View Full Version : Which decade has the most Civfanatics?
Yakodi Sep 05, 2004, 05:36 PM There is a nice thread in which you can vote which age you are.
But the problem is that your age is changing and the results of the poll will be getting wrong with the time going on.
So I'd like to see this: From which decade do the most Civplayers come from?
Please vote for the decade of your birth.
This time even with the poll
Gainy Sep 05, 2004, 05:55 PM Even though there is already a very popular thread of the same type as this, I think this would be better to use :) I have moved up an age bracket in the old one, as i'm sure many other have too.
Cmon the 80's :D (i'm 16 btw)
Edit: You should note that I am now 18, and would slap my younger self if I had the chance.
1987 ftw
edit: 19, and again but harder
doolally Sep 05, 2004, 06:30 PM -this is a great thread! i'm shocked that no one 14 or younger is a Civ fan though. that makes me a sad panda. :(
edit: never mind. i posted too early. :p
shadow-walker_ Sep 05, 2004, 06:34 PM lies i am 11 and i love civ and most games that are of older origins :D
Blackbird_SR-71 Sep 05, 2004, 07:10 PM yeah I'm only twelve. hey its not just a game for the old people.

Well, when you get older it is precisely this kind of games that you have patience (and time) for. I play little else though, just civ that I've played since the first one came out.
'73 here, BTW
Yuri2356 Sep 06, 2004, 08:20 PM actually if u are born before the chinese new year (some time in february), u are still considered as a dragon.
Well, It was January, but the Snake more accuratley describes me than the dragon. I guess Buddah was drunk or something.

The Chineese Zodiac is Buddist. Something to do with Buddah gifting people born in certain years the personality of certain animals. Crazy stuff! :crazyeye:

1968 -- I think it's interesting, and pretty cool, to see so many ~younger~ people playing CIV III. The game takes patience, planning, strategic thought -- not exactly my strong suits back in the day.
classical_hero Sep 27, 2004, 10:24 AM I was born in 78. Now I have a question on this poll. Did we ever have a year 0AD? I don't think we did, so that means each decade starts at 1 and ends in 0.

Well that's a question of definition and a decade can be every period of ten years if you like.
But when you talk about the "Sixties" I think there is a common agreement that these are the years from 60 till 69. And these form of decades I wanted to look at.;)

About ages: Surprisingly many 40+ aged people playing considering computers had no place in their childhood. Surprisingly many adolescents playing considering the level of depth & patience required to play Civ.
Having both is what makes Civ the great game that it is.

Mikus11 Feb 10, 2005, 08:41 AM 1972 vintage - the original CIV came just when I was a freshman and living in a university dormatory. (not good!) I think my first videogame exposure was my uncle's "pong" game. You know, the one with the paddles and the bouncing ball that connected to the TV. Around 1980, I played "Dambusters" on the Commodore PET in our library, shortly after that I got a VIC20, then in 1984 a Commodore 64. Its all history since then. People my age were probably the first kids to grow-up in the videogame generation.
If I could vote a second time, I'd add my older daughter (2001). She is crazy about watching me play CIV3.

