After you give the app access, all you have to do is go into the applications section of your privacy settings. You can uncheck the post-to-wall option then.

In Conquests destroyers can see subs, so you don't even need them for that function anymore. I only really use them for the novelty of it nowadays. I can't think of a single situation that I've had recently where I thought "Gee, I really need a submarine right now."

Plus, longbowmen and medieval infantry needed an upgrade path. Somewhat expensive, but if you have the money and need upgraded troops quickly it can be useful.
