A Shaolin Monk would make a great Chinese flavor Medieval Infantry unit, yes?

I know about the "monk" unit that's included with the Japanese extra units in the PTW expansion. I'm using that unit for now. But it's far from perfect. And orange-robed Shaolin Monk unit would be perfect.

interesting, but its al ways better to use major types of troops in place of little niche trooper if possible; besides, lacking armour, I'd say he more ranks a one on defence then even the alreayd lowlly 2 given to the reguler MI

I'd definitely like to have this unit. Maybe for a fantasy unit, but not a historical unit. :) Shaolin Monks weren't a part of the Imperial Chinese army and I doubt they ever were interested in the politics of the fickle emperors. ;)

Or it could serve as a Kagyu Monk for Tibet...

if he has the sword he could be a monk or a chinese swordsman

I strongly second this request! Even though it would be a "niche unit" ... but it reflects a good deal of what China and Chinese culture is all about. A true "flavor unit" which could even be a "Unique Unit".

You mean the Hollywood stereotypes of what China and Chinese culture is all about. :p :crazyeye:

But it can be one very interesting "What-if" unit. Like what if the Chinese monks did the same thing the Japanese monks did - become heavily involved in the politics of the government. :)

when did japan do that?

Buddhism became a major political force (and a political tool) in Japan's feudal ages.

The Tendai monks of Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei were politically powerful and enjoyed the patronage of the imperial family. They were so powerful, that Oda Nobunaga himself considered them to be a threat to his power and razed the temple in 1571.

mostly japan has been run by military, and it is the military who controlled the religion not the other way, if the monks were powerful nobunaga wouldnt have become as powerful because he was christian. and if buddhism became so powerful it wouldnt have curshed shintoism, but it wasnt. it mixed. the samurai controlled japan they were buddhist but not monks.

Yes agree a Shaolin Monk would be great, but it would never be obsolete would it? There are around today?

That is a bushi, samurai, or ronin. It's Japanese.

A Shaolin Monk uses Kung Fu. They don't use katanas. Chinese swords are usually straight.

And bald. Shaolin monks are always bald.

Unless it's Kwai Chang Caine. ;)

Took me a while to dig up this thread, but I found it. :bump: If someone is interested in modeling the wardrobe, I'd be happy do this unit. I could use it as a blademaster for the mod I'm working on.

Some specs for anyone interested. I use Poser as my main animation program, and Kinboat's paperdoll figure as the character. If you need it, I could convert it into a 3ds file so you could model the clothes around the figure.

Anyone up for it? :)

I like the Monk unit in Conquests.

We need a specifically Chinese warrior monk since the one in Conquests is very Japanese.

I like the Warrior Monk from C3C too, but this unit would have a completely different look to it. I'd also like to make a variation of it while I'm at it. I'd make the original to match the pictures in the first post (same colors, same sword). But then I'd also make a fictional version by altering the colors of the robes and giving the unit a slightly curved blade (just so he could fit better into my mod). All I need is for someone to design the clothing. I could do the rest.

Wow! I'm glad someone is interested in following up on my suggestions. Unfortunately, I'm not up to speed on making clothes for Poser. (I had a go at it many years ago.)

For those who have made characters before, it should be easy to make clothes for a Shaolin Monk unit. It's really not much more than draped sheets. The HARD part would be animation. Not only does he use a sword, but Shoalin monks are the masters of kung fu. They invented it.

Actually, kung fu was developed much earlier before Buddhism arrived in China. If I recall correctly, the earliest martial arts records date from the Zhou Dynasty. Monks devised their own system as means of excercise, discipline, and self-defense later on.

The robes are quite simple. Plain orange and a little yellow as well. The attack animation doesn't have to be entirely accurate (that would be too much work for the unit creator to do ;) ).

If someone could take care of the clothes, I'll worry about the animations. :) I've got 3DS Max, and have been trying to learn modeling. But every tutorial I get for clothing, I only get about halfway through it before I get stuck. Oh so frustrating! But handling the animations with Poser is much simpler. Plus I'm sure there's plenty of diagrams of kung fu positions and movements out there that I could use for inspiration. :)

I would vote for this style of clothing over the other examples. I think it'd be much easier to model, and a lot easier to animate.

Good news. I've actually found some pants (also socks & sandals) that work quite well. Now all I need is to find a shirt/robe and I can get to work on animating. If/when I find something, I'll put a preview together to see what you guys think.

My girlfriend's brother is a Shaolin monk. Before that he was a singer in a rather scary heavy metal band. He's pretty scary in general! But he wouldn't hurt a fly, even though he can disembowel you with just his little finger. Or something.

OK, here are some ideas that I threw together in a couple minutes just to get your guys reactions.

Pants based off of large picture in link on 1st post (straps didn't show up at this scale, which is even bigger than civ scale)
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/SM.JPG

Here is a robe that I modified from an existing coat in my library.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/SM2.JPG

Let me know what you think, and be honest... even if it's to say "no, I hate them." It's just something I whipped up real quick to see whether you liked them or if I should keep looking. :)

It's starting to look a little bit like a monk. But only a little bit. The robes need to be much looser and baggy. What you have now looks like a tight shirt and knee-length pants. But you are well on your way to making something good.

One of the most famous Shaw Brothers kung fu movies is called "36th Chamber Of Shaolin" or also known as "Shaolin Master Killer"

Click this link:

If your local video store has kung fu movies, there's a good chance that it might have this one. It could be a good reference for animation.

Thanks for the feedback. OK, I'll just keep throwing possibilities out there and you can tell me what you like and what you don't. :)

Next try... I changed the pants alltogether, made the outer robe baggier and longer, plus added a loose shirt underneath to give it a bit more of a layered look. Whatcha think?

Thanks Shiro. ;)
But I can't take all the credit. A lot of the wardrobe is compliments of Kinboat's models. I've just done some tweaking, mixing, and adjusting to try and come up with something that'll work for this particular unit.

This is one of about 6 units that I'm currently working on (I'm helping with the mod in my sig.), but when I'm done I might be able to help you out with some of those units.

Especially for all those packs of units you put out there. ;)
I'll have to borrow a page from your playbook DPII, I'm planning on releasing a pack of units myself hopefully in the not too distant future. I know that'll mean several sleepless nights though. :)

Yes... I too will be releasing something... in the very near future, a Punic War scenario is going to have much more in their unit repetoire... :mischief:

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on the Unit Graphics forum then to see when you release them. :)

As for the Shaolin Monk, I've increased the contrast between the pants, shirt, and outer robe just a little bit to add to the appearance of layers. I've also cleaned up the model a little bit, making sure there are no cracks along the seams. So if there are no more complaints/suggestions, I'll get to working on some of the animations over the weekend. :D
