    Need for Large City Games

Assuming perfect conditions with rivers everywhere then you can have at least 8 CS farms for +16F, 4 maritimes and +4 from granary + mill, doesn't sound impossible at all. Any additional gold could be used to rushbuy hospitals in the smallest cities. Granted perfection conditions may not be...

    Need for Large City Games

Right after alpaca made the thread about ICS I made an IGS (infinite growth strategy) game with 4 cities plus it turns out 6 puppets. The strategy was just to expand once the capital could quickly produce a settler and send him to a lux, repeating until nearby luxes taken (was 4 cities then)...

    ICS, Civ V style

    15/4 = 3.75 times as much food .. a city that big better have the 75% food reduction If that citizen is a specialist in a 250% science city, that makes him worth 1 * 1.5 (for lib) + 3 = 4.5 base science, 4.5 * 3.5 = 15.75 science. With a +2 science per specialist, that would be 6.5 * 3.5 =...

    Granaries worth building?

So you compromise..you kill stuff, make them gold puppets, grow everything hugely with maritime, getting max gold and science as fast as possible, then with this superior tech rate, and while specializing a super science and super production city somewhere, when you hit hospitals you raze some...

    Granaries worth building?

    It's not hard.. let's compare 2 size 5s to 1 size 10: 2 size 5s, both have libs, and one of them has nat college, both running 2 specialists: 5*1.5 + 2*3 = 7.5 + 6 = 13.5 base science per city nat college city gets 13.5 * 1.5 = 20.25 science total = 13.5 + 20.25 = 33.75 science 1 size...

    Swordsmen and Catapults: who cares?

Along with horses being superior combat units, there's the issue of the way the tech works...the first tech you can research reveals them, whereas iron takes much longer and is so is harder to settle and set up, if you even can at that point. It's also closer to the top of the tree..AH gives...

    The yields are fine (screenshots)

As others have mentioned, that is true only if you have a lot of cities (and no happiness...which the overhead of per-city unhappiness makes even worse). Based on your posts including the "ignore happiness" thread, your playstyle is to own every hex on the map. The problem is not just that...

    The yields are fine (screenshots)

Isn't that the whole point of the new CSs? If you have 4 militaristic CSs nearby, that's a lot of extra units. Kill someone. If you have 4 martime, that's a lot of food. Combined with a beeline to hospital and you will have the fastest tech known man (notice that hospital is on the top...

Mods have already greatly improved the game

It needs more depth like chess needs more depth. You civ4fans playing chess on release date: screaming for patches to slow down white because 1. e4 2. bc4 3. qh5 is totally overpowered. Well, it is against the AI. The AI has never seen such a rush, and instead just gets extra queens later...

    New strategy: Ignore happiness

Why can't it just have the same effect as starvation. No food is same as no happiness in game. Explanation = citizen suicided from depression. Girlfriend left him and he got fired, then this whole war with Rome thing *pull trigger*. One less unhappy face. Soon, your empire will stabilize...

    Harbors Might Require Circumnavigation

Except that it IS the case. I made this thread because I couldn't figure out why I wasn't receiving trade income in all my coastal cities (my capital had a harbor too). I didn't get the bonus until the exact moment I left the edge of the map. EDIT: You save on maintenance (and worker...

Why you should go for Hammers early and often

I don't believe you are giving granaries enough credit. They provide 1G -> 2F conversion, effectively giving a mine or a specialist -- say, 3H or 3S. So how is a 1G -> 2F -> 3H conversion too expensive? Yes alliances are better, but that doesn't make granaries not worth it after you get...

Why you should go for Hammers early and often

You left out the granary! It's the best building there is! It effectively converts into a free mine of some kind (3H, possibly with 5G) or 3S for 1G. The water mill is second best with a 2G cost. If we are going with the logic that growth is everything (certainly a 36 size city can do more...

    Harbors Might Require Circumnavigation

I'm not saying I think they should make it so what I said is true... What I said IS true. The "might" is in the title because if you already have a direct route unblocked by ice tiles to the other city, you won't need to circle around in the other direction.

    Harbors Might Require Circumnavigation

It's all in the title...if you don't prove the oblate spheroidness of the earth, your abstract trade ships may be blocked by ice tiles. It's not enough to build a harbor, there has to be an actual sailable route! This seems to get me on pangea maps especially. Often times, there IS a...

    TSG1 After Action Report

199 turn @ 1390, finally finishing with ~5 rifles and a ballista Most of the game was me wandering around aimlessly because I couldn't be bothered to do anything beyond auto-explore one scout early on that died very quickly, so I had the UUs one mountain per turnifying around the map in every...

How do I stop losing money!?

You're both right..rails are rather expensive in my experience as my income tends to be marginal from massed combat unless I'm in a golden age..but the 50% boost to a specialized production city is huge. I just wouldn't build them between every city. A city making mainly gold doesn't care if...

Only Noobs generate their own food surplus, good players have City States do it!

Surely a plain is worse than a grassland: 3 farmed plains = 2F/1H * 3 The food cancels with the worker for each tile, so you ultimately get 3H. 2 farmed grass = 3F * 2 = 2 surplus F That 2 surplus F can feed a mined hill for 3H. They are thus basically equivalent, except that the...

    Drug References

What about slaying millions of simulated people in the name of greed and world domination? Warning: Game is a game because it allows you to do things you wouldn't do in real life. I will retract my smart-ass comment when they invent a real-life-simulator that runs in real time...of...

Resource tile yields are way too low

That's not really true..by the time they build the new superior defensive unit, you are present with your attacking force. They of course have to be expecting the attack the moment you start building one so they can research the new one and build it themselves, otherwise they will be too late...
