were just that, when being approached by such a hostile group
edit: ah, im sorry, i didnt realise that the last post here was from so long ago. this makes this a real :bump:
tjedge1 Jul 13, 2005, 06:47 AM Yes, but since it was bumped I'll respond. The word Lycon here is a shorter version of Lycanthropes, which is possibley a modern conversion of that greek word you mentioned. It might not be totally accurate in terms of history, but in D&D it fits perfect. A Lupin in D&D is an enemy to the Werewolf, which belongs to the family of Lycanthropes in D&D. Obviously I'm not talking about anything in a school book, but in a game, which this units suites perfectly to me. ;) So in effect, I'm not saying you are incorrect, so don't take it that way, I'm just referring to the reasoning behind the name it has now.
