Pikemen Unit Pack

This thread will include all pikemen I make.

A list, from newest to oldest
Generic Halberdier - Nov. 03, '04
Dwarf Halberdier - Oct. 23, '04
Viking Halberdier - Oct. 23, '04
Tupi Pikeman (Mimbukabá) - Sept. 12, '04
Koori Pikeman - Sept. 8, '04
Egyptian Pikeman - Sept. 1, '04
Zulu Pikeman - Aug. 12, '04

For a preview of my next pikeman and/or to request a pikeman, go here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=2140322#post2140322)

The animations are all based off of the original "african pikeman" I made, so if you see a resemblance, you're right.

All downloads will include AT LEAST 7 flcs, they are, attack, death, default, fidget, fortify, run and victory. If there are additional flcs I'll put a note above the unit. Also included are civpedia pics, and a units_32 pic. Sounds are linked to in the .ini, if there are custom sounds I'll make a note of it. The readme includes all the code necessary to add the unit to your game. :)

An in-game preview will be attached to the end of this post and will be updated as I complete new units.

All animations will be VERY similar to the ones previewed for the Halberdier, so I'll only include an animated preview for those animations that are different :)

Hey, it's Civ, the pikeman already is the size of a mountain anyway. :)

Actually, if the pike is made thinner, it won't show too good. At game scale, units have to be a bit bulky to look good. :)

Hey what's wrong with a thick shaft? (And no that isn't what I meant  ) I think it looks like a stronger pike that way.

Dease
Sep 02, 2004, 04:56 PM
@mstk - the next unit will have a slightly thinner pike, the reason I made the pikes so thick was not because the pike wouldn't show up at civscale, but rather because the shadow had random gaps since the pike was soo skinny, however, enlarging it didn't work too well, so it still has embarassing gaps in the shadow ;)

@mobilize - next is the koori pikeman, it's previewd in the preview thread (;)) which is linked to in the first post :) however only a quick model has been completed, so it'll be awhile yet...

Hey, that Egyptian Pikeman attack would work great for a halberdier :), a unit type that's severely lacking. :(

Dease
Sep 04, 2004, 08:29 PM
I like that idea mrtn :), maybe you (or someone else) could post a good pic of a haleberdier in the request thread (generic is good)? Anyway, I added it to my list (post#3 of the prev thread) and it's #10 but will get higher priority since it IS lacking.

Great units all. Keep them coming. :goodjob:

But I keep wondering: with these great Koori units being created (of which the afore-posted pikeman is an excellent example), where's the Boomerang Warrior, the essential Aboriginal unit? How can you have the Koori without boomerangs? That's like the Norse without Berserks, the Japanese without Samurai, pizza without cheese, pastries without cream filling!

TopGun

Kodama, great master... I am still hoping for the Boomerang Warrior as well... but I'm glad we've gor the Pikeman and the Crocodile Warrior!

Hmm, keep up here. It is a what-if unit - what might have developed if the aboriginal australians had progressed technologicaly into a middle-ages like society...

Love the unit. I don't use australia though - may have to steal it for another culture...

looks to me like you'll have to steal it for another culture as ancient australian units and middle age aus units were the same thing. and as australia moved into the modern ages, they used western units.

The armor is croc skin, I'd assume they would realize by the middleages that they should find protection from projectiles ;)
Infact, he doesn't have shoes, he has croc skin ankle guards, they cover 'bout half his feet
And he does have red markings all over his body, sometimes it's more noticable on different views, but they're there :)

 I mistakenly overlooked the death and victory anims when tweaking the skeleton for this unit  sorry 'bout that, attached is a "patch" with the two fixed anims, also the first post will/has been updated with the new file along with the patch :)
NOTE: I haven't tested these, but they should be centered and such, if someone could confirm this I'd appreciate it.
EDIT: I'll update the preview once I finish rendering it :)

The Egyptian guy shouldn't have so much armour. The hot climate made heavy body armour impossible - that is what actually defeated many European crusaders back in the middle ages.

Well, there's a rather long debate in kinboat's thread if you'd like some quality reading ;)
but my (totally uneducated) view, is that these guys were main line defenders, they didn't really have to move/run around alot, that's what all the other lightly armored units were for.
and when they were travelling, I'd assume they'd simply take off all the plate armor(and the helmet), there's scale armor under it so they'd still have protection but would still be able to move fairly freely. :)

As for the epic game, I'm not sure which civ it would go best with, maybe someone else knows?

I decided that I may as well make some decent units_32 pics for the units so here's it is, just save the .gif and paste it into your units_32 file.
They're kinda small so if I feel like it, I may make better ones in the future.
it also includes my arquebusier, just because :)

...They're kinda small ...Yeah, I've been thinking about that, and I wonder if the whole weapon need to be seen in the units 32? Is the weapon or the look of the unit most important?
In that pic the dwarf is one of the biggest, and that can't be right.
