Thanks Ainwood, the GOTM 34 was my first attempt at a GOTM - and I really quite enjoyed it. Particularily the rundown of how other players managed scores far better than mine!! Soooo much to learn, now on to GOTM 35

Well, I just beat my first COTM (04), may as well give this a try :)

Hi all,

My first attempt at GOTM as well. Still learning the ropes on Chieften but hope to do a resonable job.

I have seen referances to logging software to help document your move, I had a look in the download section but could not find anything. What do people use for this function?

BTW Ainwood and GOTM team, great job!

Yes, I must say I quite enjoyed GOTM34 and am still enjoying COTM04 as well. I don't post much but enjoy reading and studying people's insights. I have learnt so much from reading the GOTM forums over the past year and a half, but still need to remember to encorporate these things into my style.

I have not submitted many games because of vacations and time constraints, but also because higher levels have been somewhat intimidating. After my domination victory in GOTM34, I feel that this time, I will try Open Class for the first time. Should be great, Ottomans with that starting locale. Thanks a lot guys!!

:( I thought the ottomans were supposed to be scientific - I downloaded the predator save and libraries are still costing 80 shields when they should be costing 40. You didn't say the scientific trait would removed. I haven't played to the MA but I guess we won't be getting the free tech either.

In addition Barracks and walls only seem to cost half of what they should. Looks like we're militaristic instead of scientific.

I tried an Ottomans practice game using Bluebox's GOTM scenario file, and they were set to militaristic/industrious. I guess that may be a legacy from Cracker's days, when he would remove the scientific trait from all but one competing civ to level the playing field between vanilla and PTW. He did this because vanilla only sees one free tech each era change, regardless of how many scientific civs are in play.

Ainwood may have chosen a different non-scientific replacement trait, of course. :hmm:

I wish. :(

I run two PCs - I play test on one (faster) and design on the other. I reverted the traits back, but at some point I must have swapped them across PCs - only the PTW game is affected. Fixed now.

I can manually fix your games to revert the traits, so please e-mail them to me.

Guess I should just declare myself clinically incompetent and be done with it. :ack:

The Ottomans are scientific...But cost of library is 80 shelds in GOTM35 for Ottomans...
I play ptw1.27, load up save file for ptw too(gotm_35_predator_ptw.sav).Please make very sure that you select the right save file for the version you are going to play - the Civ file may load up alright in PTW, but it will probably crash later!

I am sorry/ I am late. :)

Hi,
New to the GOTM, a very good idea by the way. :goodjob:

This is kind of my 2nd one, ran out of time doing different things to get a playable version. (still not sure if would go all the way thru 34, never got off the island)

From my Foriegn Advisor screen I click on a particular Race and it crashes as it goes to the Negotiation screen. This is the first time I have met this race since starting the GOTM's, they were first introduced back in the very early 20's GOTM's.

My system as loaded in order:

Civ3 install
Graphix mod pac and 2 fixes for the pac
Alan's Mac patch kits up to 25
reinstalled my resources.pcx (and shadow)
+ a hacked up pediaicons.txt file (from the mac issues in 34 (won_splash, etc)

I went back to that GOTm they were intruduced on and checked the files, everything was there as AlanH had put them. so Im kind of at a loss presently....the only problem is with this one race when I go to the Negotiation screen. ...it crashes to desktop ( no messages ) before it gets to the screen.

any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
:p

oh, and I am running vesion : gotm_35_civ_open.sav
also, it has worked with all other new races I have encountered, but I also noticed those (leaderheads) I have seen so far only have a couple .pcx and .flc files associated with them (in the game folders), and some of the newer ones that I have yet to meet have multiple files with them, more like the stock leaderheads.

As a suggestion, try the pediaicons.txt file in this post (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=2120230&postcount=41) - it might help.

Otherwise, please PM me or e-mail me at gotm@civfanatics.net with more specific details (civ involved etc). :)

Going to give this one a whirl. I got smoked in a hurry last month, but since then I've got up to speed on Regent. Will probably get smoked in a hurry on Monarch this go around, but I intend to play it out to the bitter end and submit my pathetic final score so all can jeer and throw garbage....

