View Full Version : Old Games with little requirements
Dabomb18359 Sep 11, 2004, 05:17 PM I have many friends or some that have really old computers like "133 Mhz, 32 RAM and you know maybe 6 MB memory. Besides StarCraft, are there any other great old computer games that could run on that without problems?
shadowdude Sep 11, 2004, 06:49 PM Total Annihilation or SimCity2000 could probably run on that no problem.
Yuri2356 Sep 11, 2004, 07:36 PM I'd recomend Dungeon Keeper, and Civ1 or 2.
Perfection Sep 11, 2004, 08:43 PM Sim City 2000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dabomb18359 Sep 12, 2004, 12:13 PM Any RTS's or flight simulators or anything army-like? And wouldn't Starcraft run on that?
Yuri2356 Sep 12, 2004, 01:20 PM Yep, I'ds say Starcraft would work.
Dungeon keeper is an RTS, your leading leigons of evil creatures against the forces of good in massive underground battlefields. Much fun.
Chukchi Husky Sep 12, 2004, 04:22 PM I won't repeat any said above:
Age of Empires, Transport Tycoon Deluxe, Worms
Dabomb18359 Sep 12, 2004, 05:48 PM Is the original Worms any good? I know Worms 2 rox but that might be more hefty requirements.
Yuri2356 Sep 12, 2004, 06:21 PM Worms 1 was pretty good. Graphich are quite pixelated, but still fun to play.
FriendlyFire Sep 13, 2004, 07:23 PM Run some of the really old classical games.
Space crusade
Command HQ
Steel panthers
Moo 2
Lemmings
Grab the other team 17 games (Guys that made worms)
Alien breed.
Quark
shadowdude Sep 13, 2004, 07:27 PM Hmmm...
Wolf 3D could run on that too, if you could still find it as freeware...
Dabomb18359 Sep 13, 2004, 08:14 PM I'm very pleased with all the wonderful old games... What would you all vote is the best? Like one game to get my friend with a piece of calculating garbage not worthy of being called a "computer"?
Chukchi Husky Sep 18, 2004, 06:31 AM Is the original Worms any good? I know Worms 2 rox but that might be more hefty requirements.
Worms 2 requriements:
Pentium 75
Windows 95
16 MB RAM
1MB Video
16-bit soundcard
citizen001 Sep 18, 2004, 06:45 AM What about MAME32 Emulator games? but they're only legal if you own the original thing.
2020 Super Baseball used to be great!

Who acutally owns an arcade machine?
Specialist290 Sep 18, 2004, 08:54 AM The original Red Baron was pretty good.
A few of the older game made by Sierra are pretty good, too; Lords of the Realm II, Caeasar II, Silent Thunder, and Robert E. Lee: Civil War General are ones that come to mind.
Quentin Sep 18, 2004, 10:21 AM The best game I can think of is C&C: Red Alert. You probably could also run Half-life on that.
Joeb WK Sep 19, 2004, 08:54 AM Dig-Dug,Pac-Man and Galaxians are pretty good.
DBear Sep 19, 2004, 12:28 PM You didn't tell us what kind of games your friend liked. There are lots of old RPGs that can be downloaded from a certain abandonware site...
Joeb WK Sep 19, 2004, 12:47 PM You really shouldnt mention abandonware here you could get the thread closed.

Well he likes military games, he likes pilot games more, but anything military, so Red Alert probably works. Stuff like that, not really the shoot-em-ups. More along RTS lines and that kinda stuff. Stuff that lasts, not just play it once and you're done.
citizen001 Sep 19, 2004, 03:24 PM Who acutally owns an arcade machine?
Some supermarket shop owners still have them, the guy who owns the fish and chip shop near the station where i live does. the arcade machine has street fighter on it.
Dabomb18359 Sep 20, 2004, 06:27 PM Also Apu (insert long last name) from the Simpsons does. :D
thestonesfan Sep 21, 2004, 09:10 AM I don't know if Half-Life would run on that.
But there are tons of good games that will. The original Command and Conquer is a blast. If he likes military games, he'll probably love Panzer General 2, which should run okay with it. Civ2 is a classic. Warcraft 2 is also fun.

What's Panzer General 2 like, and what about the original not the second?
The Person Sep 22, 2004, 02:01 AM Dink Smallwood. It's freeware, and can be downloaded from these locations:
Developer (www.rtsoft.com)
Fan site (www.rpgplanet.com/dink)
thestonesfan Sep 22, 2004, 12:31 PM What's Panzer General 2 like, and what about the original not the second?
I haven't played the original.
The second is a hex-based war game, obviously set in WW2. It's very easy to learn for a war game, and can be very challenging. By far my favorite campaign is the German Blitzkrieg. You start out in the Spanish Civil War, and if you do well enough, you can invade Britain and even the United States. It's not for realism freaks, it's more focused on fun.
Crazy Eddie Sep 22, 2004, 05:12 PM Let's not forget the X-Com games UFO or it's sequel Terror from the Deep, two of the finest games ever written.

Ironically, I have the original, but I've only played a demo for the second.
Concept for both is about the same. There's probably just more missions and better graphics in the second one. Also, in PzG I, you start in Poland, not Spain.
MikeH Sep 23, 2004, 05:03 AM If your friend likes military games the old Steel Panthers games will run on old machines and are a bit more realistic than Panzer General, there are three fan made updated versions that are available free, do a Google search on SPWAW (remake of Steel Panthers 3) and SPWW2 (the same people do Steel Panthers:Modern Battle Tank, both use the Steel Panthers 2 engine).
Flight sims I enjoyed on my old P100 include Hind (Russian helicopters), Apache Longbow (American helicopters), 1942:Pacific Air War and US Navy Fighters.
Dabomb18359 Sep 23, 2004, 05:51 PM It seems many of these involve freeware... Are there many you can buy in stores? LIike Red Alert 2, and those maybe in like a WW2 Bundle pack?
The Person Sep 24, 2004, 01:45 AM I got Starcraft and RA1 from a low-price bin.
citizen001 Sep 26, 2004, 01:24 AM the original Age of Empires game came free with a box of Nutrigrain cereal. most people used to just buy the cereal for the game.
Lozzy_Ozzy Sep 26, 2004, 05:52 AM @ Who actually owns an arcade machine?

C&C is good, there are loads i don't remember, search for free ware/abondonware.

I know about downloading illegaly and stuff but is freeware stuff legal?
Lozzy_Ozzy Sep 26, 2004, 03:02 PM free ware is legal as it is no longer copyrighted
Dabomb18359 Sep 26, 2004, 03:05 PM is all freeware no longer copyrighted?
Lozzy_Ozzy Sep 26, 2004, 03:09 PM that's why it's called freeware! same as abondonware, but that can also mean the company went bankrupt...
Dabomb18359 Sep 26, 2004, 03:12 PM there's tons of junk out there that's free but doesnt work and also much of it is probably viruses.
Lozzy_Ozzy Sep 26, 2004, 03:25 PM there was a really good website but it closed down, try fields of glory(great game!)
Dabomb18359 Sep 27, 2004, 06:30 PM there was a really good website but it closed down, try fields of glory(great game!)
any good websites that are popular, still running, virus-free, and have good games?
EDIT: Also my friend doesn't have intranet access on his computer,l so which would be download-friendly and easily accessed by his computer?
barbu1977 Oct 14, 2004, 03:59 PM Don't forget Heroes Of Might and Magic II.
Fetus4188 Oct 14, 2004, 04:47 PM I would go with Total Annihilation but I'm pretty sure it is nearly impossible to find a copy of the game anymore.
