The first doctorate (Elizabeth) showed more interest than I thought, so now it’s time for Victoria. She is very similar to the former, but enough differences to mix things up completely.

I have decided it is best after all to go with the cookbook style. I am just not sure if we should hold voting after the first 25 turns, or shall we aim for the first 50 turns? Good question. I’ve leave that up to you guys.

Also, I think for this time around, we’ll still keep game-breaking events off, but also turn off huts. I noticed in past cook-book games, it seems the person who played the best doesn’t always get chosen, because a lot of it comes down to who was the luckiest in hut-popping. This is not an HoF game, but a more true down-to-earth game of deity. I admit it’s nice to get Bronzeworking and Monarchy etc for free, but I think that goes against the spirit of playing on this level.

I’ll throw up a starting save when we come to some sort of agreement.

Terrorfied: Getting on a plane vs. Going to the mall

I don't travel by air too often, but did so recently. Whenever I have to deal with all this silly security theatre it I can't help but think of all the other threats we do not guard against.

I'll put my real question upfront and then work backwards:

Why is it so much more important to keep air travel so "protected" from terrorists but not malls, sporting events, <insert any reasonably "public" place where 100s or 1000s gather in very close quarters>?

Since 9/11 there are countless stories of passengers taking action for very minor perceived threats. So, the idea that terrorists will turn a plane into a flying bomb ala 9/11 just isn't a realistic likelihood.

Ever been to a mall? What about a pro football or baseball game? Yeah, they have super lame security at those games, but let's pretend they're effective... Have you ever seen the lines of people streaming into a ticket gate? Even with an airport, what's to stop someone BEFORE the security gate during a busy holiday flying season?

These other public places are, in fact, much more accessible, have greater #s of people, and have equal (or greater) potential to create irrational fear and cause harm to the economy.

What do you think will be the public and government response will be the first time a suicide bomber(s) kill 200 people and take out a wing of the Mall of America?

A couple notes:
*I'm not saying remove all security from flying, just return it to pre 9/11. Because of all the stress and anxiety associated with flying I do think there's good reason to keep a lot of items out of that environment.
*Decorum: This is meant to be a general discussion about security, public behavior, and (in)appropriate policies. Attempts to turn it into a Troofer, OMG OBAMA IS SATAN, or other similarly OT, crazy discussions... I will ask mods to delete/remove such posts.

COLUMBIA, SC -- When an ambulance brought Tillmon Webb home from the hospital after he hurt his knee in March, paramedics warned the then 550-pound man he probably wouldn't be able to get up from his recliner if they put him there, his wife said.

Webb told them to leave him there anyway. He would sit in that recliner, slowly dying, for the next eight months. Finally, paramedics were called back to his Greenwood home on Wednesday because he was in a lot of pain.

Webb's body was physically stuck to the power recliner and firefighters had to cut him from the chair to take him to the hospital. He died a few hours later, his body covered with sores and a "very bad odor," according to a police report.

Webb, 33, didn't ask for help for all those months, because he was ashamed and didn't have health insurance, said his wife, Ada. He slept and used the bathroom in his chair and she cleaned it every day. The former preacher would post sermons online from the chair, and it wasn't long before he decided he was ready to go home to the Lord, she said.

"After he sat there in that one spot for a week, he was embarrassed. It was like he already knew what was going to happen," Ada Webb said.

Webb's mother was the one who placed the final call to paramedics. Not only did crews have to cut apart the chair, but they had to cut a hole in the wall of the couple's mobile home about 70 miles west of Columbia to get him out. A police report said he weighed about 800 pounds, but his wife said he was closer to 500 pounds.

The hospital told Tillmon Webb's wife he died from a heart attack, she said. The coroner's office isn't investigating the death and referred all questions to Greenwood County deputies, who sent their report, but didn't respond to a phone message.

Webb died on the couple's second anniversary. They met four years ago on MySpace, and Ada Webb said she didn't see a man who weighed more than 500 pounds, but instead saw a guy who loved the Lord and had a big heart.

"I had the worst anniversary yesterday I ever had, but I know he had the best one he ever had because he's with Jesus now," she said.

Tillmon Webb drove school buses for nearly 15 years, until his weight made it impossible. His health kept getting worse, and Ada Webb said she begged hospital officials to keep him after doctors treated his knee injury in March. But the couple had no way to pay and were sent home.

