Don't want to discuss this in the thread, but the Mitrailleuse never amounted to that much. Check out the Wikipedia article. The number produced was really small. As far as tactics, the Americans discovered during the Civil War that attacking troops dug into strong defensive positions was not a good strategy (Grant at Cold Harbor - he never made that mistake again). The Europeans hadn't figured this out by WWI.
