    Making the jump to Emperor

I do combat II for defensive purposes. If you go city raider and get counterattacked, your axeman, swordsman, whatever, is a sitting duck. If you go cover, you only get a bonus against archers, and if the AI has some metal units or chariots on defense then that promotion is useless. Combat...

    Darius!

I keep hearing about these Incans on here, I guess I had better give them a try. A unique unit you can build at the begining of the game sounds awesome. I am enjoying playing Babylon, they have a tough unique unit that comes early for defense and have that aggresive trait helps out all their...

    Making the jump to Emperor

Thanks to the advice on here, I actually got rolling again. The game I started most recently had copper in my capital's bfc, and I had researched bronze working fairly early. So like the advice on here, I just slapped down a barracks in my capital and started spitting out axemen one after the...

    Darius!

I love playing Darius too. I have more games in my hall of fame with Persia on them than any other civ, and some of my Persia games were the highest score. Yes a War Chariot is better than an immortal, but still having a chariot that can take out archers is a huge boost. I like Darius' traits...

    Making the jump to Emperor

Ok, I hear the advice here. Don't try and found a whole bunch of cities and expect an axe rush to work, if you do that, it needs to be super early, coming out of only 1 or 2 cities with lots of chopping and whipping. I think on my game tonight, I am going to try and found as many cities as I...

    Making the jump to Emperor

I am a long time player of Civ IV and played this game better many years ago, I took a long break from it before I picked it up again, and now it's driving me crazy that I can't beat the Emperor difficulty level like I used to do. I am stuck on Monarch, which is getting easier and easier to win...

I'm learning about running at 0% science

Yeah I hear that, if you capture a lot of resource poor cities surrounded by uncleared jungle (and don't / can't clear it out) , desert, or tundra and hold on to those, even a courthouse won't solve your problems. That pillage money is addicting, but once your army runs out of nearby cities...

I'm learning about running at 0% science

I also hear the two posts about binary research. I should try that in some of my future games where I don't get TOO overexpanded. I was loosing gold at 0% science there for a while, so building up my gold for a big science push was not an option.

I'm learning about running at 0% science

Yeah, like I say on my game it was really about the same either way you did it, but I will try and remember to run build wealth if I have currency for future games.

I'm learning about running at 0% science

I WAS loosing gold at 0%, that's what made me post about this. I figured it has happened to some other serious warmongers or REXers out there. You're right about having more cities, it seems like land is power. At first these little size 1 and 2 cities really strain your economy, but once you...

I'm learning about running at 0% science

I played some last night and finally got code of laws with just 6 turns having most of my cities building wealth and running at 50% science. I immediately went up with courthouses in almost all my cities, and that seemed to fix my economy up pretty good. I have the Forbidden Palace going up in...

I'm learning about running at 0% science

I tried switching over to build wealth in most of my cities (since I did have currency) and running up my science slider, but I was still getting about the same amount of gold per turn and research per turn doing it either way. I think those library multipliers must apply to build research too...

I'm learning about running at 0% science

Back when I used to come on the forums a few years back, all the advice I seemed to get was don't let your science slider run below 60%. Since I have come back on here recently I have noticed that people are saying that's not a good rule. Am I to believe that you can run your science all the...

Silly Habits YOU've Made in Civilization 4.

This was a good thread to read. I can relate to people that like to turn out all the lights while playing. My wife nags me and tells me I hurt my eyes by doing that, so I've tried to honor her request lately and leave the overhead light on while I play. Since I have restarted playing (I...

Great game but struggling! Help appreciated

I enjoy playing on Monarch, that seems to be the level where you get a pretty good challenge out of the AI.

First pangea game in years..unsure what to do next!

Isabell is usually a bad general.

First pangea game in years..unsure what to do next!

I'm more of a warmonger myself, but I would still think you need to hold back and not go for distant stuff until you have currency and code of laws. The rule I've heard on here a lot is if you can't run your science slider up to 60% without going in the hole finacially, you have too many...

Which National Wonders Do You Build in Your Capital?

It looks like people are in pretty good agreement that Wall Street and Ironworks come so late in the game that they are not useful in a capital. Here lately, I find it hard to even have 6 banks built in my empire unless I've captured a lot of shrines, and then if I did, I would want Wall Street...

How do you keep AIs from Vassaling everyone?

Maybe this is why I need to play on Emporer again, I capture one city and these Monarch AIs are ready to throw in the towel.

How do you keep AIs from Vassaling everyone?

Yeah I hear that about the peace vassals. On my game against Monty, he beat the Spanish up early through his own war and had them as a pretty powerful vassal most of the game. Could Isabell have been doing the research for him or something? I am really suspicious of Monty getting high tech...
