    Joining a settler is also occasionally useful (in SP) to increase the size of a Mongol captured barbarian village (size 1) that has no access to food resources. (Especially if you have a city which has good food & production resources to pump out settlers.)

    You are correct that starting from an island can be an interesting challenge. From my perspective you spent a lot of time in the beginning game building warriors. Two warriors (5 turns) is usually enough for early exploration. Then you should change your focus to expansion and/or teching.

    I think the problem was the number of units in play. I was the Germans and was cranking out units, and so were my opponents. I've played a couple of games since and haven't had any issues.

    Just because you can win by Domination, doesn't mean you have to. Try for the victory you're not leading in. Play the "weaker" Civs, or at least something other than your favorite. The AI may be fixed in it's patterns, that doesn't mean you have to be. Make it more challenging for yourself...
