View Full Version : Can you have different army types available?
dugfromthearth Sep 13, 2004, 10:43 AM Can I have two different army types: hero and standard?
I want Heroic Code to produce the Hero army and Standard to produce the Standard type (HC and Stand are techs).
I want it so if you have Heroic Code and get the ability to build armies you can build Heroes but not Standards, unless you also have the Standard tech.
Does this work?
Hellfury Sep 13, 2004, 10:52 AM You can do this by having 2 army units that are built with different tech and structural needs, however leaders can only produce 1 type of army which is specified in the 'General Settings' tab in the editor.
dugfromthearth Sep 13, 2004, 01:10 PM Thanks, now I'll have to decide what army type leaders can produce.
Zeekater Sep 13, 2004, 03:39 PM I was not able to have more then one army type.
Well, you can have as many as you want, but you can build only one, either through Military Academy or through a great leader.
Therefore I had to add an improvement that would generate the other type.

Hmmm... methinks I need to give a civ a special Army! :mischief:
EDIT: Question... will giving added HP or Bombardment or anything like that actually work?

I don't know, but I think not.
The army gets its 'features' from the units that are in it, and doesn't have any features of it's own.
Test it :p

whoa, whoa, whoa... what do I look like to you? Some kind of whizz kid with the computer? Isn't it fairly obvious by this point that I'm far too lazy to test it? :p
I'll get right on it.

Hey, I'm lazy too, that's why I call people lazy so they'll do it for me :p
It should be a fairly simple scenario, a few different army types, preplace them with a few units.

Okay... in short... all of the unit features (minus A/D of course) work for Armies... so you can add HP, you can even make them able to Bombard... They can also carry only foot units, be wheeled, etc.

THAT I didn't know
Some good news, I should have poked you into testing it a long time ago
Dom Pedro II Sep 13, 2004, 08:03 PM I'm going to make an Aztec Army that can carry more troops but can only carry foot units.
I also think the Bombard has interesting possibilities since I find a lot of times that there are units that I really feel like have no purpose by themselves (like the Siege Tower for example), but with an army of units could be particularly potent... maybe the Siege Tower could be an Army unit... :hmm: Not sure... will have to do more juggling and playing around with the figures....
Zeekater Sep 13, 2004, 08:08 PM The siege tower would look cool as an army unit, good idea :)
I've added an army unit that can carry only foot units, but only one, so it just gives the unit an extra moving point and some extra HP. :)
unscratchedfoot Sep 13, 2004, 11:55 PM Has anyone ever experimented with making huge armies like 10 units in each one? Of course you have to make some other adjustments to ensure the AI uses them properly too. In real life, especially pre-20th century, many wars were decided by one major battle like the Battle of Hastings for example.
Dom Pedro II Sep 14, 2004, 12:04 AM One major battle, but armies were generally smaller... smaller population, less infrastructure, smaller armies.
WildWeazel Sep 14, 2004, 09:33 AM So you have GLs build one type of army, and military academy or another building produce another? Or more?
What happens if you give a unit the army flag and load AND unload abilities? Will the AI use it as a transport?
edit: nevermind, that would make the transported units attack together, instead of the transport itself :(

Even if that weren't the case, units can't unload from Armies... no matter what you do... :(
Unless this has been changed by patches or expansion packs...

Nop, units still can't unload from an army.
Nothing I'd really want actually, they are already too powerfull as they are :)
