View Full Version : The Playground
The Omega Sep 12, 2004, 07:54 PM This is a map based on my playground at my old elementary school. From 2nd to 5th grade, the kids at my school had imaginary nations, wars, diplomacy, etc. I was thinking of doing a scenario for it, but until I stop being lazy and actually start working on it, I'll just post the map.
A MOD HAS BEEN MADE BEEN MADE BASED OFF OF THIS. IF YOU WANT TO PLAY ON A PLAYGROUND, I RECOMMEND YOU PLAY THE MOD, AS IT IS BETTER THAN THE MAP.
You can download the mod here. (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=165562)
MSTK Sep 12, 2004, 07:58 PM I wish my school was that colorful :( Having all thsoe nations stuff at school had always been a dream.
The Omega Sep 12, 2004, 08:06 PM Well, middle school came, a person with an extremely huge army came, Freak Attck (my nation ;) ) consumed all the old nations, and a war agaisnt Senso (new nation) was imminante, when suddenly: Teachers put tighter restrictions on students. So basically, it was fun while it lasted.
KabeDerlin Sep 13, 2004, 01:05 PM Ah. I remember the old playground games.... *Sighs and goes back to flipping burgers at McDonalds.*
Amenhotep7 Sep 13, 2004, 03:16 PM What would cause teachers to ban your diplomatic game, when you're in a sate of war? Did you guys actually hurt each other?:crazyeye:
zeon252 Sep 13, 2004, 03:21 PM our governments were never that centralized in elementary school but in middle school turf war became the name of the game. Now in high school no one cares too much work too little time
The Omega Sep 13, 2004, 05:49 PM What would cause teachers to ban your diplomatic game, when you're in a sate of war? Did you guys actually hurt each other?:crazyeye:
Depends on what side you were on. Now Freak Attack obviosly never hurt people. Of course not. :mischief:
Also, the teachers didn't know that it was a complex-diplomatic-war thing. They just saw kids fighting. Of course, even if they had know, it still woudn't have helped us much.......
The Omega Sep 13, 2004, 05:51 PM our governments were never that centralized in elementary school but in middle school turf war became the name of the game. Now in high school no one cares too much work too little time
Well, in Elementary school, we had reccess. Since we don't have recess in middle school, it's become very difficult to do anything war related. If we still had recess, you would be seeing a map of my middle school too.
truckingpete Sep 13, 2004, 05:54 PM Aw yes the Playground...started getting boring in 6th grade,,teachers had to put millions of rules on the playground...but before that, the goodol day..feels like 2-3 years ago..WHAT A MINUTE! It WAS!
But nice map...

The Omega Sep 13, 2004, 06:15 PM :wow: I didn't realize how many people's school had stuff like this! Of course, the ones at my school were obviosly the best. ;) :p
kulade Sep 13, 2004, 06:54 PM Brings back my elementary school memories...
About in 2nd grade me and my fried, Aaron along with 20 or so other kids formed an orgainization which made comic books, and although it wasn't for money as much as for fun, we still got a kick out of it. We would lauch "illeagal expeditions" into the "haunted house" (which was a real house, but not haunted) and to the forest and swamp around the school. Eventually the teacers noticed and the school bordered off the playground. Basically all of us got the same class in the 3rd grade and then when Pokemon hit, and it was the biggest wave since Fascim. Aaron and I basically waged diplomatic war over our club, since the president got the most of the Pokemon cards. The rest of the members shared their cards communially. Eventually I gained presidency, and fought for "women's rights" to be in our club. When forth grade came around Aaron and I were in seperate classes and the club wads basically disbanded. We started hanging out with some dorks in 4th grade and it ruined our possiblities of creating such a popular club. In 5th grade, Aaron moved a few miles away and it has been years since our last contact.
Sorry, just had to tell you my story. :D