No jeering or garbage throwing allowed! :D The only mocking and jeering permissible in in the direction of the idiot who failed quality-control school and seems to continually release games with bugs in them! :ack:

Seriously - we like people to submit no matter how badly they do. And no-one gets mocked for low scores - instead the atmosphere is to help each other and share ideas and strategies. :)

Please let me know what you find, Ainwood. It sounds like there's a changed race name in the BIC that's not supported in the pediaicons.txt file in my Mac installer. I'll need to update it.

is there a program I can open the .bic file into so I can check the file reference it is pointing to?

thanks.

Edited/update :

it isnt just the Mac version, I pointed my roomate to the site ( who has a PC ) and he started 34 same time I did, had same problems too with the pediaicon.txt and things. He played 35 last night and from my experience avoided communications (Negotiation screen) with said race after gaining contact with them. His game crashed after one of their units came into visual , he then went to the Forieng Advisor screen saw that they were there, closed it, and went to the next turn. *Im assuming they tried to make contact with him after his turn ended, thus also going to the Negotiation screen...he also tried just going straight into the Neogotiation screen before the turn ends and same thing/crash*

he has the reg upgrade/PC installs too up to game 34.

Further Updates:

Roomie delayed the taking of a city, which delayed visual contact, once visual contact was made the Foriegn Advisor screen was avoided all together, they contacted him 2 turns later and the Negotiations leaderhead is like a polorized/inverted copy of one of the newer leaderheads taken from the French Leaderhead....but it didnt crash, is the thing. he then left that screen went the Foriegn Advisor screen and was able to make contact regularly, where it had crashed both of us before. But still, the leaderhead on the Foriegn advisor screen is correct and the leaderhead on the Negotiations screen is all messed up.

here are partial crash logs from 1) my gotm35 crashes and 2) my gotm## crashes from when the Civ was first introduced.

Figured out a fix, though I just get a black box for the leaderhead now, but thats fine enough since I can at least play now =) and so can roomie.

a couple of the newer Civs werent like the others...here is how it was and what I changed it to... (ie: ?????_all.pcx)

#RACE_????
art\leaderheads\?????_Large_Neutral.pcx
art\advisors\?????_Advisor.pcx

#RACE_????
art\leaderheads\?????_Large_Neutral.pcx
art\advisors\?????_all.pcx

That's interesting. Maybe the art\advisors\?????_Advisor.pcx file is corrupt :hmm: It opens fine in Photoshop, and I'm sure it worked fine in GOTM 31.

Changng the reference to "?????_all.pcx" just means it points to a non-existent file, which is why you see a black square. You could point it at another .pcx file.

This game is pretty much set up the way I usually play.

Now let's see if I can avoid embassing myself....where was SirPleb's post? :mischief:

not sure that was the culprit, was a temp fix. had to change it back to Advisor again because it crashed again...worked fine for a few turns and crashed again.

get this.... I can communicate fine with them (Negotiation screen), then I go around and trade out "right of passage" with everyone but then ( they wouldnt trade straight ) so once Im done trading with everyone I go back to them (all in same turn) and it crashes again going to the Negotiations screen (only thing thats changed since last visit is trading rights with everyone else)... so something is still wrong there somewhere. Still doesnt explain the off, color inverted graphix'd leaderhead my roomate got when they first contacted him.

back to dead in the water.... :( I also tested changing their moods by demanding stuff to see if mood change was the problem, but wasnt the case.

I'm into IA and have build a dozen libs and some uni's before i read this. doesn't see much point now in changes; missed out on two techs and some 1000+ shields. got a fair amount of elites though.

what text file identifies the path to the correct ".flc" files? I believe that is where the problem is.

I have suggested that if we can't catch people before the end of the ancient age, that they simply play on as militaristic and we adjust the Jason score modifiers instead. :hmm:

Its stored in the save game file itself.

I have sent you a PM with a suggestion on how it might be possible to fix it. I've checked the actual save file, and the path looks fine - the path on your mac should be:
root to install \Civ3\Art\Flics\XXXX.flc

Help!

I am playing on the PTW open file. At exactly the same point in the IT in my 170BC turn, my game crashes, and has done so at least 4 times already. Basically, after a sequence of barbs impaling themselves on my units in the mountains, a barb horse rides into an undefended city, and the computer crashes.

I really would prefer to not have to give up on this game, but it is looking like I have no choice. Can you offer me any suggestions?

Yes. We mark the different start files with resources containing the class names. The reeources themselves have no effect on game play.