HAND Feb 14, 2005, 11:38 PM 1978.. I wish i was born in 10 years later though... when i was 16, all i had was an Amiga 600!!
All you teenagers now have hideously powerful pc's!!
rainmaker Feb 15, 2005, 08:54 PM I'm definitely an oldie. 1942. Been playing since the first civ came and didn't feel so old until I saw the results of the this pole.
Just got back to civ after having a couple of rounds with Farcry and Half Life 2. Need to slow down a little. Old age you know.
morbror_sven Feb 28, 2005, 10:03 AM lots of kids here
Arachnaphobia Feb 28, 2005, 10:15 AM 1988, didn't realise so many people born in the eighties played civ, I know of only one person in my year at school that plays it a bit.
SewerStarFish Feb 28, 2005, 04:29 PM 1965
I didn't feel "old" before I read this thread. :)
thescaryworker Feb 28, 2005, 05:12 PM Gosh, Arachnaphobia, you must feel lonely (all of my friends play it / will buy civ3)
subbss Mar 05, 2005, 04:38 PM I was born in 1987! It is my birthday in 8 days and I will turn 18, oh ya! What a good year, it is a big milestone, I can't wait...
Everyone thinks about different things when they think about turning 18....
You know who you are and what I am talking about.
At 18, you will be tried in court as an adult.
At 18, you can order things over the phone, from infomercials.
At 18, if you couldn't or didn't before most people will have a driver's license.
At 18, if you weren't already, most people will be working at a job.
At 18, you can legally have consensual sex with another person over 18.
At 18, you can do pretty much anything adults can do except drink alcohol.
At 18, you are pretty much an adult in every way other than having the wisdom and maturity that comes with age and further wiring of the prefrontal cortex.
There is one thing I left out that comes with turning 18 in the US. The thing I am most looking foreword to.
The thing I am most looking foreword to is voting. We all know how important that is especially in today's political climate and in the United States (where I live).
Me and my generation are becoming the future leaders, thinkers, and workers. Our brains and bodies are being rewired and retooled and most of us will decide at this point in their lives if they want to be further educated and go into college and decide what their major is going to be. Some people haven't made up their minds yet.
I am going to stay near my home (Chicago) and hope to major in computer science and become a systems administrator, computer programmer, or help desk technician.
Wow this sort of turned out to be a mini-autobiography of my future.
I must say I am surprised so many other people are surprised at their being people older than them playing Civ. I assumed more older people would be playing than young people. As someone said in this thread, you need a lot of patience and planning to be good at this game.
I like the fact that this thread goes by when we are born instead of how old we are but I think it should be in reverse order, with younger generations at the top and older at the bottom, and their should be a 10's and 20's generation listed.

Man, are there really 70 year old people on this forum or are people joking?
I started playing civ when I was 6.I picked the civ with the longest name:the carthaginians.I can still remember that game....trapped on a tiny Island, though I founded my cities so slowly I didnt realize how small it was till' the other civs discovered me.The germans gave me their world map out of pity
gmaharriet Apr 17, 2005, 03:21 PM Man, are there really 70 year old people on this forum or are people joking?I can't speak for 70's, but I'm 63. I remember my grandparents playing card games all night, but that was long before there were computers. A turn-based game doesn't take the fast reflexes of a younger person, and not all older folks become senile. Even if ya DO get a little slower in old age, you can take all the time you want deciding what you want to do. ;)
Ares de Borg Apr 17, 2005, 06:16 PM '78.
Man, I played Civ since it first came out. I actually played Pong! as a kid.
I don't even feel old, I'm not even 30. ;-)
Tearor Apr 17, 2005, 06:22 PM It seems odd that the teenage generation would make up most of the population of players on Civ 3. Its not really a game that they play much. I'm like the only one i know that plays civ3 or has even heard of it, and im only 15. You would think about a game that is based on history would apeal more to the older generation than a newer one.

Vilati Timmadar Jun 03, 2005, 04:45 AM 1982.
Played all versions of civ excessively and (funny fact) always long after they came out...I was playing Civ1, when Civ2 came out, played Civ2 until 2003 and just got C3C...
And I still remember my first Civ1-game. Started on an island with no other nation on it. I had no idea what to do, just built some warriors, walked over the island...until some big nation came and just walked over me...
Invisible Rhino Jun 03, 2005, 05:38 AM 1982. I have played all three civs with the expansions. I don't really think they could anything to make me not like Civ 4. :)
PrinceOfLeigh Jun 03, 2005, 06:58 AM And even longer Zerbia. Learn how to spell. ;)
Why learn how to spell? She's spelt Civilisation correct.
Don't bow to the American spelling Becca!
erpcon Jun 03, 2005, 09:13 AM 1949
I played Pong as an adult! :borg:
I'm impressed with the youth for playing Civ 3. I thought they would be interested in the more action paced games like Grand Theft Auto. My hat is off to y'all.
My job keeps me at a computer terminal most of the day. I once programmed business systems using COBOL.
N3pomuk Jun 03, 2005, 10:29 AM 1984-
It all started one booring summer in the 6th grade when I bought CIV for the SNES at FUNCOLAND, now neither exists but my love presists.
But we need to admit that we've come a long way baby, and that reheated coffee we call civ tastes just as sweet every time.
Cheers

