How to add new units to CivIII by using Civ3Edit.....(it ain't hard, it just takes a few minutes. Hey....if I can do it, then so can you !!!). First, use Windows Explorer on your PC to go to Program_Files/Infogrames_Interactive/Civilization_III/Art/units and create a new folder with a name that is EXACTLY the same as the new unit you want to add. Now download and unzip or move ALL the files of this new unit into this new folder. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: In order to add new units you MUST download the 1.29f patch. This can be found at the offical Civ3 site (http//www.civ3.com). I suggest that you do this now, then continue as follows:- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT TO DO: 1) Double left click Civ3Edit (this can be found on your PC by clicking on "start", then "Programs", then "Infogrames_Interactive", then "Civilization_III", then "Civ3Edit". You can also find it by using Windows Explorer, or you may already have the Civ3Edit icon on your desktop) 2) In Civ3Edit you will see a blue ocean with some artic ice along the top. Above the ice you will see some controls: left click on "Scenario", then "Custom Rules" and "ok" the popup warning message. 3) Now left click on "Rules", then "Edit", then "Units". You will now see the edit Civ3 rules screen, with the settler unit highlighted. 4) IMPORTANT NOTE: if you cannot see any add or delete buttons then I suggest that you download the 1.29f patch. If you CAN see these buttons, click on "Add". A new popup has appeared called "Add Unit Type". Type the EXACT name and click "OK". 5) We have now created a new unit, but at the moment it looks like a settler. No problem, just click the icon box and get to number 3 to give the new unit the Explorer picture (we will change this later, but for the moment this will do). 6) It's time to fill in all the unit boxes to make the unit come alive (the following are EXAMPLES only):- Prerequisite = (this is the tech required before the new unit can be built) Class = (the default setting will be Land, so you may need to change it, depending on what you want the new unit to be) Upgrade to = (this tells the game what unit will make your new unit obsolete so that it can no longer be built) Shield cost = up to you (times this number by ten for the actual cost. A cost of zero means that the unit will be built next turn) Moves = up to you Attack Strength = up to you Defense Strength = up to you (remember, units with a defence of zero can be captured, like the Civ3 catapult unit) Transport Capacity = (if you want the new unit to carry other units, like the Caravel or Galleon does) Zone of Control = (I like to give this to most mounted units and all missile armed units, but it's up to you) HP Bonus = if you want the new unit to have more or less hit points than normal (up to + or - 20). Many people leave this at zero. Required Resources = (what resources are needed before the unit can be built) Unit Abilities = (NOTE: hold down the Ctrl key to make multiple selections) Available to = What civilizations can build this new unit (Again, use the Ctrl key) Civilopedia Entry = type PRTO_ (example: PRTO_Mongol_Horseman....see below for more Civilopeadia stuff) Special Actions = tick Load, Airlift, Pilage and Upgrade Unit AI Strategies = (this tells the AI how to use this new unit) And thats it, you've finished. There is no 'ok' button because all these changes are automaticlly saved when you close Civ3Edit. All you need to do now is click "close" then click "file" and "save" and save as civ3mod. You have done it! Everything else below can be ignored if you like. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: in step 5 above we gave this new unit the look of the Explorer unit. This is how it would look in the city build window. If you want the new unit to appear in the city build window, then do the following:- Some unit creators include a file called units_32. If they have, then just copy this into Program Files/Infrogrames Interactive/Civilization III/Art/units and overwrite the existsing one. (NOTE: make a copy first of your existing units_32 file, in case you wish to reload it) If the creator has NOT supplied a new units_32 file, or if you wish to have one with just about ALL the new units on it (which I recommend), then go to the Units Graphics Forum in the Civfanatics Centre and look for a thread by kittenOFchaos called "My Units_32 file with 51 unit icons added to it". Inside this thread you will find that three very nice people called kittenOFchaos, MOON and Zulu9812 have kept an updated units_32 file with lots of new units already in it. Just download this into Program Files/Infrogrames Interactive/Civilization III/Art/units instead. Now repeat steps 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 above, but this time keep clicking the icon box untill you get the picture you want. (Any problems, then just ask at the CivFantics Creation Forum and someone will help.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE CIVILOPEDIA ENTRIES Although it is NOT necessary in order to make the unit work in the game, here is how to set up the Civilopeadia entries :- IF the creator has made some Civilopeadia pictures then do the following:- (NOTE: NONE of this is neccessary in order to make the unit work.....it just makes an entry in the Civilopeadia. If the creator has not supplied any of these files, or if it all looks a bit complicated, then just ignor this section). 1) copy or move the two files called XXXXlarge.pcx & XXXXsmall.pcx files into CivilizationIII/Art/Civilopeadia/Icons/units. 2) open the CivilizationIII/Text/PediaIcons file and scroll down to the #ICON_PRTO_Privateer section (it's about half way down) and type (or copy & paste) the following ABOVE the #End Units line - #ICON_PRTO_XXXX (i.e. type the new unit name here) art\civilopedia\icons\units\XXXXlarge.pcx art\civilopedia\icons\units\XXXXsmall.pcx 3) next, doubleclick the Civilopeadia_text file that the creator has supplied (if any) to open it and "copy" all the contents (we will "paste" it in a moment). 4) now go to CivilizationIII/Text and doubleclick "civilopeadia" to open it. 5) Last of all, scroll down to what you think is the correct section (you will know) and "paste" all the text that you copied in item 3) above. That's it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CREDITS: We should thank the following people: without them new units would not have been possible:- Lab Monkey for the up-to-date new units library (in the CivFanatics Units forum) kittenOFchaos, MOON and Zulu9812 for their up-to-date units_32 file. Jimmyh for the hacked Civ3Editor and Gramphos for the Civ3CopyTool, which were so useful in the early days. Dark Sheer and Plutarck, for their excellent animation tutorials.