:dubious: Yep, that proves it. My school was definately the best when it came to politics and wars.
The Omega Sep 13, 2004, 07:42 PM Because I have absolutely nothign to do, i've decided to make a timeline of the events at my school :yeah: ! *waits fo rapplause. When none comes, starts grumbling, but gets to work anyways*
2nd Grade:
Boy-Girl War I: Girls want to rule the playground. Boys fight back. Boys win. I spend the entire war trying to figure out what's going on. By the time I do find out, the war's ended.
Boy-Girl War II: Since teh girls couldn't rule the playground, they decide to rule Girl Island (the island in the upper right corner of the map) I lead the attack, and the boys force the girls to let people go onto the island.
3rd Grade:
Nothing happens!
4rth Grade:
Group Wars: A bunch of groups form, including the Horse Group, the Char Group, and the Galaxy Wars Club (mine! ) Everyone except Galaxy Wars Group ends up fighting each other, and in the end, everyone except the Galaxy Wars Club is destroyed.
Boy Union: The Galaxy Wars Club renames itself teh Boy Union, claims Boy Island (the big island to the left on the map), and gathers an army.
Boy-Boy War: The Boy Union decides to invade Girl Island. The Girls are too lazy to fight, so they get another group of boys to fight for them. This ends up being the 2nd most embarrising war for the Boy Union. The entire war is spent doing useless training exercises, or running back and forth between the islands, trying to defend and attack at the same time. About 10 peace treaties are signed and broken throughout the war. Realizing the stupidity of it all, I leave the Boy Union and form Freak Attack. Eventually, everyone gets bored adn the wars stop for the rest of the year.
5th Grade:
United Forces and Freak Attack Revolution: The Boy Union decides to retake Freak Attack, which at the moment only contains me. Another group, the United Forces (or U.F.) revolts. Their group contains two whole people! this war ends up being the largest embarressment the Boy Union has ever recieved. For some strange reason, their entire army was completely unable to defeat three people. The Boy Union give up.
Freak Attack Conquests: Freak Attack, realizing that no official rules of war or conquest have been made, make rules that allow them to easily and officially conquer the Playground.
One Day War I: Freak Attack (which now contains 12 people) defeats the entire Boy Union Army ( 25 People) in a day. The only reason this wasn't a complete embarressment for the Boy Union was because the attack was completely by surprise, most of the Boy Union army was playing soccer or football at the time, and the Boy Union was somehow able to put up a better resistance than they did in the Freak Attack/U.F. Revolution.
One Day War II: Freka Attack beats the girls in one day (actually, we declared war, and they surrendured immediantly)
The Final War: Biggest war ever. The Boy Union, angry at the fact that their last three wars were complete embarressments, decide to overthrow Freak Attack. Freak Attack and the U.F. form an alliance to beat the bo Union. The war goes good at first, but the Boy Union convinces the U.F. to change sides. Freak Attack is almost destroyed, and barely hangs on. Eventually, a small amount of people from the Boy Union rebel, and form the Rebs. Combined, the Rebs and Freak Attack crush the Boy Union and teh U.F. But before they are able to completely wipe out the two groups, school ends.
6th Grade:
The Boy Alliance: The Boy Union, the U.F., and a new group called the Barbarians form a coalition called the Boy Alliance.
Senso: A group called Senso, that contains 40 (!) people emerges, and declares itself the ruler of the school.
The Combined Forces: Freak Attack forms a military alliance with the Boy Alliance to figth Senso. The idiots didn't read the fine print I put on the bottom of the treaties, and involuntarily joined a group called the Combined Forces, which Freak Attack led. I was also able to trick Senso into joining (idiot also didn't read teh fien pritn ;) ).
Freak Attack Empire: Senso revolts, and I declare myself emperor and get rid of all teh democratic stuff in the Combined Forces that was meant to keep the other nations happy. The Combined Forces becomes the Freak Attakc Empire. Before the Freak Attack Emprie can fight Senso, the teachers find out and put a stop to it all.
The End.
kulade Sep 13, 2004, 07:45 PM Girls always sucked, we always bothered them and the didn't ever fight back.
The Omega Sep 13, 2004, 07:48 PM Girls always sucked, we always bothered them and the didn't ever fight back.
The only war they actually did anything was Boy-Girl WAr I.......Even in Boy-Girl War II, we only had to yell at them to make them surrendure......
Dom Pedro II Sep 13, 2004, 08:18 PM I remember the old games we used to play.... ah, the memories!
We used to play pirates... I'd tell a bunch of kids that I'd beat them senseless if they didn't give all their money, they'd give it to me, and I'd spend it on stuff... fond memories...
I never had a war against the girls... I was always too busy trying to have sex with them. Not much has changed except now I focus on 6th grade and up... :mischief:
Dease Sep 13, 2004, 08:42 PM ...and then when Pokemon hit, and it was the biggest wave since Fascim. Aaron and I basically waged diplomatic war over our club, since the president got the most of the Pokemon cards. The rest of the members shared their cards communially...
I remember thos dang pokemon cards  our principle figured they were "too distracting" from our "peaceful learning environement" ;)
So she decided to ban them form the school, basically she got on national news we were all pissed at her 'cause she did it just for publicity.
Also I remember when some idiot was chasing some other idiot around the playground, there were these horizontal bars going between two poles so you could hang on 'em. anyways, the idiot being chased decidedd to go under the lowest one but forgot about the ducking part and ran right into the bar! he lost a few teeth that day(and is now brain-dead from drugs  )
Ah, memories :mischief: ....
but good job on the map omega :D

