    V1.15 BETA Release

Ok, one more rant and I'm done, I mean it. I am a programmer and I know all about the emergent properties that pop up in a complex program. I know what a nightmare debugging can be, and that no program is released without defects. Still, the issues that have had to be patched in all of...

    V1.15 BETA Release

No, no software is without some defects. Neither is there a such thing as a perfect meal. But if a restaurant serves me a raw steak when I ask for medium well and the salad is rotten, I am going to complain. The expectation is that if I did not receive what I ordered, the problem will be...

    V1.15 BETA Release

I second Salamandre. The last time I was invited to beta test a product, I was given a free copy for my time. Beta testing can be a fun experience, but it is not worth paying for the privilege. Firaxis' letting the community in on its development process is a good decision, but I'd much...

Random Civs aren't so random. A bug?

I play with a random player civ and random opponents, and whenever I have CLSP on the American civs appear, every time. When CLSP is off I get a good mix of original and new civs. With CLSP, I usually draw a Civ from the Mediterranean group, though my neighbors turn out to be American Civs.

    City Spacing

Because of my play style I like to have only a bit of overlap among my cities. My empires tend to be all core, so each of my cities needs to have growing room. I try to space so that each city has its own run of high shield tiles and shares high food tiles with neighboring cities if there is...

    V1.15 BETA Release

Are the bugs that were introduced in 1.13 fixed in this version? The changelog doesn't mention a bunch of stuff wrong with 1.13, but are those fixes omitted because 1.13 was never official?

Restarting if in a bad starting postion?

I usually shop around for starts unless I'm committed to playing a game for the sake of the challenge. Otherwise, I'm not going to waste time on a game if my empire is bound to be dismal. Sometimes I will pass up a good start if it's boring. I like terrain with a lot of character as well as...

The The Great Wall of Najran has been destroyed!

I managed to destroy the Great Wall by bombarding the Arab town of Najran with trebuchets. This oddity was in a Monarch game with patch 1.13b. All Arab towns lost their walls right after the bombard message appeared. Apparently defenders don't have to be redlined to damage improvements...

    Maya Flood Plain Start

I wouldn't call that a good start, actually. That area will be very productive in the middle and industrial ages, but your capital will almost certainly be sent back to 1 pop point by disease early on. I would reccomend moving your settler diagonally to the Southeast. It looks like there will...

    U.n.f.a.i.r.!!!!!!!

This sequence has made my fingers twitch toward the reset button many a time: -my elite knight attacks vet spearman in town -knight wins three rounds, redlining spearman -spearman wins five rounds, killing knight -my veteran knight attacks fresh vet spearman -knight wins three rounds...

    An Absolute Good Time

Odd, they are JPEGs of small areas of the game screen. Anyways, I'm putting this game on hold because I've been hit with the flu. Playing Civ is hard with a scrambled brain, so playing Civ and writing about it is right out. :)

    PLEASE PLEASE Fix Culture Flipping

Crazy Jerome, I like that idea. But instead of virtual artillery, why not enable the resistors to just attack the garrison based on their number and cultural strength. The simplest implementation would be to let the city attack its garrison at a strength equal to the number of resistors times...

    An Absolute Good Time

Amazingly, I draw Greece! I get two traits I was hoping for, plus a leader befitting a totalitarian state. The start is not looking bad either: However, there is a dilemma. The brilliant and always physically fit Alexander faces an off-coast start position. If the starting...

    An Absolute Good Time

Howdy, fanatics. I've decided to make a spectacle of myself this new year and post my first play-by-play here for your delight and/or disdain. Here are the basic specs: -C3C 1.12b -Monarch difficulty -Standard size random world -8 civilizations -Random land mass -Default climate/age...

Geniuses and criminals do their best work on their 30's to impress women

So, it's in society's best interest to stigmatize geeks in order to keep them productive? That has all sorts of nasty implications. On the other hand, now I know I'm doing my part for posterity. :P

    You Have the Power!

Stop messing with my mind, man! Stay out of my head! ;) Cynic checking in. There are hard limits on what a person can achieve without the cooperation of others and society as a whole. Even though society is a collection of individuals and not a conglomerated system (take that, Al Gore)...

Important survival lessons from the movies

-If you're a policeman, MP, security guard, or disposable bad guy and you see or hear something out of the ordinary, call every colleague you can and wait in a safe place until they arrive. Investigating strange sights or noises alone is a definate not-do. -Automatic weapons were designed to...

    Drank Pepsi - got fired

Nothing like a good witch hunt to get the blood running in the morning. A company is entitled to fire an employee for anything that reflects poorly on them, and there is probably a clear clause to that effect in this man's contract. Corporations are legal entities, not moral ones...

Fear of being labeled a hypocrite.

I'm more concerned about whether my arguments make sense in my own head than whether they will be received favorably. Most of my posts die in the reply box because I decide to give the subject further thought rather than respond off the cuff. By the time I return the topic has either died out...

    Anime Music Thread

Two tunes that stay in my head with annoying persistence are the openings from Hellsing and Now and Then, Here and There. Cowboy Bebop has a lot of great music, but I don't find it as catchy as the above themes. I've heard Noir described as a series best viewed blindfolded, and I can't...