Ah the 60's. NASCAR was still pure. Golf was not a tech show. My friends and I could use the whole neighborhood for capture the flag, at night, and the parents were the biggest cheats in the game. Anybody miss Mayberry?

you would be suprise. My 5yr old nephew knows how to play this game? But then he is smarter then most 5yr olds.
Fatman139 Sep 17, 2005, 03:26 AM 1967, too late for the free love era. Early enough to remember Vietnam. Just right to run in the 80's and love it. Old enough in the 90's and 2000's to be sad for the way we've let things become. Oh, it's still be best thing going but it could be oh so much better. I played pong and was addicted from that day on for computer games. Who would have thought then that we'd have home computers. If I'd only invested in Apple, Microsoft, Dell, Intel, AMD, etc then what would I be now?
Willowmound Sep 17, 2005, 05:10 AM Can't believe there this many older people here. I didn't know people over 30 played gameslike civ3!

sela1s1son Sep 17, 2005, 02:25 PM How to date me:
I can remember the Berlin wall falling (we even had German exchange students at our house).
I can remember: X-wing (the expansion B-wing), the release of TIE fighter and its expansion. My first computer (for my family and I) was an Apple II. I remember Windows 3.1 on our next computer!
We were on the internet in 1992. I remember most of class asking "What is that?" Of course it helps having a brother working at the place that created it (CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland). My brother is 15 years older then me.
I remeber Sega Genesis coming out, as well as SNES. I had the originial Sonic games, and Super Mario Kart.
I was the 'tween' generation... the generation that grew up just after the Cold War, but before today's chaos. I remember my classmates (in 4th grade) making fun of me for reading Tom Clany's "Red Storm Rising" by saying "The Russians Are Coming! The Russians are coming!" without being worried.
I played Sid Meir's Covert Action, Pirates, Civ 1, Colinization, Civ 2, Alpha Centauri, Civ 3, and soon Civ 4. I also remember going "Oooh!" At Covert Action's graphics.
I also remember (at least I think I do) when they opened the first McDonalds in Moscow, and I remember thinking "Wow, right?" ;)
gmaharriet Sep 17, 2005, 03:40 PM I voted about 9 months ago, but...
When I was born, Roosevelt was still President, Pearl Harbor had been hit by the Japanese 2 months earlier, TV was still just a laboratory experiment, the first computer (using vacuum tubes) had not yet been built, most people still used "ice boxes" and the guy who delivered the ice drove a carriage with a horse  (yeah, we had trucks, but he didn't).
Can't say I long for "the good old days". I love my computer!!! :D
Own Sep 17, 2005, 04:12 PM You're the first person I've heard say "I don't care for the good old days." Civ is a good reason though. I don't know how the previous generation occupied themselves.
fe3333au Sep 17, 2005, 05:32 PM I have also polled by age previously
But was born in the year of the smilie, Dr.Who and the magic bullet ;)

My dad remembers this massive artillary train being led by horses, right before American involvement in WWII, when the Army was changing to trucks. Granted, as he was only tiny guy at the time he remembers it because of the Horses and only found out later what was going on. ;) That's his first memory too.

Willowmound Oct 23, 2005, 12:41 AM Nice job reviving this thread, Birdjaguar! I reckon it should be STICKY, keeps new threads on the same topic popping up all the time...
edit: it should also be moved to the Civ4 section, where people can find it!
fe3333au Oct 23, 2005, 01:55 AM Why not start another in Civ4 and compare the demographic ;)