Make love! Not war!
I liked girls off and on in elementary school, a few at a time, but I had no idea there was any psysical differences! :D

1. Why did you bump this thread?
2. It's supposed to be a map, not a scenario.
3. There will be no more future updates, since this isn't a scenario.
4. I'm too bad with the editor to make a scenario for it, no matter how much I want to. And even if I did make a scenario based on this, it wouldn't be a very good one (I don't know how to make custom units, leaderheads, and tech graphics)
Bluemofia Mar 20, 2005, 09:05 PM 1. Accident?
4. you can ask for other people to make stuff for you.
The Omega Mar 21, 2005, 12:21 AM 4. you can ask for other people to make stuff for you.
But then I'd have to learn how to incorporate them into teh game, which would require time that I would rather spend playing civ. ;)

tjedge1 Apr 25, 2005, 05:21 PM I remember playing games at my elementary school. I noticed you are from Austin, what school is that? I went to Odom, they used to have a giant lincoln log looking castle and we played "Storm the Castle" after a few kids kept getting thrown over the walls to about a 10' drop the teachers stopped the game. Some people are no fun.
Bump means that you posted on a thread, and it moves to the top of the list in the forum. "Bumped to the front"
Civilationisme Apr 25, 2005, 08:33 PM thanks, sorry about that bump, didn't mean too.
I also would like to see or make a senario, and since no one seems to interested, im making one with the stuff you gave me. I assume in 2nd grade there were no factions, just boys and girls? And yea, it is just a map, but a senario is nice too, and more fun, in my opinion.
Still, :goodjob: on da map, and I hope you might be able to give me more details.
thanks, nice work.

Ooh! I can't make scenarios, but if you're willing to make one, I'll give you all the help I can! :goodjob:
And yes, in 2nd grade, the only factions were the boys and girls. If you have any other questions, I'll be glad to answer them. :)