For his first few weeks home, Tillmon Webb was open to the idea of seeing someone. Getting to them was the problem.

"Everybody kept telling us, if you get here, we'll help you. We didn't have no way of getting him up, and nobody was willing to come help us," Ada Webb said. "He just kind of said, 'it's in God's hands' at that point."

Tillmon Webb spent the rest of his days playing with his four dogs and talking about religion to other people on the Internet.

"I did all I could for him. He loved me with a passion," his wife said. "The only reason he held on to life here was for his family because he wanted to go home and be with the Lord."

Corporations- First off remove the government control over the expansion of corporations and have them approach the government with various requests from bailouts to proposals to buy X units from company. Next step would be to expand the number and type of corporations so you can have companies like Ford or McDonald Douglas.

Now with these expanded corporations you can have them build military units with certain promotions to signify requirements of the military.

Internal Government Agencies: With this I don't have a fully thought out idea but needless to say we need to have internal agencies such as CIA or FBI which function somewhat to their own accord with of course your direction. You would issue them general orders, for CIA type agencies would be to preform espionage missions. However on the FBI side you would order them to preform law enforcement and counter-intel function.

Please add to this, to me atleast is seems like a good idea.

Pc Bill Barker, the traffic officer swept to his death in the Cumbrian floods, had been due to celebrate his 45th birthday with his young family this weekend, it has emerged.

Described as “a policeman through and through”, he died saving the lives of motorists by directing them away from the crumbling Northside Bridge in Workington when it suddenly gave way beneath him at 4.40am on Friday.

His widow Hazel, 44, led the tributes to Pc Barker, saying: "How do you put into words how you feel about somebody you are so proud of? Bill was my best friend, my forever friend and an amazing dad.

"Even when he was exhausted from work he would always take time out for the kids. I have the comfort of knowing Bill died doing the job he loved and the fact he was helping others is typical of Bill."

Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, described Pc Barker as a "very heroic, very brave man", adding: "I think we owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for the service he has shown."
Pc Barker, of Egremont, had served with Cumbria Police for 25 years and leaves four children, Simon, 16, Melissa, 15, Daniel, 13, and Emma, six.

His body was found on a beach in Allonby several hours after he disappeared from the road bridge.

Craig Mackey, Cumbria’s chief constable, said: “Bill was a wonderful police officer and a real family man. He was due to celebrate his 45th birthday tomorrow.

“He was directing motorists safely off Northside Bridge, saving lives, when the tragic incident occurred.

“Bill was a wonderful police officer and a real family man. He is a hero who died saving the lives of others and our thoughts are with his family at this devastating time.
“He was a much loved friend, colleague and an inspiration to everyone he knew - he will be sadly missed.

“His friends say he loved being a police officer and, a passionate biker, he was part of the constabulary's dedicated roads policing unit. He was a sterling officer and had won a number of awards throughout his 25 year service.”

Nicola Patterson, 24, one of his neighbours, said: “Bill was a nice fellow. He was a policeman through and through, one hundred per cent. He gave everything for his job and what he was doing on the bridge was very brave."

Sir Hugh Orde, president of the Association of Chief Police Officers, said: "Being part of the police service means walking towards danger and, in the best traditions of the service, that is what Bill Barker bravely did.

"All within the police family will be greatly saddened to hear of his death."

Sad. I had a brief stint with the force up there, and met this guy a few times. Everyone had great respect for him; and he was a truly exemplary officer. He was killed in the line of duty, saving people's lives - exactly a policeman's work. He will be missed

New Moon' eclipsing two box-office records
The latest vampire installment rakes in $26.3 million in midnight ticket sales and is set to make more than $70 million in single-day sales. But sales are expected to drop off over the weekend.
New Moon

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" was on course to break two box-office records in one day.

The second installment of the vampire saga broke the record for midnight ticket sales Thursday night and was expected to record the biggest single-day sales ever at the box office Friday evening.

Gross receipts from midnight shows in the U.S. and Canada totaled $26.3 million, distributor Summit Entertainment reported Friday morning.

On Friday evening, four people at competing studios who were following box-office returns said the movie was all but certain to gross more than $70 million by the end of the day. The previous record for single-day domestic ticket sales was $67.2 million, set by "The Dark Knight" in 2008.

