View Full Version : GOTM 35: Civ / Mac Crashes
ainwood Sep 16, 2004, 03:12 PM Just in case the Civ / Mac players were getting jealous that their game hadn't been ruined by trait stuff-ups, we've added a random crash that may happen when you try to contact a certain race.....
(Ok we didn't intentionally add it, but its some sort of legacy crash that doesn't seem to have become evident before).
It appears that there may be a problem with one of the legacy install leaderhead animations. We don't yet have enough info to know how to sort it out yet, but if people who are experiencing this can let me know, we can hopefully sort it out fairly quickly.
I have some suggestions to try, but unfortunately being at work, I can't try them myself....
ainwood Sep 17, 2004, 05:05 AM Update:
After a few hours of stressing, I've finally worked out what this problem is.: The save file has the wrong file path in it!
You have two options:
Option a.)
Go to your civ3\art\flics directory. Locate four files called:
dal-Riada_ancient.flc
dal-Riada_Medieval.flc
dal-Riada_Industrial.flc
dal-Riada_Modern.flc
Copy these files, and place them in your \civ3\ directory. This should solve the problem.
Option B:
E-mail your save file to me at gotm@civfanatics.net , and I'll edit it to fix the problem without the need to copy files.
:)
stormbind Sep 17, 2004, 06:01 AM That works! :)
I have another problem: One of the heads is permanently a big question mark? I had this problem ever since I installed GOTM updates :undecide:
ainwood Sep 17, 2004, 06:01 AM Option C:
Fix the file yourself!
The attached program will fix autosave files. It will not fix comptressed normal saves. Unfortunately, it is also windoze only, so next to useless for the mac-users (probably >75% of the target audience!)
Unzip it, and run it. Click the 'select file' button, and browse to your autosave that you want to fix. Select it, and you should get a message telling you that the fix was successful. If not, then e-mail teh save to me.
The 'fixed' save will be in the same directory as the file you chose, with the same name, just a "Fixed_" prefix on it.
ainwood Sep 17, 2004, 06:04 AM That works! :)

Have you tried replacing the pediaicons.txt file in your civ3\text\ folder with the one attached to this post (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=2120230&postcount=41)?
If that doesn't work, then PM me with the details of the civ affected. :)
stormbind Sep 17, 2004, 06:20 AM Thanks, that appears to have fixed it :)

I recommend Mac users use option A.
It's quick and painless, I've done it and it works. Select the four Dal-Riada_xxxxx.flc files in /Art/Flics/ and option-drag them to the top level folder where your Civ3 application lives. If anyone really needs me to develop a Mac utility to patch your save file à la Option C then please PM me.
I'll modify the GOTM23 installer shortly anyway to put extra copies of these files in the top level directory.
Xerol Sep 17, 2004, 08:00 AM I haven't started yet; are the ones on the start page fixed?
AlanH Sep 17, 2004, 09:35 AM Not the one I downloaded an hour or so ago to start playing. I've copied the four files.
LucK Sep 17, 2004, 12:53 PM all is good and smooth now =) thanks alot for the help. I copied the 4 files on mine and did the same on rommies PC, so all is working as it should. :goodjob: :p :goodjob:

Not the one I downloaded an hour or so ago to start playing. I've copied the four files. I uploaded new files about 12 hours ago by my reckoning - but looking in the directory, they are the old ones!
I'll upload them again now.
skinhenk Sep 18, 2004, 06:13 AM Hi everyone!
I have achieved a domination victory and the game crashes....
What is the problem??
Xerol Sep 18, 2004, 09:44 AM Chances are, 99.999% of the time when your game crashes at victory, it's either a problem with pediaicons.txt or a file with the wrong name or location.
and note i'm a strong advocate for including an 'updated' pediaicons.txt with each save

Put the pediaicons.txt file from this post (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=2120230&postcount=41) into your \civ3\text folder. :)
JohnnyMacP Sep 23, 2004, 09:55 AM I've just (un)successfully finished GOTM 35 - I have all the necessary patches mentioned in this thread, but I'm interested in trying some of the past games. 30 crashed as soon as I tried to start it. Anything I need to know for that, or other past games.
ainwood Sep 23, 2004, 03:13 PM What version are you trying to play it in (PTW, presumably)? Chances are, you need to install some add-on graphics packs for any game prior to about GOTM 33. Let me know the version, and I'll send you the links to the files.
JohnnyMacP Sep 23, 2004, 08:32 PM Actually, it's vanilla/Mac, GOTY ed. w/ 1.29 patch. Guess I forgot to mention the important stuff.
ainwood Sep 23, 2004, 08:35 PM Alright - if you have all the patches installed, then its probably (hopefully) pretty minor. Rather than clutter-up this thread, can you PM (http://forums.civfanatics.com/private.php?do=newpm&userid=2444) me with the error message you're getting? :)
AlanH Sep 24, 2004, 05:16 AM HI
I get the same result if I load GOTM 30 into my current GOTM 35 installation. I have to load it into an older installation that I use for old GOTMs, then it works OK. I *think* the only difference between these two versions was the resources files, which have to be the GOTM21 set, plus the pediaicons.txt file, which was probably the one distributed with GOTM29.
JohnnyMacP Sep 24, 2004, 08:41 PM Yep. Works just fine. I downloaded 29, added the pediacons and 21's resources and everything's just Ducky. I'm assuming I'll have to change this back for normal games?
AlanH Sep 24, 2004, 08:45 PM I keep an unmodified copy and a modified copy (actually several for different mod levels). That way you don't have to keep changing files around. Just rename the folders to identify each one.
ainwood Sep 24, 2004, 08:45 PM Yes, unfortunately you will. Going forward, its less of a problem because we now use a pediaicons.txt file that is backwards-compatable, and the standard resources.pcx file. :)