Bluemofia Aug 27, 2005, 09:29 AM I was waiting for someone to bump this thread.
Welcome to CFC [party]
Just to let you know, it's not good to bump dead threads.
Anyways, The Omega and I are working on a Playground Mod for this, and it's comming along fine, just need the leaderheads and the techs. Maybe a few more units, but that's about it.
Emperor C Aug 30, 2005, 11:11 AM First, I like the idea of creating a scenario like this and the map is pretty good. Your story of elementary conquests made me reminisce on my school days empires. I hope you don't consider it a copyrighted idea because now I'm thinking about doing something along the same lines lol. On the other hand, I feeled compelled to tell my story because I see you think y'all were the best. Sorry man, but I think not :D .
I'll make this as BRIEF as possible, otherwise it'll be a novel so here it goes.
Venable Village, Ft. Hood Texas: mid 1986-88
Moved there when I finished kindergarden, learned to ride a bike (calvary), explored all the Venable, Pershing Park and South Nolan Creek from S. Ft. Hood st. west until I hit hwy. 190, northern tip of Willow Springs, Patton Park, 440 plaza areas(I'll post a map). Made a few friends, even more enemies, and learned about the Venable-Pershing rivalry.
88-90:
Alliance between MacMichaels cir. (my street), South end of Efird st. where most my friends lived, bullies and rival occupy the center and North end, and a good portion of Wainscott Ave., the largest st. in Venable. Lopez Loop is conquered and all enemies subjugated or forced to pay tribute, usually as weapons making material, bicycle parts, and kid's currency (candy, kool-aid packs, and toys, G.I. Joe's in particular :D ) The barbarians (bullies) on Efird are virtually destroyed, large amounts of booty taken and put in a abandoned trucker trailer on Venable dr. It would become our storehouse until it was taken a year later before we could get all our stuff out  .Barbarians on Wainscott and Efird try to revolt, crush again and brutally punished (beat them with thorned sticks and stole their bikes). Hawsey cir. taken with little effort. Churchhill st. put up a good fight but I invented bicycle blitzkrieg to finish them. My brother Christopher learns to ride a bike, just in time too. Pershing Park finally realizes what's been going on and sends a large force (about 20) and begins patrol around the creek, the border between Venable and Pershing. I counter with garrisons at the Bat Cave (a thick mass of vines and bushes hollowed out at the the creek SE of MacMichaels cir.), the Rock Pile (large pile of gravel lefted by construction on the westside close to the creek, protected by rough terrain and an ideal spot to launch a surprise attack against Pershing's left), and lookouts at the Deep Hole (a big inlet, by comparison to the rest of the creek, where a drainage ran to it from Pershing. It's directly S. of MacMichaels cir. ). By late 89 Venable is in my total control and poised to invade Pershing after the winter.
90-91:
Pershing Park, having been idle during the winter was attacked in early spring, before they anticipated any action. A barrage of artillery (rocks or water balloons) preceded an infantry attack from the Rock Pile and calvary down the main sidewalk from Efird to Pershing. An attack from this direction was not expected because of the terrain advantage the Pershing's enjoyed. Their village is twice the size of ours and the same ratio of manpower. The sidewalk from the S. on our side is flat ground but on their's, all up hill. So once the bikes crossed the bridge of the creek and got to the top of the first hill, we broke left an rode the crest of the small lower hill. This concealed our movements thanks to the bigger hills above us until we got to the big playground on the westside of Pershing. From there, we rode up the sidewalk into Pershing completely surprising them. Letting loose a hail of balloons, rocks for more stubborn foes, and steel reinforment rods thrown into spokes for anyone trying to escape. In about 30 minutes, their right flank had been obliterated and no one was able to send word for reinforcements. At the same time as the bike attack, the infantry made it after a long walk to east Pershing, using the drainage ditches and hilly ground to hide themselves. They were told to split in two when reaching the Pershing left, one force hitting from the east, another crossing the pedestrian bridge in western Pershing into their heartland. They were successful, but a few managed to notify the bulk of their army(around 45-55). The plan was for the infantry to complete the initial surprise attacks, penetrate to Hoover Hill rd. without stopping for spoils and meet the bikes at the corner of Cutler and Hoover Hill. The bikes meanwhile were to swing around to the big playground and destroy their "early warning system" and blitz between the north and east wings of Pershing. This was achieved but I saw their main force gathering and beginning their way UP Hoover Hill toward the infantry. Hoover Hill is pretty steep, going down on a bike u can easily keep pace with cars. I sent my friend Billy to inform the infantry of the coming threat and fallback to Rowe st. and hold there. My cav went down to the main drainage ditch west to the ped. bridge and climbed the hill at the end of Kildea st. then engaged the enemy with the infantry. They didn't organize there forces well so when I met them they were extremely outnumbered. We were low on ammo by this point so I told the infantry to retreat to home by way of the main sidewalk, collecting all the spoils along the way. I then charged downhill at the Pershings, spending the remainder of the ammo and taking out as many as I could. 2/3 the way down I turned into the shopette to access damage and waited for their cav charge. Hiding behind the shopette the enemy charge did not see us so I charged again, this time to their backs. Catching them at the bottom of the hill, we drew our thorn swords and started to inflict some serious damage, most retreated, some leaving their bikes and all. We collected the spoils and headed home. The Pershing's were forever broken and the The Pirate Empire was born. I started to consolidate, suppressing rebellion's here and there but before I could finish, I moved again to Germany.
Emperor C Aug 30, 2005, 11:34 AM Here's a pics to give u an idea. On the good map pic, the dots and lines are as followed.
Brown dot south of Venable rd.=Rock Pile
Red dots=major playgrounds
Green dot by creek=Bat Cave
Green strip on bus. 190=the viaduct (we pronounced it bidock or vidock lol)
It's the main way to get to the northern villages that were abandoned when the war with Pershing broke out.
Yellow dot=the abandoned trucker trailer
Blue dot at the creek and pershing ditch junction=the deep hole
Long black line=main sidewalk
short black line= pedestrian bridge
Emperor C Aug 30, 2005, 11:45 AM That's only the Texas story, I'll tell the Germany story later on. It's much better :D .
Bluemofia Aug 30, 2005, 03:10 PM You actually stole people's bikes?
Emperor C Aug 30, 2005, 11:10 PM Yeah sometimes. I guess in my young mentality that since 3 of my bikes were stolen during my time in Venable that I might as well steal replacements from other thieves. Everyone there was a thief of some sort. My neighbors on MacMichaels cir. were older high school kids. They were notorious bike thieves. They took them apart, repainted and rebuilt them from mixed parts in their front yard and sold them to any of the many pawn shops in the city. I estimate that I stole enough bikes and parts to make around 12 BMX's.
Bluemofia Aug 31, 2005, 02:48 PM 3 of your bikes? How many did you have?
Emperor C Aug 31, 2005, 07:57 PM 4
a little black roadmaster that i learned on and past to my brother
a nice tropical style BMX (i loved that one)
a chop shop bmx from a pawn shop
and a red and white 10 speed
these are all at different times, not at once
ansar Sep 15, 2005, 07:56 PM Can I please see a map?
DragonBird May 06, 2006, 05:35 PM Yea my school had 2 pincone wars between the 'girl nation' and the 'boy nation' yea in kindergarten so we were all like "she gave me cooties... lets start a war!"