Though the debut day for "New Moon" was unprecedented, the full opening weekend will probably be merely massive. Ticket sales for the first "Twilight" film, which opened on the same weekend last year, plunged 41% on the Saturday after it opened. "New Moon" will probably see an even bigger drop, given the massive amount of interest that helped it set a record as the biggest pre-seller on online ticketing services Fandango and MovieTickets.com.

Nonetheless, a total weekend gross of more than $110 million is all but certain and more than $120 million is very possible. That would give "New Moon" the biggest domestic weekend gross for any film this year, the biggest for an opening outside the summer movie season, and one of the top five of all time, not accounting for inflation.

Ticket sales from the 25 other countries where "New Moon" is opening this weekend will almost certainly push the worldwide weekend gross to more than $150 million.

Summit spent only $50 million to make "New Moon," including tax incentives from Canada, where it was produced. Even including marketing costs, the picture is certain to be profitable based on ticket sales alone, even before Summit starts making money from DVD and other post-theatrical markets.

Studios usually keep about half the revenue a movie collects from theatrical ticket sales.

Summit is expected to report an official total for Friday ticket sales this morning and an estimate for the three-day weekend Sunday.

Ticket sales for other movies opening this weekend were looking strong late Friday as well.

"The Blind Side," starring Sandra Bullock, will compete with "2012," which debuted last week, to be the No. 2 movie this weekend. Based on early ticket sales, it will probably gross more than $20 million through Sunday.

HOW TO: PLAY ALL NATION - NITRAM15'S TUTORIAL

It's a little modding tutorial for people who want to play with SPQR, Armenia, Scythia, Macedonia, etc.

1.STEP
Before starting I recommend to have a copy about the following files.

You have to find .../Rome - Total War (or your folder's name)/data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/descr_strat.txt and open it

Create the security copy of it.

Open the the file. You see something like this:

Code:

campaign imperial_campaign
playable
        romans_julii
        romans_brutii
        romans_scipii
end
unlockable
        egypt
        seleucid
        carthage
        parthia
        gauls
        germans
        britons
        greek_cities
end
nonplayable
        romans_senate
        macedon
        pontus
        armenia
        dacia
        numidia
        scythia
        spain
        thrace
        slave
end

Now change it to this:

Code:

campaign imperial_campaign
playable
        romans_julii
        romans_brutii
        romans_scipii
        romans_senate
        macedon
        pontus
        armenia
        dacia
        numidia
        scythia
        spain
        thrace
        slave
        egypt
        seleucid
        carthage
        parthia
        gauls
        germans
        britons
        greek_cities
end
unlockable
end
nonplayable
end

2.STEP

Now find and copy the .../Rome - Total War (or your installation directory)/data/text/campaign_descriptions.txt

Then open it, and copy this into there:

Code:

{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_ROMANS_SENATE_TITLE}SENATVS POPVLVSQVE ROMANUS
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_ROMANS_SENATE_DESCR}The Senate and People Of Rome

{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_ARMENIA_TITLE}Armenians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_ARMENIA_DESCR}Armenians

{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_DACIA_TITLE}Dacians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_DACIA_DESCR}Dacians

{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_NUMIDIA_TITLE}Numidians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_NUMIDIA_DESCR}Numidians

{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SCYTHIA_TITLE}Scythians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SCYTHIA_DESCR}Scythians

{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SPAIN_TITLE}Iberians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SPAIN_DESCR}Iberians

{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_THRACE_TITLE}Thracians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_THRACE_DESCR}Thracians

{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SLAVE_TITLE}Rebels
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SLAVE_DESCR}Rebels

And then start Rome Total War, then Single Player -> Imperial Campaign -> and select one of the unlocked factions.

Good luck!
Enjoy playing!
:)

Will you go see the Wolfman (2010)? It will be in cinemas starting this February.
I will probably see it. Unfortunately it doesnt seem at all scary, and pretty much the entire plot can be constructed by the trailer it seems. However it has actors i can stand to watch, and the computer gfx seem to do their job, without being anything impressive.
Besides i like stories about wolves. Werewolves not so much, or even not at all, since they are one of the most tiresome themes in horror movies.
What i like the most about this movie is that it is set in 1880's London. I have a very bleak imagination of that place at that era, and the scenes from the movie seem to portrey something similar :)

And you, will you see it or not, and what do you think of its trailer?

Game runs with BUFFY otherwise. Yes I am running 3.19. Yes I run it with admin permissions on Vista. I get no error messages from BUFFY (i.e., I don't get the "game is incompatible for HOF submission" message).
