I'm thinking about getting Civ 3,the main reason beinng so I can play against my boyfriend. Does the Game of the Year Version come with a multiplayer ability,or do I need to get an expansion pack?

No multiplayer on mac what so ever... you'll need a PC for that...

I've heard that the PC-PC network play experience with Civ3 is less than exciting, even over a LAN.

If you want to play Civ competitively, have a look at our Game of the Month competitions in the GOTM Forum (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=49). We run two games each month, and one of them is Mac-friendly. You play from the same starting map as other players, submit your final victory save and we score and rank the entries, so you can see how well you perform relative to the other players. You could both play and submit the games, and compare your results with each other and with some of the best civ players in the world.

I can also suggest Civilization the board game. We are hook on the stuff ;)

It requires lots of time but network civ also does anyway...
