Soren Johnson's Jake Solomon interview is a funny, illuminating insider look at Firaxis

This is really about the whole Civ series. https://www.idlethumbs.net/designernotes/episodes/jake-solomon-part-1 Because both the interviewer and interviewee shared an important work experience at early 2000s Firaxis, you get some real cool inside stories in this Part 1. Some moments that...

Civilization: Reign of Power, official mobile game from Nexon, has come and gone

Making this the second Korea-made Civ spinoff, after Civilization Online. https://mmoculture.com/2023/04/civilization-reign-of-power-nexon-shutting-down-mobile-strategy-title-5-months-after-official-launch/

RockPaperShotgun: These are your 50 favourite strategy games of all time (with Civ1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and Alpha Centauri)

Yeah, I was going to mention original Colonization, which is available on GOG & Steam, but only the DOS version IIRC - the original CD-ROM carries both DOS & Windows 3.1 versions, which have entirely separate art assets. And Civ1 has 3 major iterations from MicroProse: DOS, Mac / Windows 3.0...

RockPaperShotgun: These are your 50 favourite strategy games of all time (with Civ1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and Alpha Centauri)

Except for all the legal conundrums of using decades-old fan mods with no clear licensing, whose authors may have disappeared off the net :) If we are on things not too likely to happen: One of Civ2's biggest if less talked-about features is the beautiful Civilopedia made in Macromedia...

[LP] My hopes for improvements to the main game between now and March 2023

Your general point of managers budgetting for visible flare that wins them KPI & promotion, instead of substantial but unseen work with real benefits, definitely has a kernel of truth. But the idea for a zombie mode in particular may have originated from Sid Meier. Like several...

    Le Monde profiles Sid Meier

    Wonder art in civgame instagram

I don't remember CivWorld (the Facebook game) too clearly, but it didn't have large splash wonder art. Its most important new artworks were the isometric throne room customizations, which are very poor in quality, not indicative of a big art budget. Otherwise, most artworks were reused from...

Next Civ game most likely will be a fantasy game

The other thing is fantasy modes are not the only thing tested out in the NFP phase. Some of the new modes may also pave the way to future main entry mechanics, especially the new barbarians.

    Civilization Iceberg

Haven't touched it in a while, you need to either unpack Civ4's FPK files (PakBuild) and browse the files with an image viewer that support DDS texture files, or use a tool that can read from the pack. I used Dragon Unpacker.

Next Civ game most likely will be a fantasy game

See this report on Sid's canceled CivRev2 (not the released game of the same name). Firaxis had been trying to use fantastic themes to expand the palette of Civ gameplay for years. The NFP modes finally gave them a canvas to bring these experiments to shippable form. Whether they can make a...

    Civilization Iceberg

A little Brian Reynolds trivia: - Brian's belief in empowering the player is why he made Civ2 to have a cheat menu, highly editable data, and scenario support. He built the WW2 Europe scenario to showcase it. - The game industry can be a small place. You see the composer of Rise of Nations...

    Civilization Iceberg

Ah, an iceberg meme. Civ is such a big family there's endless trivia to mine. Here are some. - Board games: we have iterations of the Francis Tresham original, three separate licensed adaptations (apparently the middle one, based on CivRev, is the best?), and the Soren Johnson-designed card...

[NFP] Civilization VI: Possible New Civilizations Thread

Reading this thread, I must say this is quite the telephone game we are witnessing here. From a 250 CE insurgent about which we naturally have limited primary sources, to a 1900 CE booklet on local sights that attributed to her a few words like 扫清海宇 "to sweep clean the realm within the seas"...

[NFP] Civilization VI: Possible New Civilizations Thread

    1. Rather than 極, which makes no sense as a verb here, the character should be 拯 "rescue". The next word should be 塹壕 - "moat, trench". Together, the phrase is 拯斯民於塹壕: "to save our people from the deep trench." 2. The second word you don't recognize seems like 邪 to me, equivalent to 耶 (yé in...

I've seen posts mentioning that they hadn't seen aurora in Civ6 since GS. Is this an actual issue, or the result of pure chance?

Poll: is the "leaked" list of leaders real?

To play detective a bit, there is an important point of suspicion. Setting aside the likelihood of someone violating NDAs so openly on Reddit, the poster claimed: Neither Civ6 itself, nor its official Youtube videos have been localized into Hungarian. Unless 2K are in the process of localizing...

Sid Meier on original CivRev2 plan: Amazons, zombies, Atlantis & aliens

The podcast Designer's Notes, hosted by Civ4's Soren Johnson, has recently released The final part of its Sid Meier interview. In this episode, he talked about his more recent games, including CivRev, the unsuccessful Facebook game CivWorld, and the original plan for CivRev2. As you may recall...

Sid Meier in the "Designer's Notes" podcast series

"Designer's Notes" is a podcast hosted by Civ4's Soren Johnson. A few days ago the podcast has wrapped up a four-part interview with Sid Meier, with lots of insider talk about Sid's design process. You may also enjoy the episode with Bruce Shelley, which largely focused on his tenure as Sid's...