Cheezy the Wiz May 14, 2006, 11:11 PM its funny, in my elementary school, Star Wars was really big, so we had the Rebels and the Imperials dukin it out at recess, now that was fun.

Bluemofia May 15, 2006, 02:52 PM This is a map. The scenario/mod is in my sig.
Lord Malbeth May 16, 2006, 07:44 PM Cheezy the Wiz, you mentioned Star Wars. The kids in my class used to play that too! A friend of mine was always Luke, and I was always Ben Kenobi! :D
(Remember this was like in 1st-2nd Grade).

washington00 May 21, 2006, 03:42 PM reading this makes me jealous.
i'm still in middle school but my elementary school and area wasn't even close to being as fun as this.
During recess the teachers would always watch you very carefully and any physical contact sport was greatly discouraged if not completely outlawed. Which means not even tag, and two hand touch football was barely allowed since people got pushed.
the only games that i remember enjoying were kickball (could only tag above waist on back for an out and can't touch them i.e. push them to block) and four square (not a violent game unless your a bad sport and throw the ball at someone, where you were then taken to the principle)
Bluemofia May 21, 2006, 03:55 PM We (the people at my elementary school) were allowed to play tag out in the soccer field (far away). But not in the actual playground, because we might get hurt or something, but we didn't care. We just simply avoid the teachers, and not be stupid about it, and we were generally fine.
The teachers had nowhere enough power to watch everyone carefully, because the playground was just too big for them to do. They generally stay close to the school, and ignore what was happening out near the soccer field. They gain more power in the winter, because there is a rule that kids without snowpants can't go out in the soccer field, so they can keep an eye out on more kids. (and you aren't allowed to throw snow where they can see you)
I think I only got in trouble twice in elementary on the playground for bad behavior. (once I threw snow, and another time I basically started a very brief and wierd war between my group and another group of kids created by a breakaway person from my group, who we were fighting a third group. The breakaway person kind of beat me up, and we were both sent to the principal's office. Parents were not involved though. :yeah: This entire process lasted for one and a half weeks.)

Lord Malbeth May 23, 2006, 03:10 PM I know he was, but he was always Luke.
